Does anyone use this service? Scratch that, I know some of you do. (Jaaaaay!) What is it, exactly? What do you use it for? Do you use it for promoting your brand or for personal? Do you think it's redundant to use Tumblr in addition to Twitter, blogging, and Facebook?

A good question. I don't know anything about Tumblr myself, except that it has some great pictures. To any of the Moderators, feel free to remove this post after someone with understanding of this strange device has answered; I'm really just posting to second Philadelphia's query.

I am also curious. Is it mainly used for pictures? Are blogs better for personal things about your story (or whatever your blog is used for) rather than a Tumblr?

I see tumblr as being a kind of blog. But without the long, thought-out posts. It's between twitter and blogging. Twitter is short. Blogs are long. Tumblr is in-between.

Vili said it well. While you can use Tumblr like a regular blog if you want, the interface makes it ideal for blogging pictures and "short stuff." A lot of people use Tumblr like Jenni does - a combination of original material and reblogs. I don't reblog on either of my Tumblr blogs, because I'm using them as advanced photostreams.

Tumblr is a GREAT interface for blogging photos. It's incredibly simple, and you can send your post directly to Twitter, etc. I have a blog for my art (www.elfinpen.tumblr.com) and a blog for my paper-crafts (www.roadtogrinnell.tumblr.com). The Tumblr blog is PERFECT for paper-crafts. It allows the focus to be on the card with just a short caption of details.

I love how easy and quick it is to blog on Tumblr. It's not powerful enough for my main writing blog, but as a simple sharing interface for art and pictures, it's awesome.

Google reader, Eru. I got tired of trying to be on every single blogging platform so that I could follow my friend's blogs.

Specifically, Tumblr is called "micro-blogging." You can do more bloggy things with it (pictures, etc.) that you can't do on twitter, plus you can make longer posts (I don't know if there's a character/word limit or not), but it's not for a full-out blogger. Have you ever seen a wordpress blog where every single post was bite-sized? No? Well, that would be because regular blog platforms aren't made for small posts and it would look odd. Micro-bloggers go to Tumblr. I'm not sure if they have a corner on micro-blogging (I doubt it) but they're the only micro-blogging platform I've seen.

That sounds like fun, Calen! If I got a tumblr I could use it for photography, but the only thing is that I don't have a copyright. Maybe I could use it for photo edits, though. *ponders some more*
