Greetings HW! After praying and speaking with friends and comrades, I have decided to begin part of my writing journey through the practice of keeping an online journal in two places:

The first will be at http://joshuassandefur.wordpress.com. I decided on this one primarily as a response to a conversation my wife and I had about keeping a journal during the time she is pregnant as I allow God to change me from a husband to a father. It will continue on after that as my wife, our daughter and I grow.

The second will be at http://www.WhispersFromTheKing.com. This will be the official place where I keep the parables and psalms (poetry) that I write from time to time. My hope with this site is that it would be a haven for those who are battle weary to be strengthened and to be reminded of who they are in Christ.

I want to ask those here who have a blog/website if you have any advice to a beginning blogger/writer. I know we all have capacity to grow in our knowledge of craft, but there is a practical wisdom that comes with experience as well. Any resources (websites, books, blogs) would be appreciated as well.

I am excited to see how beginning to write again will grow. :dieshappy:

Hmm... I've had a blog for a year or two now. I don't have any particular advice. I've noticed that I prefer Blogger over Wordpress. Blogger is just easier for me to comprehend. But you already chose which sites you were going to use, so never mind that.

With your JoshuaSSandefur blog, the only advice I have would be to post at least someone consistently; I have the problem of posting sporadically, which makes it harder for my followers to know when to check back for a post (unless they check their blog feed every day, which I doubt many of them do).

I don't think it's as important to post consistently with your writing blog, though it might be nice to if you have the time. I don't think it's as important though, since most people should realize that writing takes time, and you can't have a new piece of writing up at the exact same time each week/month/etcetera.

I'll try to think of more advice. Until then, I wish you the best of luck! :D

Copyblogger is a really good site. Go down to the tutorials. They have a lot of material that can help bloggers. :)

I love your blogs, Joshua. :) I really like the themes you have used.

To be honest I'm not a blogger. I do have a blog, but I don't use it much. So the only advice I can give is to post consistently, on a regular basis maybe even on the same day every week, so people get used to when your posts come out. Also, I can't seem to follow your blog? It's a good option to have, as people who have follow get reminders every time you post, so they come and read etc. I may just be missing it, but I can't spot the Follow button etc. :)

CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

But really, consistency is very important. With my blog, I tend to post on a whim, after the whim has been thought through for several months before I get the words just right. That doesn't really work well for a blog... I'm trying to revamp it and plan out and write several posts so I can release them weekly or something... So if you learn a whole lot in one week, write about it, but maybe stagger the posts a bit just in case you only learn a one blog post lesson over the next week. :D

I agree with everyone else. Post consistently and post interesting stuff. Maybe make a schedule for yourself if that's easier.
And if you have an idea, write it down before the last minute, because it's a real pain to realize "I have to release a post today!" and have to scrounge for a post in five minutes. I speak from experience. :P
