Hey all!
So, I have a fascination with dragons. I love to read stories with them in it. I think that the way they are described is beautiful and strong, and they are amazing fantastical creatures.
I would like to write a story (I have an idea for one any way) that has dragons in it, but I am faced with a moral conflict.
In the Bible Satan is described as the Dragon, and God has nothing good to say about him, and we all know it.
My question to you is this:
Do you think that it is ok to use dragons in your stories? How do you feel about them?
Thank you all!
God bless,
Promised

P.S. After thought! If you guys have any dragons in your stories, what are they like? Do you have any art on them? I would love to see it, and I would love to hear about your dragons.

I definitely think it's okay to use dragons. For one thing, Satan is also described as a lion prowling about, but I've never gotten the impression that lions are inherently evil because of that. So I would say, feel free to use dragons. They're pretty awesome. :D

He's also a snake. And though generally seen as evil and menacing, they're one of God's creations, just like Dragons. (Yes, I'm a firm believer in Dragons.)

Using the same examples a bit, Jesus is also referred to as a lion, and in Exodus, a snake in the wilderness brings healing. I would tend to think snakes are more closely linked to Satan than dragons, but we're still told to be as cunning as serpents. Dogs very often have ill connections in the Bible as well. If you notice, the most literal example of a dragon, the leviathan with sparks coming from its mouth, isn't called evil. He's just a powerful creature of God that was not meant to be tamed.

Hope that helps :D

Y'all really are trying to ruin my dragon blog post!

I find your thoughts interesting, and honestly, this is not the first time I have heard this question asked. So, I have a question. What is your view of Narnia then? Satan is very often portrayed as a lion. More so than as a Dragon, actually. So do you feel that Lewis should not have portrayed Aslan as a lion because of this association?

Also, Biblically and Historically, Dragons were real creatures created by God. They really did breathe fire. What about snakes? You have the fall of man which includes a snake. Do you feel it is wrong to portray snakes? (I almost do just because I dislike them).

I think we have to be careful that we don't link creatures likened unto Satan as being Satanic. The Bible also likens Christ to a Lion and a Lamb, but that does not make these animals sacred or Holy. Thus, I do not feel that dragons can be seen as unholy due to the association.

As a side note, Dragons are not seen throughout history as icons of evil. In fact, they were seen as creatures of life and vitality by many cultures.

Another clue to proof of their existance. How could so many cultures, who had never had any contact with each other, all have the same myths about the same creatures if they never existed?

Which also raises the question: What about little people? (Faries, gnomes, Brownies, Leperchauns) All cultures have legends about them too... Hmm :D

Wow! This helps so much, guys!
I mainly asked because my mother thinks that dragons are very satanic, but I love them!

Don't get me started on Narnia, buddy. C.S. Lewis did a marvelous job at portraying Jesus as Aslan. He made his words so descriptive that you could tell who he was talking about even though Aslan had no "direct" association with Christ.

I'm under the impression that what the world knows as dragons were actually dinosaurs. My mom and I were talking one day and we came to the conclusion that dinosaurs - at least many of them - exhaled something that looked smoky, which lead to the "fire-breathing dragon" folklore.

But if your mom truly has problems with you using dragons, perhaps a heart-to-heart is in order. Probably she is just concerned about the way many people use the fantasies of dragons for evil. For many reasons, I wouldn't write about something my parents didn't want me writing.

I think that is her only problem, the fact that they are depicted as evil by so many people today. She doesn't see the beautiful side of them. :(

Well, we are actually going to have a blog series on this soon, Promised, and perhaps she would like to read it with you.

In my opinion, Satan is not a dragon because of his evil, but because of his majesty. Satan is described as equaling the mightiest beast of legend, myth, and history that we earthling humans have ever known or imagined. Mankind fears/feared dragons. God wants us to fear Satan. Basically, it is seeing Satan as dragonic rather than dragons as Satanic.

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Works in progress:

The Diegosian Mark, 115,600 words (Preparing for Publication)
The Diegosian Rider, 121,400 words (Finished)
The Diegosian Warrior, 15,000 (In Progress)

Wow, that helps a lot as well! I got a book (art book) about dragons last week. There are actually several "types" of dragons according to "legend" one of them is the serpent-like dragon that has no wings but has all of the characteristics of a winged dragon :)

Oh I'm so glad!

Yes, you are right. There are multiple different kinds of legendary dragons.

It gets me more and more excited about dragons :)

I had no idea that there were so many "species" of dragons! It is actually quite facinating. :book:

Technically yes, but I wouldn't count it spelled wrong if you pronounced it the way you spell it.
