I decided I needed a rather precise, detailed, organized method to actually finish Prince of Yen, but I'm still not sure what that is. I reinstalled Storybook, but I don't like it. I'm wondering if I might be better off using google docs, or some such thing...

But I am working on it! Which is good.

I'm glad Peter's Angel is snapping together, Aubrey. That's a good snippet. :)

Added two scenes last night and pushed it up to 31,871! :D

Quote:
The officer let go of Edwin and followed the gentleman. The servants began to herd the slaves into a line and lead them out of the plaza. Matthew refused to turn around, his eyes latched on Edwin’s face.

For a minute, Edwin stared dumbly back. Matthew mouthed something, something too complicated to make out. A servant shoved him, and Matthew stumbled into line. Even as he started walking away, he looked over his shoulder and said something else, this time aloud. “I love you.”

Edwin screamed. There were words, but he couldn’t remember what they were. He ran. Matthew disappeared in the crowd. Edwin shouted again and pushed himself faster – then tripped. He crashed into someone.

The officer gripped Edwin’s shoulders and kept him from falling face-first in the dirt. Before Edwin could regain his balance, he felt cold steel press against his neck. He froze.

“Behave,” the officer hissed in his ear, “or we’ll count you with the casualties.” Edwin tried to stop breathing, but his chest heaved, making the knife brush the underside of his chin.

The officer glared in his eye for a moment, then lowered the knife. He hauled Edwin back to his place on the wall and dropped him. Edwin collapsed in a dusty heap. No one made him stand back up.

Edwin scanned the dwindling crowd in the plaza, but it was too late. Matthew, Luke, and their new master were gone. He was alone.

That was fascinating, Philie! :D I've never ventured inside this thread before, then I do and I find an awesome except from your book! :D just out of curiosity, what genre is Peter's Angel? :)

Aw, thanks, Mae! :D *has a love-hate relationship with scenes like that* :P

Peter's Angel is fantasy. However, it's Runitanian (I'm not spelling that right), meaning it's set in a fictional country on this earth. So it has a very historical feel - nothing fantastical like dragons, magic, etc. It's just not strictly historical. Peter's Angel is colonial-esque with medieval hierarchy government.

Ahhh, I see! :D I thought it had an historical feel. :D Maybe I should post my goals here. It might help me finish then. :)

My current goal: Be ready for NaNo in time. So finish outlining, and writing up list of characters and places to be developed, and develop them as necessary.

I've tried to tell her that before. ;) She should read the Prisoner of Zenda to get it in her head. ;)

I'm getting ready for NaNo while still doing some Firmament work.

Jonathan, are you still thinking of working on your new novel during November? :D

Well this isn't a novel goal, but this is the only accountability thread around so it'll do. :D

I'm going to finish my POY short story by November one. Working title of "How Peliodares Came to Yen" it features a very naughty ten year old Prince Janin. I'm about three pages in and I'd like to have it out of my way when Nanowrimo hits.

About how many pages do you expect the short story to be?

You'd have to ask the short story that. At this point I really have no clue. About a dozen or so, I'd imagine, but you never know with me and short stories.

I'm still planning on doing at least 5k a week on Peter's Angel through NaNo. I forgot how much I did last week (though I'm pretty sure it was over 5k), so I just rounded up my count from last week to the nearest 1,000 and plotted out the milestones I have to pass during November. I have the numbers written on my calendar, along with my NaNo minimums, so I don't forget. :D

Finished a long scene last night... If anyone was in chat yesterday evening, this was the same scene I was attempting to write then and arguing with my imagination over. I think in the context of the book it will work well... Plus it establishes some traditions that will be important later.

As such, I've figured out how to fix and assimilate some other half-written scenes that occur later on... So I will probably work on that today.

Must not neglect NaNo, must not neglect NaNo...

Total word count is currently 35,583. :D (On Peter's Angel, not the NaNo!)

Quote:
Edwin forced himself to think about something besides the pain. His thoughts turned into a prayer, a plea for Galen and a request for strength – and perhaps an extra-hearty breakfast.

Footsteps broke his conversation. He looked up, hoping for the supervisor, but it wasn’t – it was Nick.

He stood in the doorway, arms crossed. “You’re a fool.”

Edwin clenched his fists, unsure of how to reply to that.

“There’s one way to live in this place. Survive. Focus on your lot and you’ll make it out alive.”

“And how would you know? You haven’t been here any longer than I have,” Edwin returned.

“I know,” was all Nick offered for an explanation. “That’s the way with places like this. If you have any respect for Galen you’d leave him to mind his own business. Keep interfering, and you’re both going to end up in the grave.” Nick turned and left.

Edwin growled, flexing his fists. Angry retaliations filled his mind, but he tried to pray instead.

I've been working on PA all afternoon... which means I'll be meeting my NaNo goal tonight, probably at the expense of ignoring emails. *grumbles*

I wrote two more scenes. They're closely related to the scene I wrote last night, only they happen to Nathan about 30-50k words later. After I wrote them I was able to get a clear idea of the other scenes that would be needed to finish out part 2, so I wrote summaries in the draft so I could snap the full scenes in later.

I'm over 38k now, which was my minimum threshold for the week. However, I will likely go past that...

Well, I did not get those three scenes written. :P However, I did a lot of work with my first book, So I am very happy with my overall progress. The goal for November, however, is to finish those final three scenes for the second book and get the third draft done. Then it will be ready for beta reading.

Wow, Phili. It's amazing how much you can write while still having a life. (and having what comes out of all the writing be awesome ;))

Well, I did not get those three scenes written. :P However, I did a lot of work with my first book, So I am very happy with my overall progress. The goal for November, however, is to finish those final three scenes for the second book and get the third draft done. Then it will be ready for beta reading.

*actually reads all that was in that paragraph but zeroes in on the last sentence*
 :o ...!!!

Thanks to the wonders of brainstorming in HW chat, I figured out a scene to insert in part 1 that solves a realism problem I had. This scene establishes that a) Mark knows Nathan/Kennard was alive and is on the lookout for him, b) Saul answers directly to Mark, and c) Mark kept Nathan's recent whereabouts secret from the rest of the court. Plus I start toying with Mark's spiritual/mental state here... which has always been gray and unstable water, which is part of what makes him a good character, I hope. :P

Quote:
Mark stared at the house from across the street, marveling. It was such an insignificant house – a simple two-story, with plain features and a modest display in the shop window. It seemed so unnatural that the humble dwelling contained secrets that could upset an entire country’s existence. They were secrets that people could be killed for knowing, if they didn’t die trying to keep it hidden.
Yet the street was oblivious. The house blended seamlessly with all the other structures in the row, quiet and dark except for one light on in an upper window. For all apparent purposes, the couple that lived inside was nothing more than an old seamstress and her husband, making a modest living while raising a young boy.
Mark had expected something like that. Perhaps that’s why it annoyed him so – he had suspected that Kennard was staying quiet, living a peasant’s life under the care of George and Maria. Mark wasn’t a mite surprised to have his assumptions confirmed.
He was perturbed to find that the family’s hideout was only a few hours from the capitol. Edric’s men had searched the entire countries of Reval and Alaidia, but the family had evaded detection for ten years. They hadn’t even left the region or changed their names.
George and Maria had hid themselves well. And for the moment, Mark was content to keep it that way.
“They claim he got lost in the battle, and they haven’t seen him since.” Saul reigned his horse in closer to Mark’s and lowered his voice. “I have my men keeping an eye on the area in case he returns. I am also checking all the casualties.”
Mark nodded, though he doubted it would be that easy. He had ceased to believe in ambivalent fate, but he hadn’t quite acclimated himself to the idea of a concerned God. Regardless, he doubted either of them would be that kind.
“I can question them further,” Saul offered.
“No. I don’t want you or your men to be seen around the house, in case he’s still in the area. I also don’t want the neighbors to worry.” Mark nudged his horse and trotted a ways down the alley, out of sight of the house. Saul followed, nodding.
Mark glanced around the alley. “How many of your men know about this?”
“Just him,” Saul gestured at the guard mounted beside them, “and two others.”
Mark looked at the guard, then turned his gaze back to Saul. “Keep it that way.”
Saul bowed his head slowly, then turned to go. His horse trotted to the end of the lane before Mark called out to him. “Oh, and Saul…”
The commander paused and glanced over his shoulder. Mark stared him in the eye. “Remember, you report to me, not Edric.”
Saul held his gaze for a moment, then a slight smile lifted his lips. “Yes, your highness.”

Nearing 40k now. Bare minimum, I need to clear 43k this week... Hoping to go past that. ;)

Thankee, Jonathan. :D I'll see what I can do. ;)

This afternoon I've been working on plotting out the scenes for a big chunk of part 3. It's a bit sticky, because everything goes wrong at once... and I have to figure out what order it goes wrong in. I'm trying to decide if I can cut a battle and still have enough of the blame fall on the MC... But, once I get it figured out, I have a lot of material that I can snap into this section. I put one scene in already, which put me to nearly 41k. :D
