I could come up with a short scene from Dieki's forest photo....in a couple of days though. Since I'm way too occupied with my book.

This drabble was inspired by both Dieki’s forest picture and Philadelphia’s Bible verse story challenge, for the verse 2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV):

Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

“The Dark Forest”

After an hour, Mateo stopped searching for the path. He was lost in the dark forest.

He held back tears. The monastery would send a monk to find their favorite foolish boy.

Suddenly floating dots of light appeared and danced around him.

Fireflies?

Fairies?

Warm and happy feelings made him drowsy.

He lay down on the ground, surrendering.

“Never sleep in the forest,” the monks had warned. “Evil dwells there.”

He yawned and blinked.

Could the lights be evil?

“Jesus,” he whispered sleepily.

The lights floated backwards.

He stood up.

“Jesus.”

The lights fled.

Looking down, he saw the path.

I know the pictures I'm writing for and the stories I'm writing but I've gone and misplaced my flashdrive. :P

That was great Jonathan - sort of how the deception was so strong the boy connected it to the wrong thing which made the deception flee. Me likes :D

That was deep, Jonathan... I'm still trying to process it. But the phrase "favorite foolish boy" made me smile. :D

Thank you. "Favorite foolish boy" seemed to say a lot about both Mateo and the monks. :D

Nice, Jonathan, though not what I had in mind for the image. :)

That's the fun of the challenge - to see how people interpret things.

"Favorite foolish boy" is one of those short descriptions that says a mouthful of essence in a few words. Always a good thing. :D

That was really neat, Riniel! It was so intense somehow. The style really surprised me.

Thanks, I had it in my head for a long time, took me long enough to get it on paper though...

I love that picture. I'd love to write a story inspired by that. May I? :D

(And I'd be okay with you posting it on your blog, too - it /is/ your picture.)

Off topic: The graphics person in me has to ask. How/with what did you make that?

Sure, anybody who wants to can write about it. :) It'll be interesting to see what you all come up with.

I used these stock photos:
  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/njj4/5039497145/
  • http://liam-stock.deviantart.com/art/Black-Magic-18-129082746

On the land photo I did the following:
  • Removed the tall grass, the fence, and the road w\clone tool.
  • Removed some of the rocks to make them be in a more perfect circle.
  • Removed people.
  • Removed trees.
  • Made the mountain significantly taller and steeper.
  • Removed signs of civilization from the background.
  • Raised the foreground hill further above the background, for an illusion of height.
  • Flipped the left side of the close background and put it on the right, for more epicness.

To the sorceress I did the following:
  • Altered arm angle.
  • Recolored dress to red.

To the clouds I did the following:
  • Emphasized dark and light streaks in clouds.
  • Added green color
  • Add light over center

In compositing the elements I did the following:
  • Shaded and highlighted the rocks in the foreground.
  • Powerfully vignetted the hill and the upper corners of the clouds.
  • Color-corrected all elements, to make them both darker and to color them cyan.
Sounds awesome... Too bad I can't see the original pics... **on flickr and deviant art**

I did it! From the top pic in Seer's post: the boy and the faces. Posted in the Fireside.
