I will take the ring to Mordor! Though...I do not know the way....
Ok. So it's nothing that epic, but hey, I'm not a hobbit either so it's ok.

Next summer starting somewhere around the 20th of May I will be walking across the country to raise money for a ministry called Active Water. My goal in doing this is to raise $10,000 for their clean water projects in Africa. And I figured since I was going across the country, I might as well hit as many HWers on my way as I can. Which way am I going? I'm still working on that. I'll most likely be taking a southern route from Gainsville, FL to San Diego, CA running along the bottom of the South and South-Western states. From San Diego, I'd probably turn north and head to LA where some friends-of-the-family are doing ministry. However, the one I'd like to do but figure I shouldn't because of terrain and weather would take me from Yorktown, VA across the middle of the country and end in San Francisco (I'd deviate from that route and head south to LA instead). But that's all still up in the air. But either way, I wanted to get as many HWers involved in this as I possibly can since otherwise I won't be in very much internet contact with yall. So here's 4 major ways in which you can help:
  1. Prayer:
I need lots and lots of prayer for this thing. Prayers for planning, for safety, for provision, and of course for my poor little feet who are going to be taking quite the beating. I need people who are willing to commit to pray often for this. The only way I'll be able to pull this thing off is if God makes it happen and I want as many people as I possibly can get to be praying for Him to do just that.
  2. Support:
Like I said, I'd like to raise as much money for clean water projects in Africa as I can with this thing, which is why I set my goal at $10,000.00 Which means I'm gonna need a lot of people to give. Now I know most of our active HWers are young and jobless or otherwise broke/poor, so I'm not expecting the $10,000 to come from yall. But those of you who can give, are more than welcome to. Rather, I need yall's help spreading the word about this project with people you know who can give.

But beyond the fundraising part of the project, I'm gonna need somewhere between $3,000-$4,000 in order to pull this thing off. So in reality, I'm raising close to $13,000 in total.

I also need gear. A lot of my sleeping will be camping out off the road where no-one can see me (yes, this is legal when done properly) combined with couch-surfing. And I have 0 camping experience and just as much equipment. I haven't even begun yet to get a complete list of all that I need, but I know a tent is gonna be a biggie. So if yall know anyone who has stuff like that they'd be willing to give, hit them up. People in the south-western TN area would be preferable since that's where I am shipping stuff is stupid expensive nowadays.

And again, I need lots of people to be praying that God would get me what I need when I need it. Point anyone who might be interested in supporting the $10,000 clean water goal to this fundraising page where they can give directly online should they choose. Admittedly, the description is insufficient, but I'm still working on that, so hold off a bit before pointing anyone to it.
  3. Planning:
I'm needing to put together a team of as many people as I can find who'll help me with researching and planning all of the various angles of this trip. Everything from camping advice, to route planning, to nutritional research, to weather mapping. The bulk of this will all be done over the next several months leading up to my walk, but I will also need a core group of people who'll keep in touch with me during the walk to scout out things like where I'll be spending the night, and weather (I'll probably let my mom head up that department, but I'll still need people). I also need financial advice for the best way to handle the funds I'll be raising and receiving. The funds for Active Water should be easy since you can give directly there, but the funds for the walk itself will take a little more thoughtful management and planning so I'll need help with that.

There's a lot of work, and researching, and planning that will have to go into getting this thing off the ground and I can't do it by myself so any of you who'd like to help with it in any way be sure to let me know. I would be super grateful.
  4. Partner:
As unlikely as it is, my ideal situation would be to find at least one other person to join me on my walk. It'll be slightly safer that way and I'm a social-ish creature and 6-7 months of walking is a whole lot of solitude. Now like I said, it's roughly 6-7 months at best, long hours out in the hot sun with no guarantee of where you'll be sleeping, and it costs about $3,000 to do it at best. I'm going off an estimate of $1 per mile so the longer the route, the more it'll cost. Very few people can afford to give up that kind of time and money for any cause regardless of how noble it is. But. Jesus said "ask and ye shall receive" so I'm asking both Him and yall. If any of you know anyone who'd be interested in this, please, please, please let me know. And of course the offer extends doubly to HWers, but I'm just well aware that most of yall are minors and there's no way your parents would let ya do it. But if you're interested, seriously pray about it and talk it over with trusted adults (I myself spent a month praying about it with friends before I told my parents about it and made the commitment), and let me know.

And it doesn't even have to be the whole way. If I could get a handful of people that just walk a day or even just a couple of hours with me along the way it would make the experience that much richer.

So that's it. My real life sort-of quest that I hope to undertake next summer. Like I said and will continue to say, please be praying for this. It is a monumental undertaking and the only way I'll be able to do it is with God's help and lot's of prayer. Sorry for the monster post, but I kept it as short as I could.

I just have to note, that the first time Seereth told me about this, it was smack bang in the middle of the April Fool's day goings on around HW, and it took him forever to convince me he was serious.

I'm cheering you on with this, Jordan! :D I've had confirmation through a message at church that this is what God has in mind for you to do, and I'll be praying as you prepare and as you make this quest a reality. :)

The idea had just come to me about 30 minutes before and I was so hyped up that I didn't even think about the fact that it was April Fool's!

Appreciate all the prayers. But I need brains too! Right now the plans are kinda stalling because I've got a few different things bouncing around in my head and I need other heads to bounce them off of before I can really start moving them forward. The prayers are just as important, but at the moment the need for planning help is definitely a little more felt than the need for prayers.

Seer! I am bursting with excitement for you! This is so awesome! I'll be praying for you. Is there a way you can keep us updated (like a blog or newsletter) when you start on this or as you plan and prepare for this? If I didn't live halfway across the world, I'd join you. :D

Yeah, I need to work on getting a blog together for this, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I kinda figure it'd be best to wait till I actually have something a little more concrete to tell people about my plans before I start a blog or anything.

And I have a friend who wants to spend next summer walking with me!!!! :dieshappy: :dieshappy: :dieshappy: He'll have to drop out at the end of July to get back to Memphis to start college (at my very own Mid-South Christian College, no less :D), but that means the first couple of months of the walks I'll have a partner, Lord-willing. Please be praying for him as well, his name is David. The prayers are working! Keep 'em coming! :D

I'll be praying, Jordan.

AND! Check this out. I live in Tucson, and we have a spare bedroom. I talked to my parents and they're cool with you staying over at some point. If we're not too far off your route, that is. :)

Ok. After much thought and prayer, I think I have a tentative route. Sadly there's been no writing on the wall or other clear-cut "signs" that it's the best choice, but it's the choice I've made so we'll just have to trust God to handle the rest.

I have to admit it was a hard call. I was torn between a route that I knew would put certain people in my path that I would like to meet and a route that would put more family members and thus places to rest in my path. But I couldn't do both at the same time so I had to make the call. And so it is with a little bit of exhaustion that I proudly share my route with you.

http://goo.gl/maps/C035D *thinks the link should work*

It will probably change quite a bit before it's all said and done, but it gives you a basic idea of where abouts I'll be. Basically, from the VA coast to the Los Angeles, CA coast. So if you're anywhere close to that route, let me know. I would love to meet ya if God works it out.

Thanks! That's very kind, but sadly as my route now stands, I'm gonna be a bit too far north to take you up on that offer. But if something changes, and I wind up passing your way, I'll definitely let ya know.

Ok. I don't completely trust that the link will work for long, so I'm posting a link to a screen-cap, just in case.
