I can beat that. I got 18 Harvard Classics for $18. THEN I got a complete set of Brittanica Encyclopedia from 1992 for $5 total. TOTAL.

My library was selling both of those. Also, Goodwill and salvation army are good places to find amazing deals on awesome books.

I have a few under my pillow and two or three stacks next to my bed (the nightstand statement was an attempt at stereotyping). No books in my bed, that's where the laundry goes so I have more room for books on the floor.

It's not uncommon for you to be seen with graphite/ink smudged on the side of your hand.

When you know which pen takes the longest to be washed off your hand and that is the only one you buy/carry just in case a story idea comes and you *gasp* don't have a notebook.

I haven't tried everything. ;) But Bic Atlantis is pretty good. Writes well, stays put for a while, although washing your hands can fade it pretty quickly. Your run-of-the-mill cheap blue ballpoint ink pen may also work, but it can be painful to write with. They tend to stay on skin a while, though it's kind of hit-and-miss. Never use a manga marker, they wash off with practically no traces left right away. :P (fortunately when I found that out all I had was an anime face on my hand, not some important story notes! )

Bic Atlantis you say... Hmm... :D

You know you're a crazy fantasy writer when...

... you think a new notebook and pen is the best treat ever. (of course you need another one...)
... the first thing you think about when seeing a new square at a new theatre is 'it would be so cool if a dragon lands here'.
... the second thing you think about is 'I wonder if a dragon would fit here without leveling the buildings'.
... the third thing you think about is 'why didn't I bring my sword?'
... the fourth thing is 'I need to incorporate this in a story and reach for your trusty notebook you keep on your person at all times for just such an occasion. :D

... and this does not sound at all strange to you...

Making stories up about the monstrous crocodiles living in the pool of water outside your office, of course, have nothing to do with it...

This happens to me a lot being left-handed. It's very annoying. :P (If you are constituting to left-handedness here's a thread on that subject viewtopic.php?f=32&t=653) :D

Left-handedness does have that drawback =P

Actually, Pilot G-2 07 pens are really good for writing on your hand...they're gel so they sort of *soak* in to your skin :D *throws .02 in the ring*

...when you have a certain kind of pen for every occasion.

Pilot G2s are great for journaling but I use papermate erasables for the stuff I don't want to mess up.

...when people look at you weird after handing you a pen because you discuss it with them the same way you might a new car.

...you still have a stash of college ruled notebook paper left over from back when you used to write everything by hand.

...you have a large collection of pencils that you sharpened almost all the way to the eraser but you haven't thrown away yet because they still have a little writing left in them.

*raises hand* Guilty. :D Actually, my brother gave me a hollow piece of aluminium from an arrow shaft, he cut it down to pencil size, and I shoved two of my superest short pencils in each end so I have something to hold onto while I use them. :D

In second grade (my last year in public school) it was cool to have pencils sharpened to a minimal length!

I never liked mech-pencils. They gave off a high-pitched squeaky noise that my radar ears could not handle.

A squeaky noise when it writes? Or the pencil itself? ;)

Yeah, the squeaky noise is annoying, but after doing a cost-benefit analysis, they come out ahead.

Actually, Pilot G-2 Pens are my favorite.

Most definitely. I hate standard pencils, it's so hard to get a neat, smooth line for delicate features in drawing. Like drawing a character's eyes. The eyes are the most important part of my drawings, and you just can't draw them with an ordinary pencil!

I'm good, that was my short rant for the day. :D

I don't mean to derail this, but I will add:

The mechanical pencils I write with don't squeak. (Probably because I get some nice ones.) We do have cheap ones that have an annoying squeakiness to them. ><

Ciela: Actually, drawing was what got me hooked on mech pencils because of its precision.

You know you're a crazy fantasy writer when you discuss the pros and cons of regular pencils versus mechanical pencils.

*waves Topic Control Police badge* Let's move on from the pencil discussion now, folks. ;)

I just found this, perusing this thread... awesome!

You know you are a crazy fantasy writer:
when you tell your little brother to be quiet with, "Be silent... keep your forked tongue behind your teeth."
when you think, "if magic like the one in my world were real life would be so much easier."
when you routinely make decisions by talking to yourself in alternating voices
when you personify your temptations as Nazgul and your troubles as balrogs...

or are all of those things unique to me and mostly just for us LOTR addicts?

I need to start doing this!!! It would make decision making easier!

Oh, um... you know you're a crazy fantasy writer when you're slightly jealous of other fantasy writers' crazy habits.
