Here I go creating another world and not sure what to do with it... *ahem*

Whenever I crochet I have the habit of talking to my creature (because I usually make creatures) as if they're on an operating table and waiting to be set free. Today this got me thinking: What if these creatures did come to life upon completion? So I came up with the concept of a world where people could create based on basic arts used today.

Painting/Drawing
Crocheting/Seamstress arts
Music/Song
Sculpting
Dancing
Origami

I wanted seven but those were all I could think of... Any more ideas? I'd also like to hear what you think these creatures would act like based on the art that they were created by. For example, the sewn and stuffed creatures would probably be more cuddly and less vocal. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Sculpture, of course; also perhaps dance. I can't think of a seventh.

I like the idea of the creatures acting in relation to how they were made: Sewn creatures being cuddly, perhaps musical creatures being able to make music themselves, etc.

Well ... I'd think that the material (in the case of sculpture and the like) or the form or style would influence a creature's behavior, personality, etc., more than how it was made. A creature created by a sarcastic poem, the result of a postmodern/abstract-art metal sculpture, and a tinfoil origami creature might have more in common than the metal sculpture would have with a Baroque marble sculpture-creature.

@Jon: Yes, I was thinking the musical creatures would be very hard to see (either translucent or just shy) but you can always hear them whereas the sculptures would be strong and hard creatures more so.

@KingJon: I'm not fully sure what you mean... Although I do think a marble carving and a metal carving would behave differently.

("Sculpture" and "carving" are not precisely the same thing, though they often overlap.) A sarcastic poem, a typical postmodern metal "sculpture" (a pile of random shapes), and an origami made out of tinfoil would all have more or less sharp edges ... and I'd think that would come through, so a creature from each of them would be short-tempered and otherwise generally unpleasant.

Aah, that's where I get into the twisting of what is good. The arts can be perverted into (we'll call them the Crafts XD ) and create things that weren't what they were purposed for. Like the post modern piles of metal and the messed up dances and such.

But even if we discard the clear perversions, there can be a great deal of similarity between pieces in entirely different media but from similar periods, and I think that this would show even more strongly in some ways in the creatures formed by them than the (I'd think superficial) similarities between two creatures from similar media but utterly different styles. For example, there's a lot in common between Renaissance/Baroque music and ancient Greek architecture (which would go under sculpture in your system, I'd think---maybe a building would generate a guardian for itself?), both often being built upon such ideas as the Golden Ratio. (I'm thinking of a bit in A Scholar of Magics by Caroline Stevermer; her cosmology for that series uses a series of concentric spheres---like an armillary sphere, but all of them solid instead of rings---to represent the worlds, and a character gets an idea for how to fix a problem with the relationship between them from listening to---I think---Bach.)

Yeah, there would be differences based on era but right now I want to solve the basics. I want to categorize as much as I can, what creatures would belong to what art and what weaknesses each art could have. I have to develop where the world is at before I can figure on era.

Ah. Like I said, I would tend to think of any similarities or differences between creatures based on which art created them as generally superficial, while differences between styles (of which "era" is a sub-category) even within one art seem to me potentially much larger, which is why I emphasized that so much. But if you're determined, or have at least made up your mind, I'll leave you to it

How would one create something by dancing?

Using movements and gestures to describe its form and personality, perhaps? Dancing as a Generative Art, it seems to me, isn't much of a stretch beyond music or poetry ...

In the same way martial arts are based off forms of animal fighting (I may add them as a sub-category to dance) I can see dances being interpreted into creatures based on certain movements.

How about the digital arts, like computer design? And also decorating, like the inside of houses and stuff? Hope I helped!

Is the ability to make a creature with Art inherent in the art or is it an ability that comes from within a person?

Does all Art made in those seven forms create creatures or do the creatures have to be made intentionally? Basically, would merely portraying a creature in one of the seven arts be enough to bring it to life?

How close to the original medium does the creature become? If you draw a horse, does the drawing hop off the paper and turn into a real horse or is it only alive on the paper or does something else happen? This doubly applies to the arts you've included that have no physical media involved. If you sing tiger, does a real tiger just appear?

I could load you with a lot more, but I promised to record another chapter of PA today, so I need to scoot. But we will definitely continue this later.

I think it would be a technique that would have to be learned in the same way that most artistic things have to be learned to some extent, but all art is done this way, so everyone just sees it as normal. Of course, those more inclined to creativity would be more likely to create, so it's really rather similar to our art.

I haven't decided if drawings stay on the page, or take their own form yet. But yes, a creature sung or danced would sort of materialize around the sounds or actions.

I know this is late but Photography could be another one....

They keep their History in pictures which come alive when activated by the authorized person..or their memories from the past are kept in Pictures...just thinking out loud..

I don't know if I would put photography in there... On the one hand, it is visual capturing of art, but on the other, it's all very real and doesn't have the same creation aspect as the rest of the arts.
