Y por usarlo, comprendiste mal mi pregunta. El traductor la traduce así:

Were writing well before this sentence. Do yourself and others wrote that the Google translator?

Pero la traducción correcta es:

You were writing very well before this sentence. Did you write the others yourself and this one Google Translator [wrote]?

EDIT: De verdad, es probablemente mejor si tú no usas el traductor nada, sino adivinas los sentidos de las oraciones o pides mi ayuda o la de alguien demás que entiende español. El traductor está frecuentemente espactacularmente en lo incorrecto, así que a veces sería mejor si no supieras nada y supieras que no supieras nada que si creyeras saber algo por usar Google.

As an example, Google translates the above as:

Really, it's probably better if you do not use the translator at all, but guess the meanings of sentences or ask my help or someone else who understands Spanish. The translator is often espactacularmente in wrong, so sometimes it would be better if you know nothing and know that you know nothing if you did know something by using Google.

That's relatively close, but the last sentence is totally off. The correct meaning is:

Really, it's probably better if you don't use the translator at all, but guess the meanings of sentences or ask my help, or that of someone else who understands Spanish. The translator is often spectacularly wrong, to the point where sometimes it would better if you knew nothing and knew that you knew nothing than if you believed that you knew something because you used Google.

Hrm, yeah, I've heard the translator translates things wrong some of the time, and I get your meaning about ir being better knowing nothing. :?
I'm only just starting to learn Spanish, so I'll need all the help I can get. :P But it's something that I would really like to learn, and I'd appreciate your help. :)

Gracias, Señor. :D

OK. ¿Por cuánto tiempo has estado estudiando español?

OK. For how long[how much time] have you been studying Spanish?

Note: If I put a translation in brackets within the larger translation, it's a more literal translation of the part just before it. For example, above "¿cuánto tiempo?" is literally "how much time?", but in English we say "how long?", so I bracketed the former after the latter.

OK. Here's how to put that into proper Spanish [with English translations for the vocabulary below, although the grammar and word order remains Spanish]:

Comencé a estudiar español hace aproximadamente tres años en un programa

I began to study Spanish ago approximately three years in a program

de computadora, y retuve muy poco de lo que aprendí, así que necesitaré

of computer, and I retained very little of what I learned, so that I will need

aprender las palabras básicas.

To learn the words basic.

Está bien. No te preocupes, aprenderás poco a poco. Hasta la fecha a veces uso una palabra inglés cuando mi vocabulario español me falta. Un vocabulario básico es necesario para comenzar, y más tarde necesitarás conocer muchas palabras, pero pienso que lo de que los estudiantes de idiomas muchas veces se olvidan es que aprender la gramática es más difícil y más importante. Cualquier persona puede memorizar una lista de palabras, pero el que no conoce la gramática no hablará nunca el idioma por todo el vocabulario que pueda repetir.

It's OK. Don't worry about it, you'll learn little by little. To this day I sometimes use an English word when my Spanish vocabulary fails me. A basic vocabulary is necessary to start, and later you'll need to know a lot of words, but I think that what students of languages often forget is that learning the grammar is more difficult and more important. Anyone can memorize a list of words, but he who does not know the grammar will never speak the language no matter how many words he can repeat.

With that in mind, you should read this page to learn the basic regular verb forms, and also the forms for the two most common irregular verbs, estar and ser (just worry about the present indicative forms for now), both meaning, in different contexts, "to be."

Por la misma razón que casi todos los traductores electrónicos son inútiles; no entienden lenguaje y son poco más que diccionarios bilingües.

For the same reason that almost all electronic translators are useless; they don't understand language and are little more than bilingual dictionaries.

I've been studying Spanish for a while. My tutor says I'm becoming quite good, and don't sound like a gringo. (My accent is much more fluent than my grammar, unfortunately.)

On a humorous note, Spanish is not actually my tutors first language. She is originally from Brazil, so here native language is Portuguese. She moved to the US and studied at BSU (GO BRONCOS! ;) ), where she learned English. Then she decided to learn Spanish.

So, Spanish is technically her third language. If you get her really excited, she'll start mixing Portuguese into her Spanish, which, as those of you understand such things will know, is incredibly confusing.

She says that, if I went to Mexico, nobody would be able to tell I was American by my accent, but they might think I was Brazilian.

(For those of you wondering why this is not written in Spanish, know that I went to ASL class tonight, and can barely think at all, let alone in Spanish.)

For all men have a master. But a man cannot have two masters. For he will love one and hate the other. You cannot serve God and sin. So I die to the old, as He died, and I am resurrected to the new, as He was resurrected.

Note: Ebed is Hebrew for bondsman, Eleutheros is Greek for unrestrained (not a slave).

I'm going to see if I can translate back and forth from English to Spanish, then someone can tell me when I'm doing it wrong:

A woman drives a small red car.

La mujer conduce un coche pequeno rojo.

How many cups do you have?

Cuantos tazas tienen ustedes?

We have four cups.

Nosotros tenemos cuatro tazas.

I have a red flower.

Yo tengo una flor rojo.

Are you writing? Yes. I am writing.

Esta usted escribiendo? Si. Estoy escribiendo.

Pequeño, not "pequeno". And if it's "A woman," it's Una mujer. La mujer means "the woman."

DairyMaid wrote:

Cuantos tazas tienen ustedes?

Correct: ¿Cuántas tazas tienen ustedes?

Three points:

1. A Spanish question requires an inverted question mark (¿) at the beginning.

2. When using the interrogative pronouns qué, quién, cuánto, etc., an accent mark is placed over the vowel in the emphasized syllable. Note that in quién "i" is actually a consonant.

3. The interrogative pronoun ("Cuantos" in your version) needs to be feminine plural, because tazas is feminine plural. You had it as masculine plural. Cuántas is correct.)

DairyMaid wrote:

Nosotros tenemos cuatro tazas.

Technically correct, but probably not the way you want to say it. In Spanish, the only time you really need subject pronouns is:

1. If it is necessary to distinguish between the third person and the formal second person.
2. If you want to give special emphasis to the pronoun.

So what you wrote translates as something like "It is we, not they, who have four cups." Drop the nosotros and it's more natural.

DairyMaid wrote:
I have a red flower.

Yo tengo una flor rojo.

Same as above. Also, flor is feminine. It's una flor, not "un flor."

DairyMaid wrote:
Are you writing? Yes. I am writing.

Esta usted escribiendo? Si. Estoy escribiendo.

What you wrote translates as:

This you writing? If. I am writing.

You have to put the accent marks in the right places (if you're on a Mac, I can teach you how to type them. Otherwise, it shouldn't be too hard to find.) The ´ that you left off the a in está changes it from "you are" to "this," while the one you left off the i in changes it from "yes" to "if/whether."

Correct:

¿Está usted escribiendo? Sí. Estoy escribiendo.

Thankyou for correcting me, Sam. :D
I can't make all the upside down question marks, apostrophes, etc, etc, with this keyboard, because I don't have everything needed to do it. I would have to go into GT (Google Translator) to get the apostrophes and everything. :P
So I would've fixed all that was needed with punctuation.
But everything you said makes sense, and it's helped me understand it better. :D
I have a Windows XP computer, by the way. :)

You're welcome.

I almost certainly have the same keyboard that you do. There are ways to type most of the marks, I think. This page should help: http://www.spanishdict.com/answers/1008 ... d-accents-

I know a lot of Spanish vocab, but am not very good at grammar or at keeping a conversation... I was pursuing it until my Spanish teacher moved to Australia. :P So I've been pursuing other options, but most of them have to do with knowing more vocab, and not practicing grammar or conversations...

I am learning Spanish.
I am reading the Spanish Bible, by reading a verse, then reading the same verse in the English Bible. This is where I am reading the Spanish Bible:
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=genesis%201&version=RVA

I learned how to pronounce Spanish at this site:
http://www.studyspanish.com/pronunciation/

Here is me reading some of the Spanish Bible out loud not too long ago; I am reading the passage about the fire and hail smiting Egypt.

These tricks do not work on Linux unfortunately. I know maybe half a dozen words at the most and likely won't learn much more but the inability to type Spanish letters is rather annoying

It is working very well. I read the Spanish out loud, and then look down at the English.

The link to where I learned Spanish pronunciation is very good: it is free, and has clear recordings of a native Spanish speaker from Spain and one from Peru, giving multiple examples which you can listen to as many times as you want.
