You know the drill – write a story, poem, drabble, script, essence map, whatever as inspired by the examples posted on this thread.

Only this time, we’re using Scripture verses.

Single verses or longer passages are accepted. Post the entire passage, unless it’s extremely long, and state the translation you used if possible. Don’t forget the reference.

You can write about the verse literally, if you feel like doing historical fiction. You can do allegory. You can write a story that has the same principle, or perhaps the antithesis of the principle, as the verse. You can take elements from the verse and mix them up. There aren’t any rules for “how” the verse inspires your piece.

This verse has always struck out to me, from the KJV:

Quote:
Acts 19:19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

And to go with, I wrote my very first drabble! This is also the only time I’ve ever dared to really write about a... well, I'll let you read it first...

What an awesome idea! I must do this. And you already know what I think of that fantasmalistic drabble. ;)

I read the drabble earlier, but it gives it even more depth knowing the verse that inspired it.

Yes I do, Aussie. ;) And I sincerely appreciate it! :D

Thanks, Jonathan. I debated posting the verse on my blog. My blog attempts to appeal to a different market, and I thought the piece actually had more power if you don't know going in about the verse. After-the-fact, it helps explain the motivation, though...

Here is a drabble inspired by Proverbs 11:7 (NIV), which says:

When a wicked man dies, his hope perishes; all he expected from his power comes to nothing.

Don’t read this one before you go to bed or if you don’t like scary stories.

“Dark and Strangely Warm”

King Orman awoke. His room was dark and strangely warm for autumn. Since he had went to bed before sunset due to feeling ill, he must have left the window curtains closed.

“Servant!” he cried.

No answer.

He cursed as he got out of bed. “Lazy servants. I’ll do it myself, and execute them in the morning.”

Something moved in the darkness.

“Show yourself!”

No response.

“I am the King!”

“Not here.” Red eyes appeared. “Here, you are one of the damned.”

“This is my castle!”

Other red eyes appeared. “No, Orman. You died, and now you are ours.”

Very rich, Jonathan. You convey that fear of lying down and never waking back up again very well. I think you hit the essence of the translation you used. (I typically use a different translation, so I think of that verse a bit differently, and it's throwing me off. :D)

This drabble was inspired by both Dieki’s forest picture on the picture story challenge and the Bible verse story challenge, for the verse 2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV):

Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

“The Dark Forest”

After an hour, Mateo stopped searching for the path. He was lost in the dark forest.

He held back tears. The monastery would send a monk to find their favorite foolish boy.

Suddenly floating dots of light appeared and danced around him.

Fireflies?

Fairies?

Warm and happy feelings made him drowsy.

He lay down on the ground, surrendering.

“Never sleep in the forest,” the monks had warned. “Evil dwells there.”

He yawned and blinked.

Could the lights be evil?

“Jesus,” he whispered sleepily.

The lights floated backwards.

He stood up.

“Jesus.”

The lights fled.

Looking down, he saw the path.

That was good, Jonathan.

Here's a drabble I did for this verse:

Quote:
So I hated life, because the work that is worked under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
- Ecclesiastes 17:2

The man lying on the bed was jabbering unintelligibly and twitching at intervals. His hands flew about in bizarre patterns, as though conducting an invisible orchestra.

“What is the matter with him?” asked a smartly dressed businessman standing by the bed.

“I haven’t a clue,” the doctor replied. “This is a man who has achieved everything in life, wealth, fame, power, the works. Looking at his health records, the worst issue he has ever had would be a common cold.”

“Can you understand anything he says?”

The doctor frowned, puzzled. “All we can make out is ‘Vanities, nothing but smoke’.”

That was impacting, Bush. I liked that the very last sentence is what made the story "click" and snap into place.

Only two comments... "asked" should not be capitalized in the second paragraph. In the third paragraph, "the doctor replied" should be connected to the first phrase of dialog with a comma and a lowercase letter in "the."

Thanks Philly. :D I was hoping it would convey the meaning without being too vague.

Thankyou for pointing out the corrections, I'm guessing you edited it for me. :D Thankyou!

Actually... no, I didn't. I usually leave editing of actual story up to the author's discretion, out of courtesy. After all, if I don't tell them, they can't fix the error in their original draft, if necessary.
