In my world, magic is huge is a big factor. Here is a thread explaining the magic, and any thought and suggestions are welcome!
The Magic:
Magic is gifted to the people by Azéan. The magic he gifts can be used for good or evil depending on what the gifted person decides to do. Since Azéan give his people freedom of choice, they can decide how it is used.
Magic is a invisible force, stemming on emotions. Certain emotions is what control the magic. Anger or hatred as well as concentration can bring on the magic. Like for the dark magicians, by focusing on anger and hated, they can use the magic for evil. While a good magician would pour all his energy into concentration, and become more powerful then the dark magician.
Sometimes a very good magician who chose to turn his magic dark can have special abilities when it comes to emotions. They can have a manipulating effect on emotions, disturbing people’s thought patterns and confusing them if a gifted one does not keep their guard against these controlling emotions up. A few select dark magicians can even cast a curse, although that can use so much of their energy it can even kill. A guarded mind can do nothing if there is a curse.
Certain well trained and specially gifted magicians have ties with nature that can be used to their advantage. Such as being able to manipulate elements, such as fire, lighting, water, earth, etc. But only if they are already existing. Like if a fire is already there, they can take the fire and combine it with the magic to use for their advantage. Same with lightening. If it is during a lightening storm, they can take the lightening from the sky and use it, with precise concentration. A good or bad magician can use the elements when focused. Focusing and concentration become easier over time.
Another aspect in magic is energy. Using magic takes energy, especially if one is not yet skilled with it. But once is person is used to using it and using it properly, they will tire slower, and less energy will be used. Usually young magicians are also trained to use a type of sword in order to conserve energy.
