I was just wondering if any of you guys have linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora)
I have ubuntu and I really like it...

I have Windows 7 and haven't looked back since I got it. It's way more powerful than Windows XP which is what I was using before. JumpLists are amazing, as is Office 2010 (great for writing ). The all-around tightness and polish of the OS just makes it seem...fun, almost...to use...

What do you like about Linux? What Linux distribution is the best? I've thought about dual-booting my laptop with Win7 and Ubuntu before, but I've never had time to do so yet.

I dual-boot with Windows 7 Starter and Ubuntu Netbook Edition.

My brother is really big into Linux; I'm sure he could direct you to the version you need for your computing needs easily, eruheran. (You follow me on Buzz, I believe, so all I'd need to do is to start a buzz about it and @ him to it...)

I'm not a huge linux fan myself (I understand Windows. It's familiar to me. I like it. Why change?) so I don't know the intricacies of the different editions. But I've seen Slax, PuppyLinux, Ubuntu, and Ubuntu Netbook Edition for sure.

Yea, I have ubuntu...I love it, so much to do and so many ways to do it...You can actually run windows games using PlayOnLinux which I use and love it...If your not technical don't get linux if you are, GET IT

I use Ubuntu exclusively. And although I am a computer tech geek (don't ask me to prove it, I will), the recent versions of Ubuntu are very easy to use for non-techie people. Honestly.

My oldest brother started using Linux after he went through a challenge with a friend at college (they decided to swap OS for a week and see if they still liked their old one -- my brother was converted! ).

I still use Windows (7 to be exact) mainly because I know what I'm doing and I've never really thought of asking for a copy of Ubuntu.
Don't have a mac, though if I really do go for a digital design major I'll probably end up with one (Nooooooo! ).

Ok, this is slightly off topic but I didn't feel it warranted creating a new thread. I've found an Ubuntu 10.04 CD laying around here--what's the easiest way to get my laptop to dualboot? (And I can follow complicated directions )

I believe if you mount off the CD it will give you instructions on how to do that.

I have Windows 7. I've used most versions of Windows, I think, but not Mac or Linux. I think an uncle of mine uses Linux, but I've never looked at it.
What's the advantages of Linux over Windows? Are there things you can't do on Linux that you would do on Windows?

Only if you are a hard-core gamer addicted to Crysis, or if you are a professional, whose job requires you to use only the Microsoft versions of things (which you can still work around if you have to).

I don't do games on the computer, since I haven't found anything. I just use it for internet, writing, storing pictures, and Photoshop/Illustrator stuff for my drawings.

Is Linux compatible with... everything? I have Windows Vista (works well for an artist), and I have nothing but problems with it not being compatible with stuff.

Vista is Windows. XP, Vista, and Windows 7 are probably the versions of the Windows OS you'll hear about most right now.

I've never seriously thought about trying something else like Linux. I don't think I'm computer savvy enough to want to try.

Photoshop and Illustrator can be replaced (more or less) by Gimp and Inkscape, both free, open source programs that do the same stuff.

If you are desperate for the others, you can always run 'em in Wine or Vmware, which trick the computer into thinking you have Windows installed, so you can run Windows only stuff on there.

In general Linux is more friendly with you than Windows when it comes to getting stuff to work.

(I must beg to differ about Gimp/Photoshop-unless Linux Gimp is more powerful than Windows Gimp...)

I've heard of wine and I've heard of Linux (obviously) and I could see some benefits for me to maybe dual-boot the two, but really at this point in time I don't want to have to tinker with it. =) (I mainly decided this after I looked up on Google 'dual boot Windows and Linux' and the first tutorial said, "Completely wiping and reinstalling two OSes on your computer only takes about two hours if you know what you're doing." Not for me...)

Linux Gimp is actually different from Windows Gimp. Linux Gimp has a lot more stuff than Windows Gimp. A lot. Lots of professionals use Gimp exclusively.

Hahaha... well, honestly, that tutorial was talking about something else. And you generally should look at multiple tutorials before making a judgment call. That one could be talking about something completely different.

It was talking about doing some sort of 'clean' dual-boot--I'm not sure. I've never messed with this stuff before. I'll check out the one you showed me, though.

My take is, Linux was designed by programmers for programmers. Everyone says it's easy and intuitive, but it takes me a week to get it set up to do normal things (like play video) a week of getting my dad to write out commands. I've reinstalled Linux a dozen times now, (and my current installation stubbornly refuses to run, we think it's a driver issue,) so I'm pretty familiar with the work that goes into it to make is usable for a non-tech-savvy person. (such as my mother.)

There are a lot of Windows programs you can run on Linux, and there are a lot you cannot. I continue to insist on dual booting, leaving my Windows installation intact, because I want the best of both operating systems.

My sister runs Windows 7. I've worked on a Windows Vista. 7 has some cool stuff, but I still prefer XP. Vista had a gazillion problems and while 7 fixed most of them, my sister can't print over a network printer, and has other issues she constantly needs me to come troubleshoot. I shudder at the idea of using Vista, ad I don't think 7 does anything that Linux wouldn't do for me. Our family computers work off a very sophisticated networking system and anything that chokes up over wireless networking like Vista does would never get along well here.

I've never heard anyone say that it's easy. People usually say that is is more complicated than Windows (at least that's what I've heard).

Windows. I love it. As long as it behaves.
