OK. If any of you know me, you probably know me from my big Ska'Lah'Seh project that I've been working on off and on for about two years now. But if you didn't know from maybe one or two of my more obscure postings, I LOVE SUPERHEROES! Particularly Superman, Batman, Captain America, Static, and I even nerd out a little over Aqua-man. Well I've decided I'm going to work on a superhero book or comic book about a superhero I've had mulling in the back of my head for the last year or so. Now to the topic at hand.

The superhero I'm working on is called Wyldhunt. He is roughly based on Celtic myth, and when I mean roughly, I MEAN ROUGHLY. Well, Wyldhunt is part Fairy, or a quarter Elf to be exact. He has been chosen by the Seelie Court to act as one of their representatives in the great hunt, a competition held between the Seelie and Unseelie every hundred or so years to decide the fate of mankind.

You see, the Fairy act as guardians of nature, or rather act as part of nature, and are not fond of humans, who aren't usually very considerate of the earth. In this story God commanded the Fairy to live in peace with mankind. So Oberon, the king of the fairy, obeyed and issued the decree that all fairy should live in peace with man and took it upon himself to enforce this order. However Titania, the queen of the fairy, and her followers did not wish to obey this decree, seeing humans as insects that should be squashed. Whether by being enslaved or destroyed by their betters, it didn't matter. So Oberon and his followers became the Seelie and Titania and her followers the Unseelie. In order to keep the two forces from destroying all the life on earth the fairy came up with the great hunt. A series of challenges that halfbreed representatives would participate in to decide the fate of mankind for the next hundred years.

I was thinking of having all manner of fairies in the story; everything from elves, to pixies, to leprechauns, to trolls. I was just wondering if any of you could come up with any interesting fairy I could introduce into the story.

Come up with an interesting fairy, as in, other types of fairies or ones that are specifically unique? If type, you could have faeries and nymphs. *likes nymphs* If a unique fairy, I've no idea. o.O

*is the proud owner of three different encyclopedias of the different types of fairies (both types and individuals)*
The main premise thus far seems fairly Celtic in theme, so I'm assuming you're wanting fairies from the British Isles and not just any old fairies from around the world. Is that right?

One of my personal favorites are the Hyter Sprites, from East Anglia in England. They are generally considered benevolent towards humans and what I love about them most is that they are said to turn into birds (specifically sand martins).

Then of course, you have the Banshees, the Kelpies *loves kelpies*, and Selkies *also loves Selkies*. Then you have some less famous ones like the Blue Men of the Minch, the cu si, and the Brown Man/men of the Muirs. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! :dieshappy: If you haven't guessed yet, this is one of my favorite realms of geekery! :D

Mimetes the Seer, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship... And wow, I always thought Banshee were a type of ghost... However after reading up a bit more they could be a cool addition to the Seelie as a sort of comforting spirit. Also on another note, while I am going for a Celtic feeling, I am going to use some non-Celtic spirits and creatures and excuse them as fairy from another land such as Japanese Yokai, Islamic Jinn and Ifrit, and other such creatures If you don't think I'm stretching it too far.

However most the Fairy featured will be of Celtic origin even though the story takes place in the southern American west. Why, if Stan Lee can have Spiderman be from Queens then Wyldhunt, who is of welsh heritage, (wanted to tap into that, as one of his big things is being an archer) can be from Texarkana. Also the more I think about it, there is such a perfect amount of both forested and urban landscape down here for a fairy themed superhero.

Also right now I am most concerned with associating the Dark Huntsman with a Fairy to be a partial breed from. The Dark Huntsmen will be female and will need to have a redeemable nature (Can't be so bad that they could not ever overcome it) and will have to be associated with a fairy of the Unseelie variety. I am not copping out with her being part dark elf.

Trust me, it is a friendship you want to develop. ;)

How do you intend to have Celtic origins feature in your fairies?

I haven't really done to much on that. It wasn't really going to be a main focus; I mostly was just using it for the Fairy and the use of the term Wyldhunt. I have thought about it though: for one his grandfather is Welsh and his grandmother is an Scottish elf. So there is that.

So the Celtic theme doesn't present itself in dress or essence, just in genealogy then?

Yeah mostly I want to steer clear of trying to make it the main focus as not to offend anyone. I hope the story will speak for itself. It contains aspects of responsibility, courage, romance, redemption, a little betrayal. You know, the usual boy meets girl, girl tries to kill boy sorta stuff.

However I do intend to pull more from Celtic mythology then anywhere else for the majority of characters. "Fairy" from other mythology are kinda just there as backdrop kinda like well they're out there sorta thing. Though creatures from Native American folklore will probably have a big presence in the story to as it is based in America.

Also with all our modern technology don't be too surprised to see a few gremlins.

I feel obligated to point out that technically "elves" are of Nordic origins, the concept migrated to the Celtic isles with the Viking invasions and with the Anglo-Saxons who had similar concepts of "aelfen" (which is where we get the word "elf"). Which is why you see the word creep up in Enlgish folklore from time to time but as far as I've read, the Celtic peoples never really held to the word "elf". Something to keep in mind if your protagonist is going to be descended from a Scottish elf.

Indeed. :D
Also, some fun non-Celtics to consider sprinkling into the backdrop are the Chinese Hsu Hsien (cunning fox spirits/fairies) and the Germanic Nickur (malevolent river fairies).

I had my suspicions on that. I was originally going to have his grandfather be a troll, but my dad said the abilities and powers I wanted to gift him with would better fit an elvish heritage. Just the same though, I think trolls are Norwegian and stuff like that too. So IDK, I have been off and on thinking pixie so he could fly but that might be a little ridiculous. Then again, his heritage might not come from any known type of fairy, as I have the elder ones. Who have existed since the creation of the earth. Oberon and Titania are listed among them, his grandmother might be among them as well.

The catch-all Celtic term for fairy is Sidhe, or Si, and I can't remember the Scottish spelling, but I think it's Sith. It's all pronounced "Shee" regardless of spelling. ;)
