In my world there is no magic. But there are "magicians".
They aren't really magical, they are alchemists and scientists, but for hundreds of years the people have regarded them as magical. So they keep up the illusion. Most of there technology they use for their "magic" they have gotten from the dwarves who are also considered magical because their technology is so far advanced from the medieval living humans.
So that's magic in my world. Any thoughts? Questions?

(Also the audience doesn't become aware that there is no magic till act 2 of the story.)

So, do the people still think they are magicians or do they know they're not, but just call them magicians still? :)

The magicians still keep up the illusion. Even the king has a court magician.

I don't think I explained myself very well. Ok, so the magicians keep up the illusion but do people who aren't magicians know that the magicians are pretenders or are they duped by the pretence?

Yes, pretty much all the humans think that magicians are magical.

What are the relations between magicians and dwarves? Did the magicians steal the scientific knowledge from the dwarves, or did the dwarves willing teach them? What steps do the magicians (and/or dwarves) take to make sure that the populace doesn't find out about the scheme?

What technology level are most humans at (compare it to a time in Earth's history)? What technology level are the dwarves at?

During the massive war that finally united the humans under one rule. A human of some importance fled to the dwarf kingdom escaping from his enemy's. The dwarves do not kill strangers who trespass on there land but do not let them leave either. He lived with the dwarves for years and learned much of there technology. He finally escaped from the dwarves and returned to his homeland and started a secret society of "magicians."

The humans are about the same level as Medieval 1100's And the dwarves are in there industrial revolution. maybe 1870's.

Smart dwarves. Would they send men out to find and recapture anyone who was able to escape?

Due to the nature of the dwarf cities (and the situation of there land.) it would be almost impossible for someone to escape. The one man escaping was a one time thing.

They did not send anyone out to find him once he left there domain because the dwarf nation does not want to deal any with other nations.

I've not gotten that far but I'm thinking there will be some things you wouldn't find in the real world.

Woo! Steampunk! Is the dwarves' tech going with the steampunk look-and-feel? I need a smiley which is bouncing up and down.
