Everyone has probably read a book with quotes at the beginning or end of each chapter. I think I want to do this, but I don't know many quotes. Can y'all help me out (and anyone else who needs quotes)? Song lyrics, famous people's quotes; you can even quote your friends and family, or yourself.

Any reasoning behind the quotes you want, or will just any do?

Just any. This isn't specifically for me; it's for other people who need them too. And so far I have 26 chapters that need quotes, so whatever quotes you have will probably work somewhere. ;)

That's one of my favorites, and the only one I can think of right now.

Ah. Someone should drag Seer or Brendan in here and have them start talking.

Hmm, I just saw it on a calendar. Google credits it to Dave Tyson Gentry, but I don't always trust Google. :P

I recommend that you purchase "Thorns Have Roses." It's a book of quotes. Very useful.

Redemption is to be purchased, to have a price paid. So I was redeemed from my master sin, and from justice, which demanded my death. For He paid the price of sin by becoming sin, and met the demands of justice by dying for us.

For all men have a master. But a man cannot have two masters. For he will love one and hate the other. You cannot serve God and sin. So I die to the old, as He died, and I am resurrected to the new, as He was resurrected.

Note: Ebed is Hebrew for bondsman, Eleutheros is Greek for unrestrained (not a slave).

 That title sounds like something I would say, without even realizing it, and then wonder why people were laughing at me.
I don't have extra money right now. And I'm not going to sit there and type out all the quotes in a book. This is just a place for people to dump any quotes they remember or come across. :)

*has found a bunch of cool quotes* :D

"Come t'e' picciol fallo amaro morso!" "What grievous pain a little fault doth give thee!"-Dante

Das Werk lobt den Meister. (German) The work proves the craftsman."-Madeleine L'engle

“To stake one's life for the truth.”-Madeleine L'engle

"“Welcome, Prince,” said Aslan. “Do you feel yourself sufficient to take up the Kingship of Narnia?”
“I - I don't think I do, Sir,” said Caspian. “I'm only a kid.”
“Good,” said Aslan. “If you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been a proof that you were not…”"-C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian

“The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places.
But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now
mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“Pay heed to the tales of old wives. It may well be that they alone keep in memory what it was once needful for the wise to know.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places.”
-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

“You shouldn't believe everything you hear. You're young, not stupid.”
-Terry Brooks, The Wishsong of Shannara

Okay, so they're mostly from books... :P Still awesome quotes though.
And here's one from a HWer we know and love. We were Skyping when he took a bite of a burnt potato, and this is what he said:

"Well, that's a new flavor..."-Solomon Soldier
 We were cracking up.

I absolutely love quotes! :dieshappy: Maybe when I have time (yeah right  ) I'll compile a book of quotes. Anyway, here are a few more I found over on Goodreads.

"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero

I think there are two rooms in our whole house with no books in them, and those are bathrooms. Not counting closets. Actually, I'm pretty sure most of the closets have books in them too.

When I've seen this device used to best effect (at least in fantasy and SF), it's usually been quotations (bits of verse, proverbs, etc.) attributed to the characters or culture portrayed in the book itself, rather than from our culture ...

Lord Tarin wrote:
“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero

I'm sorry to have to say that this quote is apocryphal, falsely attributed to Cicero (see here and here, for example).

Sorry to be spreading false information. My excuse is that I found it on another site.

In terms of quotes from books, even though this hasn't found its way into my series yet:

"It is when the darkness is most severe that the light shines out all the brighter." - Somebody to someone about something. :?

It is, like I said, apocryphal: there's no excuse needed. (I first met the quote on an Amazon.com advertising refrigerator magnet, and didn't learn that it was apocryphal until I went looking for a more specific citation years later.)

That's actually one of mine. I meant to use it in one of my earlier books and completely spaced it. That's what revising is for, right?

I LOVE books with quotable passages, LoTR being one of the best. However, I've found that they are more compelling if you let them enter the natural flow of the text instead of forcing them in just because you like the way they sound or have your heart set on adding them. Just a thought.

“Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains ... an unuprooted small corner of evil.

Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.”

And

“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”

This quote is perfect for Holy Worlds:

Christ, who said to the disciples, “You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you,” can truly say to every group of Christian friends, “You have not chosen one another, but I have chosen you for one another.” -- C. S. Lewis

‎"To accept everything is an exercise, to understand everything is a strain. The poet only desires exaltation and expansion, a world to stretch himself in. The poet only asks to get his head into the heavens. It is the logician who seeks to get the heavens into his head. And it is his head that splits." -G. K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by… (John Masefield)

Once more into the fray
Into the last good fight I'll ever know
Live and die on this day
Live and die on this day (Joe Carnahan)

“I will still, and forever, wonder how one can go boldly and follow at the same time.” (Tiberius Chase, Star Trek: The Beginning Cancelled Star Trek Series)

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell,
Rode the six hundred. (Alfred Lord Tennyson, October 24th, 1854)

“Never should numbers matter less than when talking about death, and yet never do numbers matter more.” (Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation)

“May we never find space so vast, planets so cold, heart and mind so empty that, that we cannot fill them with love and warmth.” (Doctor Tristan Adams, Star Trek: The Original Series)

“So, I’ll say bon voyage, Captain, and ‘see you out there’.” (Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation)

“If you wish to reconsider–”
“No, no. I full well expected the other shoe to drop eventually.”
“We can only hope that this will be the last footwear to fall.” (Colonel Jack O’Neill and Supreme Commander Thor, Stargate: SG-1)

"Want to know what my vision is?"
"No."
"20/10 - same as Ted Williams. He could see the seams on a fast ball coming at him."
"How 'bout knuckles?" (Special Agents Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Anthony DiNozzo, Jr., NCIS)

Too much quotes? No? Yes? *Slinks away*
