This is the first draft of the plot

I've been mulling over some ideas that have popped into my head for the past couple of weeks. It's a pretty scattered plot like a jigsaw puzzle with missing and misplaced pieces if you will.

Demiri is a shy blacksmith trainee whose father has been missing for over 10 years.

Klydin is a tough fisher's boy (courageous/ stubborn) who has hardened up for the past couple years after the death of his grandfather.

Lulyi has yet to have a occupancy... She will be in the prologue though. Maybe she won't even be a trainee of any kind. She comes from a rich family in the Desert Nation. Her personality of non-tolerance makes her an unfavorable companion among the large family that live in the estate. And she has a sibling that everyone likes. She quotes, "They say that the ties of brotherhood are what roots us to our land and makes us prosper. But what happens when those bonds are cut loose? I shall leave the land for the ways of old have left me as dry as the desert and my soul is thirsty for water."

Lulyi will think this as she is traveling through the desert in the prologue. She eats a meal of dried jackalope meat and cactus fruit from her pack and then picks out the stubborn pieces with a knife. A glimmer of silver catches on the shiny blade. Lulyi examines the reflection of the sky, as the blade is flat and acting as a mirror, and to her terror there is a mountain skatros circling above.

She proceeds to laying flat against the side of the dune to appear camouflaged while the giant bird continues to fly above. But it saw her already. The scene ends here. (btw, she survives but she has a scar across her face)

We come to a cave in the bay where a blue dragon with blue, yellow, and orange quills is fervently working on a crystal (thanks Raj) pot. She hears the flapping of wings as a customer comes in. This dragon asks her if she can make him his order. The first dragon says that her crate of crystal won't be coming in anytime soon due to the cave-in in the southern mines. She goes on to explain that she could get an order from the eastern mines but it would take time. The customer is content and goes his way. Them someone else comes in soon after. It's the Supreme himself. The Supreme is like an elder above all others who has a voice in politics. Most dragons will listen to him first before any of the other government heads. He is scaled red with aged gray quills and light brown eyes. The crystalsmith (or Demiri if you haven't figured it out) is flabbergasted that the Supreme himself would come to her home. He asks if she can make him some harpoons for the sentries that keep and eye out for sea monsters that will grab a dragon out of the air as they fish out in the open ocean. She says that the blueprints for the harpoons were destroyed years ago when they burned in a fire in the Eastern District. Anyone who knew how to make them have died from old age.

The Supreme says that he knows and explains that once in a Supreme's lifetime that they will commission a mass production of harpoons. He then tells Demiri that there are no harpoons in storage. Demiri is shocked and then begins to question the Supreme as to why he has told her this. "Why me?" she says. He says that she is the best crystalsmith in the Southern District and needs her help in creating new blueprints. The Supreme goes on to say that Demiri shouldn't doubt herself, and that she is capable.

There is a commotion outside as Klydin is in a worse mood than usual so when a pale blue dragon with equally pale green eyes gets on his bad side, a fight breaks out as the pale dragon is in a bitter mood as well. The Supreme notices this and begins to move his conversation with Demiri towards that subject. He asks who that is. She tells the Supreme that the deeper blue one with red tipped quills is Klydin and the paler dragon is a slightly older fisher that tends to be bitter around everyone. The two must have got on the wrong foot and ticked each other off. Demiri sighs with frustration. The Supreme attempts to figure out what is wrong. The younger dragon begins to work again on her pot while muttering angerly. The Supreme realizes that Demiri isn't going to tell him. Demiri changes the subject again and says "How exactly am I supposed to make these harpoons?"

The Supreme replies that the solution of this problem lies in the beginning. He departs from the cave and Demiri's mother enters through her quarters. Demiri is completely confused as to "the beginning" and discusses this with her mother, Yonash. She doesn't know what the Supreme is talking about either.

They exit the cave in a blind attempt to stop Klydin from hurting the grumpy dragon. It has been getting harder and harder to control him since his grandfather died a few months ago. Yonash apologizes to the pale dragon while Demiri tries to calm Klydin. He is stubborn but eventually gives way and flies off in a bitter way.

I'm not sure if the stuff highlighted in blue should be a flashback or the actual beginning of the story, as in after the prologue.

The rest of the story is very sketchy. Later on Demiri somehow realizes that the "beginning" is actually at the mines, where the crystal for the harpoons is first taken out of the earth. A very important foreshadow is shown here. She sees a skatros far off in the distance. Three of them. Getting closer (They don't normally venture near the coast). I'm thinking that right after she spots them a storm comes in from the coast and drives Demiri from the mines (which are slightly inland in the mountains). Or, Lulyi could come out of nowhere and pull Demiri down as the skatros begin the close in, hurtling Demiri over the threshold and into the unknown (I'm thinking that Klydin will be with her as well, so that the story starts off without any hinderence and not giving the reader all the information about the bay dragons as a lure for the reader to continue).

They flee north in order to evade the massive birds of prey. In this wild chase, they lose their direction. I'm 90% sure there should be a storm or something more creative to drive them further away and completly jumble their senses. Either way, they find themselves in the northern temerate forests. In their wanderings, they meet a skreek clan. Lulyi introduces the similar sized intelligent birds to the coast dragons. The clan doesn't know how or where the coast village is, but they do know another place, the Desert Nation.

A specific skreek, Pebble, escorts them. This is a dangerous task, as the nation lies north as well as the mountain chain. As they progress, it gets colder. Soon they are forced to cross the mountains south so that the dragons don't freeze to death (there are numerous caves that remain warm during night due to the volcanic activity). This will be in more detail of course but I'm out of ideas for now. I will also upload the map of their world, called Rantis.

Anyway, Pebble, an adolecent, tells them of his beleifs. The skreeks are a religious race unlike the dragons and believe in a creator (a.k.a. God) This is a mild attribution to the action and puts a type of moral to the story that I wish to weave in. It also creates internal conflict.

Besides the perilous journey and growing tensions between the disagreeable Lulyi and Klydin, they finally come to the western most city of the Desert Nation (haven't come up with a name yet). Now the story progresses as Lulyi becomes exceedingly uncomfortable since this is her hometown and she is well known. Klydin and Demiri are really happy because they believe that they can find someone who could show them the way back to their village. Lulyi remains in the shadows as Klydin and Demiri quickly realize that something isn't friendly about some of the beige dragons. As the uneasiness of the situation increases, Klydin becomes grumpy again. This of course will result in a fight with any punks in the city that decide to pick a fight with the blue dragon. The tensions rise and one day Demiri is brought into the chaos. A band of older dragons who aren't comfortable with the foreign dragons and dislike Klydin disrupting the peace have warned him to not make a scene. Unfortunately, with the big fight mentioned earlier, they no longer tolerate him. They drive off Klydin but allow Demiri to stay and in this process discover Lulyi and return her to her home. Klydin orders Demiri to stay since she will be safer until they can find a way home.

During this time, Pebble has been traveling home and a small, but horrid sliver of more foreshadowing is shown. He is traveling through a mountain pass back to the colder side of the range when a skatros catches him by surprise. I must mention though... The last words Pebble hears come from the skatros. "Kill skreek. All skreeks die." (I need serious help if this is going to scare the poop out of people)

Both the skreeks and dragons thought that skatros were unintelligent beasts. But none of them could guess that they had their own language based off high-pithed sounds that only bats could hear (The bat thing might come in handy since Demiri has a pet bat). I'm having a hard time coming up with an advantage for the skatros. They're bigger but that's about it.

Going back to the city, Demiri is moving in with Lulyi while some of her relatives are checking old maps and history manuscripts for hints of where the village is. Demiri witnesses Lulyi go through hell as her sibling is the center of attention as always and Lulyi is scolded severely. This is the point of the story where Lulyi begins to slowly change and do things more independently. Her short temper however is something that will stick with Lulyi, although being around calm dragons like Demiri help balance her out.

Klydin is going over the mountains again looking for help from the skreeks as a band of skatros comes at him. He manages to escape into a small cavern that extends into the side of the mountain where he meets a red dragon who has also been chased into the cave by the monstrous birds. The red dragon is Remefido (sounds Italian, no? :3 Okay maybe not. *shrugs*). I'm not sure if Remefido will reveal his identity as Demiri's father or will keep it a secret. He is a scientist.

I've seen multiple books where a person is mildly insane and helps the main character (or one of them anyway) and reveal him/herself as the person they were looking for all along at a later date. I've seen this in specific stories like Starlighter (loved that book) and somewhat in the movie Legand of the Guardians where Soren discovers that Elzeryb (don't know how to spell) is his childhood hero, Lyze of Keil (once again spelling fail). This kind of plot twist is usually humorous to the reader and awkward for the character. I'm leaning toward that for Remefido. The thought of doing this makes me laugh inside. :3

Somehow Demiri through subtle questions and events in the estate, she realizes that the skreeks and dragons haven't had connections for some time, as each prefers it's own side of the mountain range and the growing population of skatros is causing a war between skreeks and skatros. The skatros have been a challenge for the skreeks for as long as anyone can remember. There are no skreeks in the Desert Nation (I'm getting really tired of calling it that. I'll refer to it now on as DN). Long story short, Demiri realizes that the skreeks and dragons are cut off from each other by a barricade of blood-thirsty savages and their own problems.

Just a side note, the skatros are now being ruled by a dictator who has made the effort to learn both the skreek and dragon language. Also, they are fooling the dragons by attacking them at the same rate while they are increasing in number so they do not arouse suspicion. There are no hints of this besides the death of Pebble. Only the dictator knows these other languages.

Okay, now I'm not sure how to go from here. Here are a list of things that I plan to have happen.

-each of the main characters: Demiri, Klydin, and Lulyi, will develop and represent a vital part of unity. This unity is the theme of the story and is portrayed in the skreeks and dragons eventually teaming up to vanquish the skatros.
Demiri: courage and confidence
Klydin: letting go of the past
Lulyi: teamwork/trust in friends
-Somehow, disaster must fall on the DN in order for them to come to the reality that the skatros are an immediate threat
-When Remefido finally reunites with his daughter, both of them must learn to accept each other as they are. Remefido must cope with the fact that his little youngling is now virtually old enough to start a family of her own while Demiri must aknowledge her father's changes in philosiphy and his somewhat lost of sanity. (he's not retarded, he's just impossible to understand sometimes. He talks in riddles. This reminds me of some guy in Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. What was his name? Ox?)
-All living main characters make it back to the village

Here is a list of things that I am unsure about

-Should all of the main characters live? (Lulyi, Klydin, Demiri, Remefido)
-How in the heck do I get Remefido and Demiri together?? And everyone else too... (they don't have to. They could be kept apart)
-How to bring the skreeks and dragons together
-If the coast village will be involved
-Remefido's backstory of his dissaprearence
-The complexity of skatros society (if any)
