Do you have a holy ambition? Not everyone should have [the same] ambition. One plants another waters (1 Corinthians 3:6-8). Each has his own gift (1 Corinthians 7:7). Each stands or falls before his own master (Romans 14:4). But I think God would be pleased if each of his children had a holy ambition.

Some of you may be wondering: what is a holy ambition?

John Piper wrote:
“Holy ambition” means something you really want to do that God wants you to do. Something you want to do so much that doing it keeps you from doing other things that you also really like to do.

[...]

God doesn’t lead us into ambitions that are pointless—that you will regret at the end of your life. There is always a need to be met—not a need in God, but in the world—by a holy ambition. Holy ambitions are not about self-exaltation. They are always a form of love. They always meet someone’s need.

All that being said, do you have a holy ambition? Where do you sense God is leading you? What do you feel God is calling you to do (could be at the moment, could be for the rest of your life)?

I thought we could share (those who want to, that is) and then pray and encourage everyone from time to time.

*hopes she didn't scare everyone away with her seriousness* ;)

Absolutely no idea. I'm thinking either counseling, archaeology, or environmental science with lots of travel.

Partly because that's what I really, really want to do, and my name's origin and meaning.

Great idea, Idril. I honestly feel called to be a writer. Now that might have to be supplemented with another job, with my writing being more of a side endeavor, but as I consider it right now, if I could write my way through life and make a decent living, I'd be happy. Of course, God's ultimately in control, so I'll see what happens as the years start to speed by (too quickly for my liking :P ).

I'm not quite sure... I would like to counsel troubled teenagers; ones with depression problems, or suicidal thoughts. I think I could relate with them a lot, and I've been learning about depression in general, too.

But I honestly have no idea.

Oh dear. :'( :'( :'( For you of course, and not for the fact that you'd like to do that.

Rest of my life? Definitely ministry. From what it feels like right now, from what I understand and have sought after and the particular direction I have received so far is that of pastoral ministry.

I know at least that it involves preaching. And the more I do preach the more that is confirmed.

I believe that to be my primary calling.

I'm not sure these are specific enough to be called an ambition...I had something more detailed written out, but it got too long to post here.

I'd like to be remembered for charity through my future occupation (speech therapy) and perhaps to pioneer some new treatments or ways of looking at Autism and how it effects speech-language.

Beyond that, once I'm a man (those of you who wish to challenge that implication should recall that being a legal adult does not mean that you act like one) and I'm pretty firmly established in that role, I'd like to make myself available to help young men who are having trouble...from addictions to just not fitting in.

For all men have a master. But a man cannot have two masters. For he will love one and hate the other. You cannot serve God and sin. So I die to the old, as He died, and I am resurrected to the new, as He was resurrected.

Thanks for the answers, guys! Keep them coming and keep on dreaming. :)

I didn't have a holy ambition until I got into college. That's when God started opening my eyes to what I believe He wants me to do.

My holy ambition is to put up an orphanage/organization for children from all over the world. Kids have always had a special place in my heart, and when I started reading up on material about how some kids around the world don't have homes, families, don't get to experience love and care, I knew that I wanted to minister to them in some way. This (putting up an orphanage/organization) was the answer that God gave me. :)

I'm not sure really. :) One day perhaps it will become apparent to me, but at present I'm not sure.

I imagine my path will stay very much the same. I will continue to work with troubled teens, continue to minister to the hurt and the broken, and I will continue to try to speak love and truth to a world that knows neither.

Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

I think if I have one, it'd be writing. Writing has been taking up my time to the point I have to make sure I pull myself away from it to do other things. My dream is to present Truth in a different light so people will see, understand, and (God willing) even agree with it before they realize it.

Less sure of this being an actual holy ambition, but I'd love it if I were a bit less awkward in person so I could love the people around me better and be a witness for Christ.

That sounds exactly like me, from the first word to the last. I guess, in the words of Anne of Green Gables, we're "kindred spirits."

I have a heart for the lost in God's church. I have a deep desire to share the real love of God to "christians" who have gone astray, and Christians who are suffering. As Jesus brought health and wholeness to so many areas in so many people's lives when He was on earth, I want to bring His Word of life to those who have death in so much of their lives.

I don't really have a goal or plan in mind of how God wants me to achieve this. I write. I play music. I talk. I care. I pray. If God has a bigger plan for my heart's desire than I can see right now, I reckon He'll show me in His own good time. :)
