I read a truly excellent article recently on the contextual implications of Edmund's wish for Turkish Delight. It opened up a cupboard of thought I had yet much to explore, but was very helpful as my Writing & Research students have become very familiar with Edmund's choices through our curriculum examples.

It made me hungry for more explanations.

My mind settled on Aslan's How. I dearly want to know the symbolism behind that old mound, somehow having the sense of the ancient, even though we remember so many happy times before it was erected. I did some digging. I didn't find quite what I had hoped, but I did find a compelling essay entitled Faith and the Journey to Aslan's Kingdom. Isn't it? I mean, none of it excuses the behavior of course---one finds in Narnia what one seeks---but the rationale behind it, and considering the fact that Edmund did not get a Christmas present. It's just fascinating.

Thanks for those! It is always so fascinating to delve deeper into the context that inspired the stories, and the deeper motivations and complexities of the characters.

I agree that I never quite understood Aslan's How. The air of ancient-ness made me wonder when exactly it was made and why. The link to the second article wouldn't work for me, though. It took me to a website for the Intercollegiate Studies Institute... Is it something you have be a member of to see?

I'm not a member, so it shouldn't be... *clicks* Access must have been modified or something. I can't get into it now either, or find a place to get it online without signing in somewhere.

I'm really curious about who built it. There isn't any lore surrounding the place, it's just there now, in the heart of Old Narnia. Did no one notice it being built? Would they not have remembered? To have those ancient symbols, it must have been built by deep magic, but wouldn't anyone have noticed?
