Salutations,

In ancient Wales and Scotland, there were lords set up on the borders who were given special powers to enable them to defend those borders. These were known as the Marcher Lords, and their story is one that is fraught with war, adventure, hardship, and other fascinating stuff like that. They were a notch above their fellow lords, and could do many things that the others could not. They also had a greater responsibility, as they could not wile away their time in the courts playing and having fun. They were warriors, and they lived a frontier lifestyle.

I am a very busy person, and I will be a busier person as soon as possible. I have great goals, and great plans to accomplish those goals. These demand a great portion of my time, and I will soon have little to no time to spend maintaining this forum. This saddens me, but I know my priorities.

I have no intention or desire to liquidate or abandon you, however. I want to keep this site going if at all possible. However, I will need your help to do it.

I need Marcher Lords.

I have set up a usergroup which has admin permissions: the Marcher Lords. Entry into this group is a high privilege that demands great responsibility. The fate of the board rests in the hands of those who choose to accept the mission.

I want people who are willing and able to spend time monitoring the site, keeping it going. I will be posting in a special section for the Marcher Lords to learn what it means to do this, and what your responsibilities will entail. Mainly you will be leading by example: taking the time to help the site go.

Think of it as a challenge.

Think of it as an offer.

Think of it any way you like, but take it seriously.

We want to keep this site going, and this is what it is going to take. I will still be here to guide and help and direct you. But the main bulk of the managing will be yours as Marcher Lords.

Post or pm me to ask questions or offer your services. I will look at the posting record of those who want to be promoted to see how they will measure up to the task. Being a Marcher Lord is, again, a great responsibility and a great privilege.

With joy and peace in Christ,
Jay Lauser aka Sir Emeth Mimetes

Aw, rats! You will be sorely missed around here!
But I can definitely understand.
I am continually amazed how much time online pursuits can eat up.

I might be interested in helping, though I would want to see
the guidelines/requirements posted before I volunteer. :)

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

All the things that have deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear... We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want . . . which we shall still desire on our deathbeds . . . ~C.S. Lewis

Salutations,

Here are the projected duties of a Marcher Lord:

  • Log in a few times each week and keep up on the main things that are going on
  • Lead the forum's standards by maintaining a professional and mature standard in your own interactions
  • Help guide conversations in mature and productive directions by posting thoughtfully and contributing
  • Keep up on the Citadel and all its activity, answering questions and helping other users (if you do not know the answer to a question, ask one of the older members, look in the archives, or ask me)
  • Actively moderate users by activating new members, promoting able and responsible users (only the head Marcher Lord and myself can promote people to being a Marcher Lord, however), and helping make sure everyone is able to settle in and use the forum easily

That is pretty much it. That is what I am doing, or trying to do (along with some extra technical stuff that I am trying to make automatic). Anything beyond that that is required can be handed off to me to delegate or take care of.

Any questions?

I'd be interested in being a Marcher Lord (except when on a camping trip or some such thing.:D)

It's sad that you're kind of leaving. But I hope you meet those amazing goals! (Whatever they may be.:))

Hey, Jay,
By the way, it's an great idea. It gives you some free time and less stress and lets other people be involved and help out. But I have a question:
Is there an age limit?
Because I would really like to help, even if not with being a Marcher Lord maybe with something else? Just PM me.

I'd love to help somehow, but I'm not sure how often I'd be able to be on here, and I also am trying not to have TOO many responsibilities online because I'll end up forgetting something (and just don't have the time or energy to do things properly on some days).

I would love to be a Marcher Lord, but unfortunately I can only get on once or twice a week during the school year. Maybe I could be a summer-only Marcher Lord?! :P

That would be fine. Basically we need people who are responsible to keep the forum going. I expect that we will need more of that during the summer months anyways. I will promote you.

Just one question, what do Marcher Lords do that moderators don't (or vice versa)?

Nope, not everything. :)

MLs can do everything (in theory, there are some bugs being worked out), except the most system oriented admin stuff. They can make new forums and everything I can do (pretty much). Moderators can only handle threads being moved and stuff like that.

Activate members, change permissions, start new rooms, etc. There are a lot of permissions on a forum.

I would be interested in being a Marcher Lord, but only once I am worthy of the title. Since I am new here I haven't been as involved as most of these people. But as soon as I am worthy, I would love to help! :D

I will definitely keep you in mind.

We have 10 MLs as of last time I checked. This is a good number for now, so there will be less promotions. But keep trying for becoming an Honor Roll Member or a Moderator everyone!

I am interested in being a Marcher Lord, but I'm not sure if I'm responsible or mature enough to guide conversations and answer questions. I come on frequently, but I might get banned from the computer at any time, so I'm not sure how that would work.

If there is any other place where I can help, just pm me! I would love to help, but am not sure what I can do.

Ok that's great. I'll do the best job I can, although I don't know how good that'll be. Thanks! BTW, Sir Emeth, hope you accomplish those goals you were talking about.

I'd love to help in any way I can! I find I'm on this site a lot (probably more than I should) and it's helped me in my writing in more ways than one. I'd love to be a part of keeping this place running.

I love this thread! Does anyone else love this thread? It's like watching history in the making.

I thought I had lost it since all the links went back to the old hosting site, and I couldn't find it in the archives... which explains why I'm  posting on a library thread! I don't want to lose it again. :D

I don't think I really knew what I was getting into when I asked... but I'm glad I did, anyway! :D
