I wasn't originally going to comment here (honestly, I was just perusing through), but this comment caught my eye.

Having been to Japan twice, and knowing a little Japanese, I can vouch for at least the pronunciation. 四 (pronounced "Shi") is the number four, and 死ぬ (pronounced "shinu"), is death.
As far as it being considered unlucky, I haven't seen that in Japan, but it's probably because I wasn't looking. I'll have to ask my friend Kazuya about that... Unlucky numbers fascinate me too! I had always wondered about thirteen, thanks for a couple back stories
This is a really really cool post, I will be thinking about developing some superstitions for my different countries now to give them a bit more of a real feeling...
