I know, I know. This be a writing site, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway for any of you who want to discuss, solve and get better at that thing I'm sure most people would cringe at:

That's right! MATH.

M.A.T.H, I've heard it stands for "Mental Abuse To Humans". To some, it may be just that. o.O

Here you can post your math problems, get help, discuss what kind of math you like best, etc, etc.

E.T.C - "End of Thinking Capacity".

I'm just starting to enjoy math ever since we started a new program called Saxon. :D

Anyway, have fun! :D

Er... well, - I hope you will, anyway. o.O

God bless,

*hugs the maths* I love all of them. They are my friends and they help me when I am sad about non-math things. :D

Well, I like working on math problems with my mom. Besides that, I don't like math. A couple years ago, I tried Saxon and didn't like it. At all. It didn't explain very well, and was very dry. :P I did, however, like the Key to Decimals & Key to Percents by the "Key To" company. :D

I liked geometry and the bit of trigonometry I've done, and I'm starting to like algebra 2.

Math attempted to eat me, but I tasted so bad it spat me back out. ;) Math as a whole is my weakest point in life, methinks.

There are quite a few people who said they hate math, and it seems they haven't stayed away. ;)

Which Saxon book did you try out on? Because they all weren't written by John Saxon.

I'm on Algebra 1/2. I'll be finishing it soon, and hopefully moving on to Algebra 1. I would really like to get up to Advanced Mathematics and Chemistry. :)

Okay.

Chemistry, so far, hasn't been bad. It's mostly been measurements and shifting between units.

Yea, Saxon maths is awful, Elly. I agree!

I hate maths so much though, and I've never been able to get my head around Algebra. :P It doesn't make sense to me at all.

I think it was Saxon 6/5, the original hardback one.

I hated Saxon but liked Math a lot better once I ditched Saxon for Jacobs in Algebra and started competing in the MathCounts competition. :) Then I liked it a lot better :P

Ah, ok. That one was written by Stephen Hake, I think, not John Saxon - I think he only wrote the ones from 7/8 and up. Not completely sure though. :)

Math, I am convinced, is the bane of my life. Well, not really. If I get it, I don't mind, but it's the getting part that's hard, thus my dislike. But I'm writing now, so I'm happy. :D

I don't mind statistics at all, but I'm not sure if that qualifies.

Just wait until you get to the Mole concept. O.O You may not like measurements and units after that... o.O

I'm okay with math, but I don't like how long it takes. I tend to rush through it and make mistakes. I know the concepts, but I don't want to take the time to walk through them. One site I have found very useful is Khan Academy. It's an online "school" sort of thing... basically it's a collection of youtube videos on maaaaaannny different subjects. I do Art History and Geometry with it right now.

Here's the link: http://www.khanacademy.org/ I don't think there's anything bad on the site, but as usual, use caution when going to a new website. ;)

So I'm kind of meh with math right now... but once I get back into the groove of it soon, I think I may do better. *shrugs*

Well, I'm currently taking Calculus III (not sure what that will mean to everyone, but that's what I'd call it...).

Or if you meant like what program, Saxon, up until college.

I suppose it makes it easier if you really understand it. :) That's what I like so much about Saxon. :D I absolutely hated fractions, decimals and percents when I was doing UM, but when I did Saxon, it made it sooo much easier to understand! :D

Definition of a logarithm, taken from an online dictionary:

The exponent of the power to which a base number must be raised to equal a given number; log: 2 is the logarithm of 100 to the base 10 (2 = log 10 100).

Edit: The 10 should be subscript but I don't know how to change it. :P

I have no idea what it means, either. :P I just know how to do it because the book told me and it was fairly straightforward once I knew what I was doing.

*is glad his sister survived college math since life would be dull if the greedy math monster had eaten her, never to be seen again*

I know I did it, too, but I don't know what it means, and I don't remember how to do it anymore. XD

*shudders at the thought of being eaten by the greedy math monster* D:

....My apologies if I'm derailing the thread here. :/

Logarithms are the inverse of exponents. The base x logarithm of y is the power x should be raised to to get y. If that makes sense. It's a little easier to explain if you can write them down properly.

Another attempt to explain it: 10^2 (ten squared) is 100. The base ten logarithm of 100 is 2.

@Milly- Yay, I'm not the only person who didn't like Saxon! ;)

Ahh... I think I get it... Would the logarithm of 144 be 2 as well? :?

Well, Art Reed is a mathematician who teaches from... 7/8 Saxon, I think, all the way up to the rest of the books. :D Linky. ^_^ http://usingsaxon.com/

Well, the base 12 logarithm of 144 would be 2. The base ten logarithm would be something more more complicated. But if you take that answer and raise ten to that power, you'd get 144. Does that make sense?

Yeah, that's it.

And yeah, explaining math this way is always harder. In person, preferably with a piece of paper, it goes a lot better. Although logarithms seem to just be hard to grasp in the first place. I know it took me a long time to properly understand them, at least.

Logarithms are pretty fun. I made a sextant to use logarithms with in a class I took from semi-retired college professors who homeschooled their kids.

Yay, I got one! ^_^

I haven't had logarithms mentioned anywhere in my math, yet. It must come in in the next book. :)

In today's math lesson, I learned about permutation (e.g., 5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1). :D I am just starting to get the hang of it. ^_^

Permutation! That looks neat, I never really played around it though. :-/

Thought I posted on this thread before. o.O
I used to stink at math, and for a while there I was a couple of years behind. But then I started using this website called Khan Academy, and it really made me enjoy it. Now I'm looking around at all of my friends who hate math or are totally behind in it and I wanna help em. So feel free to PM me or whatever if you need help!

Someone mentioned Logarithms earlier on this thread? Here is link that should help: http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/logarithms

Yes. Khan Academy was essential for me to be able to understand Calculus. Good stuff there.

I find it difficult to focus on Math for a long period of time, especially when they want you to show every step of how you got your answer and it's way easier to do it in your head. My teacher didn't believe that I was factoring expressions in my head and thought that I had copied my homework answers from the back of the book.

I like expressions in fractions, because it takes concentration but it's really easy, and I enjoy factoring. My favourite part of math this year, though, was absolute value.

But I hate math tests because I don't do well on them. I think I understand, and I think I've done well, but then I haven't. This tendency seems to have transferred to my Physics class, and I hate it.

I totally think I understand the logarithms. Which is awesome.

Ugh, it would drive me crazy having to explain every step I took to answering a question! *likes to try and do most of her math in her head*
Uh-oh, how did you explain that? :/

Yes! I just learned about absolute value a couple of weeks ago, and now I love it.

:P Same. I don't do that great on math tests, probably because I know that I have to get more than 80%, and if I don't, I fail. :? But I seem to get more than 95%'s in my lessons, so I don't know what the go with me is.

*Pokes head in* Ok, I must reply here because I would be unjust if I didn't. I not only enjoy math, but I teach it. What's even more interesting (for those of you who hate this specific material) is that I teach Saxon for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. :book:

I also recommend Khan Academy which I have seen listed here as well! Such a great tool.

*Pokes back out*
