My friend asked me this question once. I first responded with what my goal is now, and it was relatively normal. But then he's like, "Well, yeah. But what did you want to do?"
So, says I, "Well, I always wanted to be a mermaid."
As it turns out, he always wanted to go to Mars and meet some aliens.

So what do/did you guys want to be when you grow/grew up that was not the average, generic profession, or even a profession at all?

I've always wanted to be either a knight of Hyrule or a wandering adventurer in Hyrule.

Want to be? Planet-shaker.

Wanted to be? I don't know, maybe a LEGO designer or something. :P Though I still wouldn't mind that, if LEGO made all their stuff in Europe/America instead of having some of it in Mexico/China, etc.

In fact, I know I'd have a blast. The little blocks still have a special place in my heart...
EDIT: Being an epic hero like in my book ideas and such would be nice, too...
God bless,
Crushmaster.

Oi. That's a loaded question. I've wanted to be a lot of things and there are still many that I'd like to reach for if I weren't restricted by having to provide for the necessities of life :P

Let's see. I've (realistically) wanted to be a...
Chaplain/Marine
Chef
Fisherman/Sailor
Composer/Musician
Missionary
Writer
Basketball Coach
Architect/Designer
Director

I've (slightly/extravagantly unrealistically) wanted to be a...
Knight
Pirate
Superhero

Currently, I'm pursuing health and writing though. Nutrition and Dietetics for the paycheck, Creative Writing for the investment. I'd still love to keep composing in my spare time, though, and it'd be amazing if I could eventually spend my life working overseas as a Missionary.

Shrinking back, yet reaching out, within sight is the sky, within reach is the world. Leave the broken cloths of the past behind and go pursue something worth pursuing. A new reason worth living for. A new dream.

You are ready.

 This reminds me of a certain little girl I heard about (from her mom) who can't decide whether she wants to be a missionary or a movie star.

I, always the sensible one, have never had any unrealistic ideas about what I would be when I grew up. Boring, isn't it? In fact, I've only wanted to be two things: first, I wanted to be an artist, because that was apparently where my talent lay. I began art lessons when I was 5, and I "knew" from then on that I would be an artist. Then, when I was 9 or so, I realized that not only could I write something without crying, I could enjoy it. Note: Just because one enjoys something does not mean one is good at it.

You see, I'm just too sensible and down to Earth. I must take my crazy ideas to the clouds, and keep them there. I always have, as far back as I can remember. There was a sort of understanding in even my most tender and young mind: I'm going to be an artist, so I can't be an Indian, but that's only true in this world.

In those imaginary worlds I have been everything from an acrobat to the President, very unaware that I was doomed to become a writer.

Hehe, I always wanted to be an adventurer of some kind. Now that I've seen Doctor Who, I want to be a companion/assistant, and travel space and time, and fight aliens, and do an awful lot of running. XD

But I'm planning on going to college for film production. (Which means I could potentially work on DW in the far-away future if I got a film job in Britain. xD) And yes, I'm older than most college students but I'm working first. :)

Why not a full-blown Time Lord, Mel? ;)

Because they have all kinds of angsty problems. XD You'll notice that the Doctor is the only one left?

Location: Elsewhere. I think.
I used to want to be an Indian, preferably Crow. A boy Indian though, because who wants to be a squaw? Besides that...
I wanted to work in a feedlot.
Live in the middle of now where and only just survive.
Be a spray pilot (actually that still sounds sort of interesting...)
And much more.
I remember once when I was supposed to tell what I wanted to be when I grew up so they could put it in the recital program or something, and all the other kids did things like: "swimmer and trainer, and movie star," and things like that, and I put: "Missionary or farmer's wife." :? Which, I still would really like to do - but it looked pretty stodgy next to theirs!

**cough** You know, the Doctor has lots of relationship problems. Everyone he likes DIES.

And he avoids falling in love with humans now. He had exactly one experience with it and realised that she would die before him... (and then there was the whole 'she got trapped in a parallel universe' thing on top of that...)

It's like elves. You really try not to mix human and elf blood. Doesn't work.

Besides. I'd rather not. XD I think he's cute in a 'awww, cute, look at the fez' kind of way, not a more grownup way. :)

@Phylis - Not stodgy, but funny. I wonder what the teachers thought, though. LOL.

I haven't ever wanted to be anything particularly interesting - just a mom, writer, and maybe a missionary.

But I do have pretty funny story about Griff. :D When he was little, he always wanted to be Batman. Not just any superhero... just Batman. My mom asked him why once, and he said, matter-of-factly, "Because Batman didn't have any superpowers. He was just really rich and athletic!"

I didn't have anything I wished to be when I was little. I just thought I'd grow up and be just like my Mum: married with lots of children. :D

I've always wanted to be a Pokemon Trainer. Meowth FTW!!

But if you want my honest answer... I want to work with animal behavior. Animal-psychiatrist is one way to put it. (Where's the darn spellchecker when you need it???)

meow

Dear Seabird,

I believe the word you're looking for is psychiatrist.

Sincerely,
Spellchecker

Oh, by the way...

There are three things I want to be. If I could be all three, that would be awesome, but I would settle for just one of them.

College English Professor
Bestselling Novelist
Movie Score Composer

I also want to write, compose, and produce my own songs, but I don't want to be a big country music star. I'll find a talented 'pretty-boy' singer if my band gets famous at all. :P He can be the face of it.

I've also wanted to design and build sports cars.

Getting paid ten cents for every post I leave on a writing forum would be nice as well, considering how much of my writing time I use up doing it. I could be a professional forum-member.

Come to think of it, I did often dream of being a princess. Also an awesome violinist, but those two things were merely dreams, not anything I actually wanted to be, if that makes sense. :)

What I currently want to be is a world famous manga-ka. That's so not happening. XD But I have a back-up plan - I also want to be a dragon rider. :D

Previous things in the past I've wanted to do include being a centaur (centaurs are awesome!), saving the world from evil (such as alien invasions, armies of orcs, or other such things), and being rescued from a dragon (or other similarly dangerous predicament) by a knight in shining armor.

Insane dreams aside, I'll probably end up like my mum - married with kids (hopefully 8) and not enough time to do anything serious art or writing-wise, but not caring a bit, rather, liking it a lot. :D

:P I'm pretty sure Cat knows this, but to make sure you do: I think having crushes on celebrities is some of the worse sort of dribble society has come up with. So, not serious at all. I don't think Ani was either. ;)

I was talking within the goofy context of you growing up to be a Time Lord.

Hah! I am pretty much the same on that.

Though we usually delineate between the celebrity and the character. I pity the celebrities that get people with crushes on them. The characters... not so much. XD (I have a heavy dislike for Orlando Bloom fangirls. ::shudder::)

(and of course Ani was joking. XD)

I heard that...

And did I ever say I was kidding?

I have always just wanted to be a homeschooling mom with a nice, godly husband and at least twenty kids who writes in her spare time, if she has any. :)

I used to say I wanted to be a Mother and have 5 kids, all boys. Erm, I have changed my mind now. :dieshappy: Definitely not all boys! And not five kids either, I don't think. Three or four sounds more reasonable! *Chuckles*

I've always wanted to have five, with a mixture of boys and girls. . . Hey, do boys even think about how many kids they'd like when they grow up? *directs question to any man on the thread*

Yeah. I want lots. Boys and girls. Because there are so many cool names to give them so I need a lot of kids to name. ^_^

JK. But I do want a lot. I love kids. I'm the oldest of nine and the youngest is two now and we're all like...we need another baby! Except this might be it for my parents. My mother's had some serious health problems....

I've always loved animals, especially dogs and horses. When I grow up I would love to be a dog trainer. I love training Tessa, our border collie, new fun tricks. :dieshappy:

I laughed out loud a few times while reading this thread...The rest of my family must think I'm crazy...

Hmm...
I think I had always wanted to be a fairy for the longest time (I think until I was eight) and then I wanted to be an artist....And of course a princess seemed like a good idea too.

Now I want to be a journalist, and that is what I'm aiming towards.
being a nurse, or a veterinarian, or a veterinarian's assistant would be pretty cool as well. And of course, I would love to be a published author. :D

God bless,

Ditto! Except more boys than girls.

Ditto again! The awesome violinist part sounded good, but not exactly the practice. :P
Anybody here ever wanted to be a Borrower (as in the Borrowers in Mary Norton's books)?

Luke -- I'm also oldest of nine, and we are also saying how we need another baby! :)

And I totally agree about the names. :D Even if I get twenty I won't have enough for all the names I want to use...

A nice mixture of boys and girls would be nice.

Crush, what's your idea of "good-sized"? And Jonathan, how many do you want? :)

I know how much fun it is being one of seven, I can't imagine how much fun you would have in a family of eleven. :D
