In order to not pollute another thread...

Have you ever dreamed something that later happened?
Have you ever had the same dream?
Have you ever based a story off of a dream?
Add questions as needed. :D

I've had three dreams I actually remembered, that made some vague semblance of sense, and that didn't scare me to death. The first one had something to do with an honorable pirate, I didn't write it down, although I wanted to write a novel about it (I am very, very glad I didn't,) and now I can only remember some really, really, really vague parts. The second one was the basis for my fourth fantasy novel the Last Wizard and has little or nothing to do with the dream, which I can also barely remember now. The third one I actually wrote down while I was still mostly asleep, and became my short story The Isle of Dreams. It's the closest to my original dream. :D I wish I had dreams like that more often!

Usually though, I either don't dream, or I have nightmares, usually about being killed.

So there, I talked. Your turn. ;)

Is it coincidence that 'The Isle of Dreams' was a dream? :D

Nope. I dreamed the same dream twice in the same night. Seriously. That's how the ending came about... with the dream starting over. :D I couldn't remember it all, unfortunately.

I've only had like three dreams I've ever remembered fully. And I've only had one, really, really, good dream that I've ever written down. But it's not story material. I did get a few plot twists from thinking late at night...but maybe I was so tired and half-asleep that they were dreams anyways. :D

Uh, yes (uncannily so!)
Yes! Often.
No, I don't think so.

Well, I have dreamed about things, and they have happened later on. And I have never seen the people or places before. Any ideas on that? God is the only one who can give us dreams of things in the future...

I had this dream about scientists, dinosaurs, and my house. Repeatedly, like about once every 2 or 3 years. And no, I have not seen Jurassic Park. I could change the dream in the middle of it. I would think something like, "I don't like this, I'm going to change it", change it (in the dinosaur dream by lecturing the dinosaurs on getting along -the scientists had disappeared), and proceeding. Or then I would have dreams about things attacking me. And jerk awake. Once I dreamed I was an adventures In Odyssey character, and it was such a sad episode, that I woke up crying.

Sometimes I have thought up stories when I was half asleep, but I don't think I've based a dream, off of one (One time my mom said I was saying "Jay" in my sleep, which was an MC in a story I was writing at the time).

Anyways, that is quite a long explanation... :D

Have you ever dreamed something that later happened?

No, not really. The closest I've gotten to dreaming a future event was one night when I dreamed that we kept delaying to leave for our enrichment classes and didn't leave until 12:30pm (classes end at 1:00pm). Something about me wanting to change into a dress (which is weird because I hate wearing dresses) and my sisters forgetting things. Then, that morning after about a minute on the road driving to our classes, one of my sisters announced that she had forgotten her shoes, so we went back to the house. That was scary... :D

Have you ever had the same dream?

Oh yes. I used to have this dream that I discovered a secret top floor of our church and our pastor got really mad at me. I also used to have a dream that the Rumor Weed (Veggie Tales, anyone?) grew through our porch. Oh, and there was another vague dream about potatoes, but I really can't remember what it was about. The coolest repeating dream that I had was that I was swimming through a familiar place that had been flooded, and there were two people with me that I had never met but was familiar with. We found this electronic panel thingy and had to figure out how to drain the area of water. Too much time playing Myst, I guess. :D

Have you ever based a story off of a dream?

Nope, but that would be cool. :D

May I add a question? What was the craziest dream you've ever had?

Have you ever had the same dream?

Yes. I had several dreams where I was in a used bookstore and found lots of good books for really cheap, but then before I could buy them they all disappeared. :(

What was the craziest dream you've ever had?

Hmm... I've had lots of them. The craziest dream I had recently was where I was attacked by a fifteen foot long arboreal blue python. It tried to drop out of a tree onto me, and then I shot at it with a shotgun. :D

No, not really,

Have you ever had the same dream?

Have you ever based a story off of a dream?

I had a dream last night where I had this entire list of different volumes and types of screaming (as in, screaming at people) along with ratings on how good it felt to use each type of scream in different situations. It was very detailed. Then I was in a zoo of some sort where there was a lego kiosk, and then I was in this giant parking lot with a gazillion port-a-potties. These are the kinds of dreams I have daily, guys. No wonder I'm slightly bonkers.
And yes, though it seems insane that I could make any sense out of my dreams, I have used my dreams for stories, though just for scenes rather than actual plotlines.
As for the scariest dreams, I don't have many truly bad dreams, but what has to be the scariest for me is that some murderer is advancing on me but my voice won't work so I can't scream for help. And then the scariest dream situation was when I was camping in Canada, and had this weird sorta-dream that my friend was in trouble at the visitors center, and when I woke up I went out of my tent to go try and find her. It was absolutely terrifying, and I still get chills when I think about what could've happened, because I was right by a road in a completely deserted place. It was probably my biggest God moment, too.
But I hardly ever have nightmares. And usually, by nightmares have some element that makes them completely nonsensical, like one when I was getting kidnapped, but then the kidnappers turned into muppets. Not remotely scary.
No wonder I'm bonkers.

I haven't ever had the same dream but I have dreamed about the same person. Never met him. In the second dream I got him to tell me his name; it was Myles. After the third time, I mentioned to my mom that I kept dreaming about the same person, (even though they were different dreams) and I never dreamed about him again. :(

My scariest dream ever was when I was caught trespassing and sentenced to death and when I tried to tell my dad about it he was talking to a friend of our and the friend thought I was interrupting because I wanted them to quit talking so we could eat. So he kept putting me off until I lost my composure and started crying because I was, after all, going to die in a few hours and lunch was the last thing on my mind. And that's where I woke up, to my great relief.

Have you ever had dreams where you actually experience emotions that feel real? Even if the dream doesn't? And it's things that I've never felt before, like when I knew I was going to die. I've never been in that situation, I don't know what it's really like to know that this day is your last, but in that dream I did. I can still, if I think hard, I can remember it. And I had another one where I had a baby and my mom thought my sister should raise it (I can't remember why) and I felt really, really possessive about that baby, it was mine, but I've never had a baby, so how would I know?

Dreams are really strange things.

That sounds surprisingly like a dream my brother would have! He really loves books, and they're so hard to get here. :)

Muppet kidnappers, huh? That's...odd.

I hardly remember any of my dreams, unfortunately.

Maybe I showed it to you...

Ooh, I just got a great story idea where kids can interact with each other in their dreams. *copyrights idea* :D

Once, my cousin told me that he had had a nightmare that the White Witch was chasing him through her ice castle. I had the same dream a couple weeks later. Creepy.

I'd like to see that dream turned into a story, Celearas. :D I like the screaming part, even though I'm not much of a screamer. (My best attempt at a girly scream sounds something like a dying piglet.) My nine year old sister is quite talented at it, though. :D

Haha, that totally needs to go in the "You know you're a crazy fantasy writer when..." thread.

Actually, I don't scream much either. Except on roller coasters, but those are mainly "Ahhh! This is so much fun!" screams. But I always have dreams that have nothing to do with my intrests in real life, so it's not that weird.

Sadly, I don't dream all that often... and I never remember my dreams when I do. Once time a few months ago I had a dream that would have made a cool story, but I didn't think to write it down and now I don't remember what it was.
Usually they aren't story-worthy dreams anyway... they're usually about people I know, but everyone is completely out of character.

Oh... well come to think of it I remember one dream... something about me being pregnant, but not remembering what had happened. Just knew how long ago it had been, and freaking out. And it was way more obvious in my dream than it would have been for real. Very creepy O.o

I did have one or two dreams more than once when I was younger, and I remember part of those, but that's about it.

I've never dreamed about something that later happened. Although when my grandma died, I was playing through a random scenario about Dad coming home from the hospital (he had gone to visit her with my cousin) and saying she had died, then a couple hours later it happened exactly like I had imagined it. So much for telling myself I was crazy and it wouldn't happen, huh? :P

Have you ever dreamed something that later happened?

Yes. Often enough to be actually scary. Tell you why in a moment. ;)

Have you ever had the same dream?

When I was little I know I dreamed over and over again the same dream (or many similar ones) where semi-trucks were attacking the house. (this was when I was like, 4) More recently, I've only had two extremely creepy dreams that were the same. Again, I'll tell you why they were creepy in a moment. ;) Even more recently than that, perhaps a year ago, I had probably five (I didn't count) dreams about the same young man that looked kinda like Jason from AIO. But not quite. It was... odd. (though odder is that I'm talking about my dreams, I usually don't. :) )

Have you ever based a story off of a dream?

No. Most of the time I can't remember them well enough. Not too long ago, I had a very neat dream, but after I woke up, it was hazy, and now I can just get the impression that it was about some young man. Someday I wan to base a story off a dream, it sounds really neat. I just have to figure out how to remember all my neat dreams! :D

What's the craziest dream you've ever had?

The craziest dream I ever had was one I had twice, a few years apart. It was a slightly unrealistic version of our house getting blown away by a tornado. Except, it wasn't our house, I'd never seen it before. Which is why it was the one dream I remember--I might have even written it down. But then, I had it again. After we moved to a new house. And the new house was exactly the same as the house in the dream. It was creepy. :P Not just because I'd dreamed about something I'd never seen, but because I'd also had dreams that had come true--little fragmented dreams that'd make no sense, and then a week, month, or many months later, the scene would play out exactly as I'd dreamed it. Creepy, no? :D

I've never had a nightmare, though I've had dreams that should have been nightmares--in one, I was present to an 'honor' killing, in another, I was running for my life in a war, and a friend/relative of mine was shot down as we dodged around cannons. In yet another, I was running from home, but I don't remember why, only that my older brother was also with me and I had a feeling of being chased.

Maybe. :D Except I have no idea what the kid looked like anymore.

Oops! I never answered the questions!

Have you ever dreamed something that later happened?

Yes, but I knew it was going to happen and it wasn't how it happened.

Have you ever had the same dream?

Umm... I think so, I dreamed a couple of times that I was Edmund in 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'.

Have you ever based a story off of a dream?

No, but I could use a little inspiration right now.

What's the craziest dream you've ever had?

That is unable to be answered. All my dreams are about the same.

Okay, scary, but I have dreamed things before (all insignificant things) and they happened. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It was really weird.

My craziest dream was a "version" of a Bible story. Jesus had just preached on a hill and he and his disciples got in a rickety old boat and rowed out onto a lake. Then a bunch of people followed on inner-tubes, floaties, noodles and the like. What made it even weirder was that the people were cartoonish but the background was real. I wonder if that kind of dream is considered sacrilegious.

Yes!!! Unfortunately I live in Mo. and you live in Ga. So here is my proposition... Whenever I am a published Author I am going to pay off all my baby brother's medical bills (that's a lot!) and then I am going to make a trip out to see you. Georgia’s beautiful anyway, so I’ll make a vacation out of it. Sound like a deal?

Yeah! Or if that doesn't work, we'll see each other (and Jesus!) someday. Wouldn't it be weird if we dreamed about each other? (I fear we are constantly derailing threads. Perhaps we should PM discussions? ;))

We should just start our own thread! Off Topic Remarks, the conversations of Airianna and Shawn!

True. I was kidding anyway. We should probably just PM before the Topic Control Police come down upon us. We have been very off topic tonight. :?

Oh, just pretend the conversation was a dream. Then, not only will it be on topic, you can keep talking about it. :D

Excuse me, ladies *flashes home-made "Topic Control Police" badge*, but please get back on topic or I will have to ask you to vacate the premise. Thank you.

(Just kidding about the vacating part. :D)

Oh, and I hereby dub thee the Tangential Sisters. *taps Shawn and Airianna each on the shoulder with a sword*

Ok, back to the dreams. :D Here's another question to add to the list: What was your worst nightmare?

*rubs shoulder* Ouch. Hmm... not a bad idea, Janin. :D Oh, and I was responding to the "I've never had a nightmare" comment by Amanda.

I am starting to fear the little blue people with green font and swords... :)

*THIS IS A FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION* Tangential Sisters… that could work, Shawn, we’ll continue our PM discussion with this as one of our topics. *THIS IS A FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION*
Back on subject: Okay, my worst nightmare was very fantasyish, but I remember it being so bad that I blocked it out, so now I can’t remember what it was exactly, so I can’t send shivers down your backs. Just believe me when I say, it was bad!

Okay, the brain is a very powerful thing (stay with me guys; I'm not going to go too scientific here, even though I could). The Lord created the brain to shut down after a certain point if we become overwhelmed because of the affect this has on our heart and other organs.

Example of this, my mom had a horrific Go-cart accident when she was 12. The only thing she can remember are the paramedics leaning over her telling her she was going to be okay, they were going to get her help. The next four hospital days are a complete blank. She can’t remember what happened. She also can’t remember how the accident occurred either. She just has the one snippet of information left.

Now, when she was at her uncle’s house her step dad began to recount the accident to his brother. Her heart began to pound and all those images he was describing came back to her, flooding her mind with the terror and horror she experienced. As a coping mechanism the brain immediately shut down. My mom went crying from the room and five minutes later she couldn’t remember what he (her step dad) had said. She knew he had been talking about the accident, but could not remember his description of it.

My nightmare wasn’t that bad, obviously, but my brain has just allowed me to forget it, or block it out, so that I can’t bring it back to my memory. Now, there are certain things the brain doesn’t block out, based on many chemical technicalities which I’m not qualified to go into, which is why lots of people can remember what they saw when a murder occurs. The brain is selective, sorting out what can and cannot be blocked. The brain knows subconsciously that that information (the murder) may be needed at some point, so it doesn’t block it. Is that not amazing? God is so cool!

I think a new story idea is coming to me...

That's cool, Airianna! (or not...)

Not sure. About a girl who can't remember something horrible, (like Airianna's mom) but gets tangled in a web surrounding the events. She's the only one who possesses the knowledge of what actually happened (which has somehow, years later, become terribly important) but she can't remember it because her mind is blocking out because whatever happened is too horrible to remember...

And of course there will be a young man too who may or may not be a romantic interest and is probably the person primarily investigating the incident... except all this sounds just a little bit like the Third Earth. :D So I don't know if it's actually a story idea or not.

Hmm... It sounds pretty similar to something I have read but you could make it unique. (The beauty of rewriting! ;))

Haha! It all depends on separating it in my mind from the story I already wrote... (At the moment the plots are the same; the worlds and setting are different. *sigh*) I'm not writing the same story twice.

(The existing story is about a girl who barely remembers her childhood. She was kidnapped and two world governments are fighting over her, and an unusual young man steals her from both of them and races to find out who she is first, to try and save her. the girl herself holds the key, but she doesn't know it and her friend can't access it...)

*pouts* Please *blinks eyes innocently* It would go to a good cause (namely Samuel's medical bills, that’s what my profits are going to go towards, oh, and a trip to GA *wink wink*).

I'm teasing ;) I think it is an interesting plotline though. I think lots of people get ideas for stories from things they dream. If you guys are anything like me you go to bed some nights (after working madly over your story all night) and try to dream out the next scene that you just can’t get right!

Umm, no, but my brother told me that he woke up from a dream right before he was going to be eaten by a dinosaur (he was a little kid back then. Or rooms were right across from one another so he ran into my room, pounced on my sleeping self, and poured out his terrors). Does that count?

Oh yeah, happens all the time. Then you try not to wake up because you want to know what happens but by the time you do actually wake up you have no idea what you were dreaming...

Unless of course it was a really, really scary dream and you actually wake yourself up before you find out what happens. That's really odd, when that happens, because you're asleep, but you know you're fighting for something (outside of the dream) but you don't know what because you're asleep and then you'[re half asleep and suddenly you're awake-- *shivers* I used to have really, really bad nightmares. Once I was awake they would fade away into oblivion like most of my dreams, but I can still remember being asleep and being aware of fighting to wake up.

Goes back to the chemicals of the brain! You're brain forces you to wake up sometimes! I mean, how many books have you read where someone wakes up because they hear a soft noise or think someone is watching them? I don’t read those books, but I know they’re out there. It’s the chemicals in the brain!
Maybe your nightmares came from your torture obsession. ;)

I second the good cause! *wink wink* I also agree about the torture obsession ! ;)

My sister walks in her sleep sometimes. Once I went over to her, and she opened her eyes, hugged me, and rolled over. And had no idea the next morning. I've been known to murmur characters' names in my sleep. (Jay... Jay... ;))
