This story hasn't left me alone for the whole month of November.

The first draft has plenty of plot holes and lots of cheesy dialog, and I'd really like to get around to a second draft one of these days. Incidentally, I don't know how it ends...

In ancient times the world was ruled by the Kings of An. Possessed of power and wisdom, they ruled in beauty and splendor for hundreds of years. There was a law among them, and wars were infrequent. They kept the wizards at bay, and the dreaded name of Souron had not been heard in all their reign. What sort of land-rule they possessed the common people could only guess at, and did not know.
Every reign must falter and every king must fall. The power of the wizards grew, Souron returned out of legend, and overnight the Kings of An vanished. No one knew the circumstance of their passing, only that the land was without a ruler and that magic was loose again. Until the High One came. He had no name, but he bound the wizards, he defeated Souron and he brought peace to the land again, a peace so thorough and absolute that the Kings of An were forgotten. Forgotten by all but one.
Tirol. Not born a wizard, yet able to destroy them. He seeks to destroy the High One and he’s willing to use anyone and destroy anything to do it. He is the first to find Morgon, to recognize his power, and he decides that the helpless wizardling will be the means to his revenge.
Morgon is the son of a wizard and a village woman His mother goes mad with what she saw in the wizards stronghold, and dies a violent death when Morgon is only five. The village priest, Father Matthew takes him under his wing and raises him. The villagers fear his ever-changing eyes, and would have cast him out if they had not been stayed by the priest. Eventually they came to accept him, but no one could meet his gaze.
Tirol’s plans are interfered with by Morgon’s father and the wizards when they decide to take the place of the Kings of An. Morgon is controlled by them for a time, until Tirol telepathically tells him how to destroy the wizards. The power he uses to do so nearly destroys him as well, and his friends embark on a perilous journey to find the one thing that will save his life: Tirol himself.
Tirol saves Morgon’s life but demands his servitude instead. He reveals his plan to Morgon and is shocked by his refusal to learn the power Tirol offers. When Morgon takes ill again Tirol’s power is not enough to save him and he sends for Father Matthew. The priest comes only on one condition, that Tirol swear he will not force his knowledge on Morgon. Morgon is drawn to the power that Tirol offers, but is afraid of the damage he’s seen it do. His own inherent magic, and the compassion that is in him conquers Tirol, stripping of his power, and learning the truth at last.
For Tirol is the last of the Kings of An, and is the only one who can tell the story of the High Lords brutal murder when he ascended to the throne. He is killed at last by the High Lord, revealed to him when Morgon stripped his power, and Morgon understands at last the conspiracy behind the Wizard’s war. With the confidence that Tirol taught him he travels to Revii to challenge the High Lord.
Mallorey Adray never knew his mother, as she was condemned as a witch and burned at stake shortly after he was born. She was turned into the king’s men by her husband when the child she gave birth to had eyes that changed color. The child was rescued by the wizards and raised by them and Mallorey grew up among them, more powerful than they and harboring a hatred of the kings who forced him to live in hiding. He had no love of anyone or anything, and no feeling of loyalty to the wizards he had long ago surpassed. He used them to destroy the Kings of An and then used Morgon to destroy the wizards. After setting himself up as the High Lord he lived in wealth and splendor, taking what he wanted and giving nothing to the realm. He fears only one thing. Morgon’s eyes.
