I recently got the idea of writing a story about human-like creatures who were 'in charge of light' in a sense. For example, when they cupped their hands, instead of blocking out the light and darkness being inside, there was light inside. This also means that their shadow is a bright shape of light.

Maybe light and darkness could even be a physical thing? :P

I thought that the light creatures should have their own world so that their secret would be left undiscovered (that is until someone from earth finds out).

Well, I don't want to spoil too much of the story. Do you have any ideas?

You could make it a Christian allegory, with literal representations of light and darkness and good and evil.

I like the idea, sis! ;)

The only problem is one we went over in the car a while ago: there really is no such thing as darkness. Darkness is simply the absence of light, just like cold is the absence of heat. You can't shine a "flashdark" onto the wall and make a patch of darkness like you can shine a flashlight and put light onto the wall (so to speak).

Of course, this is all just how our world works. If you explained things properly, I'm sure you could work a reasonable explanation for why darkness and light are two separate things of themselves. You would just have to have a good reason to get me to believe it. ;)

Can't wait to see what you come up with! (And if you need help, I'm here. ;))

I like it. I'm usually a huge advocate for darkness as the absence of light. But creatures made of light so to speak sounds cool!

I like the idea of their shadows. You could maybe use it so that the "dark" people are simply absent of light. (And light trumps all, by the way. :D) I like the idea, it sounds really cool, and I would most definitely read it! :D

Thanks for the ideas! I really appreciate it. :D

I think that I will go with the idea of having light and darkness being a physical thing. Any ideas of how that could work?

Would they be on the same plane/level of existence as we are? Would people be able to see them? How would they interact? Would light instantly beat darkness? If there are people in the story, do they follow one or the other? How/would that change them physically/spiritually/mentally? Could they be redeemed?

Wow! Great questions, Shawn, I'd have to think about that. Did you have any ideas? If so, that would be great! :D

Well, my questions were my ideas, in a way, but I shall brainstorm some more! :D

Thanks! :D

Here are some answers to the questions that you asked:

Would they be on the same plane/level of existence as we are? NO, they'd be in a brighter place.

Would people be able to see them? YES, but they are very bright and hard to see.

Would light instantly beat darkness? YES

I like the answer to the last question. :) My point in asking that was I was wondering how you would portray conflict beneath the two.

Yeah! Now I have it. Thanks, Shawn. My story can be a battle between light and darkness! Maybe light will not instantly overpower darkness though to make it a fight worth fighting.

Well, light just makes shadows. The only way to get rid of a shadow is to turn off the lights.

Here are some of my thoughts.

How/what do they eat?

To us a sunbeam is a sunbeam. What is it to them? A road, a plant, a shadow, a person?

How do they sleep/when is night?

Our world is alive because of light, why is theirs alive?

RANDOM BRAINSTORM: The sun could be their planet and what we really see is them.

Are they the only beings like this or is it a whole world based on light?

ANOTHER RANDOM BRAINSTORM: Sunspots could be proof that they're fighting darkness.

Right, that's all I've got for now.
