I was going through the many pages of Unanswered posts, and I noticed that locked and archived threads that have never been answered are all still there.

It would really clean things up if the Unanswered Posts just showed threads that were active and could be answered, and didn't also bring up all the old archived ones that have never been replied to. I don't know if that would be at all possible?

I've wondered about this, too. This is just an uninformed idea, but what if they would "announce" that it's going to be a locked thread via a reply to it, thereby getting it out of the "unanswered posts" category?

And it's a shame if we're having topics so old they're being archived, yet in their lifetime they were never replied to.

Well, I think most of those are topics that were for informational purposes only, but if any of them weren't, then that is sad.

Now that is a thought.... I admit I find the archived posts a bit annoying when they show up as new posts.
