When I was a kid, I used to love a movie called The Man from Snowy River, and today I found out that it was actually based on a poem by an Australian poet named Banjo Patterson. I found an online version of it and read it to see what it was like. I was thoroughly impressed, it's a really good story. I'm not the biggest fan of poetry (even though I write it), but this poem was actually pretty good and I would definitely recommend it to yall. Now it's your turn, what's your favorite narrative poem?
In Christ,
Jordan

The Man From Snowy River is one of my favorite movies! I was rather surprised to find that it was a poem.

Hm... I don't know if I I have a favorite narrative poem. I wrote one a while ago called "The Play", but I guess your own poetry doesn't count.

Um, anything from Lord of the Rings? :D

(I'm actually not a poetry person but I love all the poems in LotR anyhow...)

I ADORE "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes. :D

Wow! Totally blow me over with a breath and scoop me up with a leaf! I had no clue this movie was based off of a poem. I'll have to read that before school starts...I'll let you know what I think.

As far as narrative poetry, I'm also not much of a poetry guy but I read some King Arthur poems last year for Lit that were pretty good. :) I already forgot their names, though.

I love that movie!!! And 'wow' to it being based off a poem...that's amazing!!! I'm not (surprise, surprise) a big poetry fan either, but I like Silverstein's poems. (I know most of them aren't narrative and I probably butchered that poor man's name.)

BTW, does anybody know the name of the poem that goes like this:

'I have a little shadow
that goes in and out with me.
What could be the use of him
is more than I can see...'

I believe that poem is by Robert Louis Stevenson, but I could be wrong.

If you google the words, I'm sure their title will come up. I can't remember either - I know I had it a couple times in school but the title escapes me. :)

I'm pretty sure he did write it, Melody. But I can't remember what the title was.

One of the reasons I started this thread is because reading this poem helped me realize some of the powerful stories that we as readers can miss out on because of our disinterest in poetry.

Yes. Poetry seems to convey something that 'normal' writing doesn't. I really enjoyed reading through that poem and seeing how so many of the images are so much stronger (because they are poetry) than they actually are in the movie.

"The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred Tennyson is my favorite poem, along with "Sea-Fever".
"The Defense of the Alamo" by Joaquin Miller is also really good.

I was waiting for someone to say "The Charge of the Light Brigade".

I haven't read it, but I've heard of it a time or two before and was wondering when someone was going to mention it.

No way, that movie was based off of a poem?

Haha, I knew the poem existed way before the movie! Maybe because it, like I, am Australian. Here's the poem: http://uqconnect.net/~zzdmcana/Man_From ... _poem.html
Banjo Patterson is one of the most prolific Australian poets. :)

I love the Man From Snowy River movie though! It is my all time favourite. :D Did you know that every actor in that movie (Except for Kirk Douglas who plays an American) are all australian? :D I think that's awesome!
