I am reading it. :) I meant it when I said I would start reading it... I am already on page 246. Out of 1008. :D So it will be a few more days. Maybe. I do have lots of time to read today, though, so we'll see. I'll let you know.

And I do like the book much better than the movie. Of course. So many things are making sense now. It's great. :)

Books are always better *grins*
But yes, it will make more sense when you read the books. You might also consider reading The Hobbit. It will explain more about where Bilbo got the ring.
You can also read more of Tolkien's books if you get REALLY addicted ;)

It stinks that they left at least 3 chapters out of the movies, though... That would have been awesome. But can you imagine how long the movies would be then?

I agree... books always do seem to be better. :)

I actually read most of the Hobbit already! I know, it's kind of strange that I read that and not the other books. :)

Yes, they left out some good stuff... :( But then the movies would have been really, really, really long. They're already super long. :)

Well, in a way I am glad they left out the scouring of the Shire and Tom Bombadil. They could have so easily messed them up utterly.

Yeah, they probably would have messed Tom Bombadil up. Josiah and I agree. :) I'm on page 362 now.

But how can you put Tom in a movie? It just doesn't work. When you're watching a movie, an inconsequential, random, mysterious character popping up to provide comic relief for five minutes isn't funny. At least, it's not funny in a movie about Rings of Power, Orcs, and Returning Kings.

Tom is great...in the book. As for the scouring of the Shire, I think they decide that killing Saruman was essential, and that it would be wrong to have the scouring with Saruman.

Whoo-hoo! Count me in! I can't wait!!! ^^
But I think it's not coming out until 2011 and 2012 or 2012 and 2013 (they're making two parts. Or at least that's what I've heard)

I'm also planning on going to watch The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader in theaters December 2010.

Why is it that we have to wait so long for all of the good movies??? :)

I was disappointed that they left the scouring of the Shire out of the movie; that was one of my favorite parts in the book!
I wasn't so disappointed about Tom Bombadil, though. I don't know why, but he kind of bugged me in the book. It probably because there were so many pages devoted to him that didn't have a whole lot to do with the ring or anything.

Well, last night I finished reading The Lord of the Rings! Josiah owns the one book volume, hence me referring to it as one book. I must say that I like LotR a great deal better now, and find it far less confusing. I now know most of their names. :) In the movie it's hard to catch them all.

Of course you like it better now! :D

J.R.R. Tolkien actually wrote it as one book, but the publisher wouldn't let him publish it that way. He then divided it into six volumes, but the publisher made it a trilogy. :)

The names are hard to catch in the movies. Pop quiz: what is Gandalf's real name? It is in the books... (You do not get to ask Josiah! ;) )

Legolas  is the best with Aragorn and Gimli tied for a close second :) .
Frodo's not that bad, everybody keeps on saying they like Sam more  , but I don't think things would have turned out so well if their roles were reversed. It is true that without Sam Frodo would never have gotten rid of the ring, but without Frodo, the ring would never have gotten to Mordor in the first place. He was destined to be THE RING BEARER and no one else could do it for him.

It's in there too, as well as in The Unfinished Tales. But the original challenge was to figure it out from the Lord of the Rings alone. :) It is in there too (at least you can deduce it from there).

My favorite characters in LotR are Gandalf, Éowyn and Faramir, then Legolas, Aragorn and Arwen. I like Gandalf because he is the wisest; he's powerful but he is kind to his friends, especially the Halflings. I like Éowyn because she wasn't content to just sit around knitting and drinking tea while the guys went to battle. I'm glad she learned her lesson, though. Also, I love horses, so it's natural for me to like someone whose name means "horse joy" (or something like that.) And I liked Faramir because he was a good fighter but didn't rejoice in battle. I liked him better in the book, though.

I tried reading the Silmarillion, but the history totally bogged me down. Well, it was better than real-world history. :P

EDIT: I am now working on getting through the Simarillion, partly because I'm meeting up with my long-lost friend (who's a big Tolkien fan) and also because it was recommended as good reading for world-builders (Thanks, Neil. :D). The vocabulary is probably really good for my brain.
