Muhaha! That's right, another one bites the... I mean turns green! What can I say? I'm a vicious, selfish troll of an ML. (Who wants to bet Jonathan Garner has started making faces right about here?) If I want someone in green, I get 'em.

And how do I select my victims? My latest recruit, Lycanis, rather worriedly asked me if I stalked people. Hardly--I'm way too busy for that! Stalking takes far too much work. Rather, I have a sort of innate ability to sense the inner moderator in people. Call it intuition, perception, Spidey sense, whatever. I just know a moderator when I see one.

Kingjon is one such person. I've been considering him as a moderator since I met him on the forums. Every time I'd see one of his posts, I'd think, "One day, when the time is right, YOU'RE MINE!"

Why him? Go read any of his posts and you'll see. Notice how thoughtful they all are; many of them are quite long and detailed. (Also note the studious grammar and spelling.) See how he expounds on relevant subjects, from world-building to publishing? See how much time and effort he puts into adding value, information, and insight to the forum?

That's what makes a moderator. Thoughtfulness. Maturity. An active involvement in writing and the forums. Those are the qualities that make someone eligible to be a moderator, and those are the qualities I see in kingjon.

Jon, I've long awaited this moment. I am thrilled and delighted that you've joined my team. I have only one piece of advice for you as you take on your new role--keep doin' what you've been doin'!

And now y'all may commence with the glitter and punch and such things. I've brought cupcakes, of course. ^_^

And now that our Commander has announced this and I no longer have to keep it "under wraps" ...

When I first joined HW, I felt some vague ambition to be an editor or even a moderator. But then as I got to know the people and the community here, that faded away, so that my chief reaction to Aubrey's invitation was reluctance and doubt at my sufficiency to the task. But she, and the lesson learned from the scene in Prince Caspian, wore me down :)

My doubt (since I've read Kipling's poem about "the female of the species") is of the description as "selfish."

Goodness, if you're not mature, Jon, what does that make me? o.O I think you're mature, so that either means you are, or that I'm extremely immature and my perception is horribly skewed. Take your pick. ;)

The carefulness with which you considered my offer to become a mod shows me that you take your responsibility seriously--and that is one of the many reasons why I promoted you. :)

HA! See? Jonathan rolled his eyes at me! I was right!

Ah ... so that's the implement of office for a moderator? (An editor's obviously being a pen, and perhaps a scepter for a ML ...)

Well, the implement for the office of a moderator varies depending on who's giving you one. My official implement is a shock cane (and occasionally a green hat), but you can (and should) make up your own. It's a good way to add a personal touch to your work. ;)
