I'm surprised this topic hasn't come up yet! I recently watched the play for the first time, and I love the music! I love the storyline, too, and will never see the Wizard of Oz the same. The only thing I didn't like about it was the witchcraft, so it will be something that I will not watch often. Also, there are implications of "stuff" in it, and for some people a couple might get a little too close to feel comfortable. That said, I personally loved this play, but would recommend it with caution.

What do y'all think about it? Please post quotes, lyric quotes, and favorite parts below, or discussion points! Just nothing inappropriate. ;)

What is it? A play, a movie, or a book?

It's mostly known for being a broadway musical, but it's also a book. I haven't seen or read it, though.

I absolutely love the music. I haven't got to see it yet, unfortunately. I guessed there was implications of "stuff" but I don't think it's that bad. (Definitely not as bad as Into the Woods!) Elphaba rivals Christine (from Phantom of the Opera) as the character I want most to sing on stage. My favorite song is No Good Deed.

I've actually referenced this musical once in the torture thread. I hated Fiaro until the scene where he gets captured and tortured. I pointed out that the instant you threaten a character with torture you have to admire him, regardless of how annoying he is, or if you agree with him or not. He's just so... noble!

Other favorite songs are For Good, I'm Not That Girl, and that duet that I can never remember the name of. As Long As You're Mine or something. :?

So this is not something I can go watch, I assume? I must find a talented musical group who is performing it? :(

*nod nod* You must find a musical group performing it. But it will be worth it! I will say that, for those who have read the book, the way they deal with the "stuff" is very well done.

Vanya, some other really good songs are Defying Gravity, Popular, Wonderful, and What is this Feeling? I LOVE those songs. Also, the "stuff" is pretty much implied, but two couples do get a little too close and may feel a little uncomfortable to those watching once or twice.

If anyone is wondering about the witchcraft, this does have some spells in it that Elphaba chant. That is the main reason I will not see this too often, but once in a while. ;)

Actually, Airi, you can find pretty big chunks of it on YouTube if you want a sample.

I adore the musical (though advise caution/use your own discernment on some bits of it), and utterly loathe and despise the book. There are few books that I've been unable to read from cover to cover, but this book is vile. I felt dirty after some scenes about half-way in. Blech.

I didn't mention it before, but I love the music, too. "Defying Gravity", "For Good", and "I'm Not That Girl" are my favorites, but they're all good. :D

Airi, if you want to listen to some of the music, they have recordings on the website: http://www.wickedthemusical.com/page.php?#MusicPlayer.

My sister was taking lessons from a professional musical-person and one of the assignments was to memorize a song from a musical to really work on. "Wicked" was one of them and the song "Popular" made my Dad and I laugh so hard. It was something my sister would do naturally. She never did understand why we were laughing, even after we explained the word 'arrogance' to her.

That's the only contact I've had with Wicked.

You can definitely get the soundtrack on youtube. I haven't seen much actual video.

I initially didn't like Defying Gravity. I heard it several times before I knew what it was from and didn't really figure out why everyone thought it was so great... 'tis much better in context. I like it well enough now. :D

The spells don't bother me much. She chants them in "No Good Deed" which is my favorite, so you can draw conclusions from that.

I think a lot of the songs are better when you know the context. :D

Hmm, I have never heard of this. I'll have to look it up sometime. :)

Here's my artist's rendition of the stage of Wicked! :D It's Glinda and Elphaba. It may give you an idea of what it might look like.
