I've implemented a new avatar uploading system. For details please see the announcement. This thread is for any questions you might have about it. Thanks!

Vanya, your link in the avatar announcement was broken, I have fixed it at the bottom 'here' to take you to this thread; I hope that was what you wanted. :)

And thank you so much for putting this in place! Awesome, and just what was needed!

Oh, thanks for the fix.

Like I told the MLs, it can't hurt to try. Worst case scenerio it doesn't work... and we already have that. :D

I'd like to add that you can still PM the main avatar makers, since we all have the power to upload. (Right?)

Actually, uploading methods changed recently. You can't upload through Git anymore, you have to use FTP. Jay or Hannah can give instructions on that, I can't find the password at the moment. :P

Oh, I wasn't aware of this. ftp is simple, I can do that, if git is broken.

It's not that Git is broken, it's that I added the avatar directory to .gitignore so that people could use the (far simpler) FTP method to upload avatars. :)

(Though, I suppose that does mean the Git can't upload avatars anymore, either...)

Aaah, so we still use git for the rest. Brilliant.

Can the FTP info be added to the Google Group then?

I updated the original post of the announcement to include the avatar rules to avoid confusion and misunderstandings. If you think an avatar violates the forum rules please bring it up with a member of the forum team who will take appropriate action. Any questions about the avatar rules can certainly be discussed here. I'm trying to cut down on posting on the main thread, and I really should have thought of this before I launched the system.

I have a couple questions.

1. What size does the avatar image need to be?

2. Does anyone know how to re-size an image without losing pixel integrity (I keep trying and it always gets really blurry)

Thanks

The sizing is 145x145. What programs do you have to resize?

What is the size of the image you're trying to resize? Is it bigger than 145x145?

Yes, it's actually a good deal bigger. And it's measured in inches, not pixels. If you want, I can post it on here as-is so you can see it.

Hm... your problem might be that many of the elements of the image are blurry, like they were very small images to start with. Nonetheless, at 145x131, it looks fine to me. (Resized in Photoshop CS5) * shrug * See attached for what I got.

Hello... I have a question... :P
This is so weird and nobody seems to be doing it...
I was wondering if it is okay to DRAW your avatar???
If so... that would be awesome... but if not... it's okay.
please tell me... someone!

That is fine. We've had a few drawn avatars on here, they're just not real common. As long as it fits within our guidelines (no people) you're more than welcome to do so. :D
