Yup, that's what I meant by Charismatic. :) Not sure if it's the most correct usage or not though...

Yup. We've got a full band as well, and a small orchestra on special occasions.

Yeah we just have a very talented guy a little older than I am that plays piano or guitar and leads us in singing right now, but awhile ago we had an acoustic, bass, and electric guitars, keyboard (because we met where there was no piano at the time) and a little drum (or a set of drums)...it'd be really cool to sometimes have an orchestra! :D

Is sovereign grace a denomination?

Lots of conservative churches use instruments.

Our church is non-denominational but my family are leaning towards Presbyterian.

I get mixed up with all these names of different groups, I am not sure I know what half of them are. :) We probably, I think lean more towards the beliefs of the Evangelical, or Pentecostal (maybe they're the same thing :?). If people ask I usually say I'm a follower of Christ. :) We're all part of the church of God, aren't we; and in the end we are the church. ^_^ *Makes me very happy to think that*

We attend an Independent Fundamental Baptist church. We just have piano and sometimes bass. They only sing hymns. I wish they did more contemporary music.

I like the old hymns, but I think it's great to sing new ones as well. I always like learning a new song.

Perhaps "traditional" would capture the meaning better than "conservative"? Hymns & organ? *shrug*

I would agree there. Traditional is a better word for this than conservative. :D

It's good to have balance, I think. All our church does is mainly contemporary music, and sometimes I wish we could do some older songs. :P It's hard to suggest things like that in these kinds of situations though, because often you don't really have that much of a voice to say anything...

Do you have an official worship/music director? You might try approaching them about it. For example, there's lots of videos on youtube of hymns done in a more contemporary-band-friendly way; perhaps you could email them some links...

Anyway, I'm also a big fan of balance between traditional and contemporary, of music, and of worship in general. I've been to a few churches that do it really well, imo. :)

Yeah that's what's nice about a small church...we can request songs, and there's a chance they will do them (if they deem them theologically sound). We also have a good balance of contemporary and traditional, which I also enjoy. :D

Yes, the official music director is actually my cousin, but she is big on CCM, so it's a bit hard to approach her about older stuff. :P

I'm Presbyterian (PCA). :D

We have a perfect mix of CCM and traditional music in my church, at least in my opinion. We do live up to our reputation of having no rhythm, though... ;)

We go to a baptist church right now, although it's really charismatic, but we like it :D

Yes, it's a fairly new one though. It was started by C.J Mahaney and it is awesome! It's very Gospel centered and Spirit led; we went to one in Langley, BC, and loved it! I would say it's the ideal church.

PS: Mennonites, we'll leave you to your faspa and matishlope! Sorry...couldn't resist that one, my dad used to pastor two Mennonite churches.

Okay, thanks Josiah! :dieshappy: 'Cause I was like my whole church believes in God's sovereign grace... but we have a variety of beliefs. I would like to visit a Sovereign grace some time! :D

*grins at Josiah* Actually, we only have faspa when we have a potluck at church, because then we had a big meal at noon, so we have a small supper.
As for matishlope... I don't know what you mean, and I looked it up but Google told me it 'didn't match any keywords'. :?
But we eat Portzelky at New Years, Pfeffernüsse for Christmas and Roll Kuchen with watermelon during the summer. As well as a few other dishes, I suppose. Eating is a big component to fellowship, if you ask me. Why do you think we have food in intro threads? ;)

Our church has a really nice mix of CCM and old hymns as well, depending on which group is leading worship.

I have no idea how to spell it, it basically means Sunday afternoon nap, though I think...Never heard of portzelky or pfeffernüsse, but I have had roll kuchen with watermelon before. That's the sugary fried dough stuff right?

Basically. We don't put sugar on our Roll Kuchen. Portzelky is a different fried dough, with raisins, and we roll that in sugar. Pfeffernüsse are peppernuts -coin-sized hard cookies.

So every single person who has replied here is Protestant. Interesting. I kind of expected that, but was hoping this board would have attracted at least one Roman Catholic (an Orthodox Christian is too much to hope for, as they are so few). For my part, I am not strictly a member of any church, but am an inquirer at an Orthodox Church in America parish.

BTW, what does "Luthadox" mean? I'm trying to imagine being "half Orthodox" and I can't.

Ooh. Cool. I like my Episcopal friends.

I'm Presbyterian, which is sadly lacking from your poll.

I mention that in my four-thousand-word blog post that's coming up.

I have loads of friends who are Eastern Orthodox or inquiring into Eastern Orthodoxy Sam.

Hear hear! Heartily! If only all Christians remembered that, we'd all be a lot better off...

Or we could just stop thinking about 'denominations' and focus on seeking truth together. Then we wouldn't have to worry about whether all our views mesh nicely together into a neat little denominational box, or whether we're of the same denominational persuasion. Just Christ and love and truth.

Mhmmm. That makes me really, really happy.

Sometimes I write stuff because I need to remind myself of it.

Dirty dirty Brendan. "Thou shalt not lie..."

Lady Nicole - Awesome stuff.

Lady Felis - all Presbyterians are reformed. The definition of Presbyterians is "The reformed Christians of Scotland."

That is what I was trying to convey through irony. (:

Fascinating thread. It's interesting to hear all the different perspectives, even if I don't agree with them all.

We're Reformed and we go to a URC (United Reformed Church) church. AWESOME!!!!!!

I think the main thing that unites us is truth, not denomination, as has already been mentioned. The problem is that we can't even agree on what Truth is, thus the many denominational flavors across the spectrum. It's also important to stress that Truth is according to the Bible, not man. Of course, being flawed, we'll always mess something up, so in a sense there's not a "perfect" denomination, just ones that are more closely aligned to the Truth as revealed in scripture. And of course, as you grow in your understanding of the faith, and mature in your Christian life, you might find yourself leaning to a camp you'd never considered being a part of before.

I could go on and on, because this is an important topic. After all, we're hanging our eternal destination on this, right? But I shan't since it's late and I don't want to arouse anything.

But here's hoping you all become Reformed. ;)
