Because this seems to be a recurring topic
I thought we'd make a thread
to gather all of our tips, links, and methods for naming
into a central spot to make it easier for everyone to find and use them.

If you have a method for naming things
or tricks that help you to pick names please post them here! :D

The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshippers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.

All the things that have deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of it—tantalising glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear... We cannot tell each other about it. It is the secret signature of each soul, the incommunicable and unappeasable want . . . which we shall still desire on our deathbeds . . . ~C.S. Lewis

Good thinking! I really like the name generator. Inesdar, the one thing I have troubles with is male character names. Could I contact you if I need help?

Thanks for all of the ideas.

The link below is to an article on how to make a basic language with almost no grammar that can be used to generate names for characters, places, etc. It's a little less involved than the Language Construction Kit. And a Naming Language can take less time to make than a fully functional conlang the web address is:
http://www.langmaker.com/ml0102.htm
Hope it helps.

I've never had problems naming characters. Forlendo Alistar, Aurelian Alistar, Dennik, Natania Falrell, Feyron Falrell, Tyrillius Falrell, Tauflik, Sarflix, Cordrim, Falrock, Fardiran, Mikar, Tarkov, Kalzahan, Thornlin Arcrist...

But I can't seem to think of any tips. :? Sometimes I modify existing names. For the most part I sift through my list of over 300 Elvish words and assemble new names from them.

http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/elvish/names.html This is the elvish name translator that I use all the time online. It's really good.

I have some really good websites, and I'd be willing to help with names.

Hmm. I don't know. I'm still working on the language, by now I've got grammar and syntax down and what lies ahead is pretty much an exhaustive time of making up new words. :? I may introduce my elvish language to you later, when it's a little more developed and I have time to write up a whole thing on the mechanics of it.

Oh! See, I thought when you said a list of Elvish words that you meant Quenya or Sindarin. I didn't realize you were referring to a language of your own making. By all means keep that, it's yours :)

;) That's the problem with making my own Elvish...it isn't the only language called 'Elvish'. I need a unique name for it...

Name generators! Those are so fun. I don't usually have trouble coming up with names, but when I can't think of one right away I use my Large and Important Baby Name Book. (Well, that's not really what it's called. I think the title is more like 100,000 Baby Names, or something -- doesn't really matter.) There are so many awesome and rarely-used names, particularly variations of well-known ones, that I've always been able to find a name within a matter of minutes.

So yes. Rather too obvious, but it works. <.<

(Celtic names, especially Welsh, are always lovely and fantasyish -- and when the spelling's a bit varied they're not too recognizable from mythology.)

Strange how we always believe in the ones with a lifetime of anguish in their souls and faces. Perhaps that is why we trusted Stepan--and why we broke him. It's as if the heavier the load they carry, the better they can bear a little more; and not until the burdens crush them do we realize what we have done."

"Only it is their choice," Ishmil said gently. "We may give them overmuch to carry but in the end they must decide what they are willing to lose for love. Burdens fade in the light of a question like that."
