Let me premise this post by mentioning my number one pet peeve: Calling a cipher, a language.

On to my language: It was formed by the need of the Hubnor, for a way to communicate to others. The language's simplicity is undeniable. I only uses 11 different sounds. Each written character is based on the formation of the sound.

The first is "─" and is formed by not changing the air as it flows.
(The H sound for English speaking people.)

Next "│" is formed by blocking all air flow. It can be made by allowing the air to barely flow over the top of tongue, with it raised to the roof of the mouth. (Kinda like the T or C sound.)

All other sounds are formed combining the placement of these 2 forms. What you get is: "┌","┐","└", and "┘" Going down the list the sounds made are: T-H, H-T, C-H, and H-C.

The next set of of letters is: "├","┤","┬", and "┴" The sounds created are T-C-H, C-T-H, H-C-T, and H-T-C.

Just for note: The Hubnor do not have the use of lips.

Wow, that is cool! :shock: Although I find it a little hard to understand, that's awesome you've designed a whole language! Well done! :D

While I would have to study it further before I could truly understood how it works (much less how to speak it), I will say that this is an intriguing system. I love the styling of your set of characters; I think they would look fantastical strung out in sentences. It has a feel like Arabic, but more clean-cut.

How are vowel sounds made? Are words and sentences formed largely like they are in English?

The Hubnor sound interesting. You should consider posting a thread about them.

That looks like a cool language. I tried pronouncing some of the characters and my little brother thought I was sneezing. :D Then I strung a bunch together and he looked really confused. Good job, though. Now you need to come up with a dictionary and some grammar rules. ;)

:rofl: Elanhill! This is so funny! I can just imagine you doing that.

Very cool, Welt! Way to go!! I've never even thought of making a language up, must be very hard! Impressive!

Ok, Philadelphia, here is a quick into to the hubnor:

The Hubnor live here:
Image

Its name is: {─┴│─┴┬─}
It comes from the root of Hubnorian "phrases" for: occupied space, {─┴┬─├┴─┤┘}; and weight, {┘┐─┴│}.

Hubnor, was built upon what we call verbs. At first it was used to describe actions like:
Come {├┘}
Go {├┐}
Bring {├┘┤}
Take {├┐┤}

Some background on the syntax Hubnor, before we go any further. Groups of "Words" are fall into 2 categories: Attributes, and Names.

Names are used to as nouns in English.
A name would be given to a child when the red moon would make it's second pass over the sky, since the child's birth. It would be chosen by both the child and the mother of the child. Most names embodied a likeness they saw in the child, like goodness, speed, stealth, or hight.

After the death of an individual their name would become the meaning of their life. If they had been kind {name for kind here}, but also strong {name for strong here}; now someone could use their name rather then both names. The best part is the "Names" for "Kind," and "Strong" come from other names. The language changes which each generation, and is always growing.

There are also Attributes. These mostly show movement.
come, or decrease distance between objects {┘}
go, or increase distance between objects {┐}
come and, shows that there is continued action after the come {┴}
go and, shows that there is continued action after the go {┬}

├, and ┤ are special because they identify Names, and where they should be. (also a name can never start with a ├, or end with a ┤)

So a complete sentence in hubnor would be something like: ┴┐┘┐ ├┘┤ ┘─. (And there you have it: The first sentence in hubnor ever written.) I roughly says: ┴┐┘┐bring ┘─ here. In proper hubnor there should be 2 ┤'s at the end of the attribute.

The first name after the closing ┤┤ of the attribute tells of what, and the second deals with where. In the case of where the location is that of the speaker the second ┤ is dropped. And in the case where the listener is the first ┤ is dropped. if I want ┴┐┘┐ to come here; all I would need to say would be: ┴┐┘┐ ├┘.

That is all I want to write for now. Although I will be starting a dictionary of hubnor names soon. Stay tuned. :D

EDIT:
here is try 2 at the planet that they live on.

Wow. That is impressive. I can't honestly say that I followed all that you wrote, but...I wish I could =) Kudos for making such a well-developed language!

(And I love your planet illustration. Actually, I like the first one better. :D)

That is the kind of language I love.

I would like to become fluent in it.

Yep, they're some of the "Box" characters in Unicode spaces: U+2500 - U+256C.

Fun note: To get to them hold the "Windows" key and press "R" to bring up the run dialog. Then just type: "charmap" into the text box, and hit enter
. (2/3s of the way down the list of characters you should see these.)

My sea-men (called Orks) do not have the use of their lips either (as you would expect), but neither can they pronounce H.

Umm, okay... I'm not sure how one would communicate without the use of lips... I'd be glad if you would help me out there.

The Hubnor apparently do so by excluding labials such as B, P, F, and so on.
I shall start a thread on Ork speech here in the scriptorium.
