1996.
The first RPG; Dungeons and Dragons, was released. The world of games was toppled upside down and shook until its innards fell out like saute'd ham. My mother and father do not like the original RPG, (they said there is something bad, sorcery and all that bad stuff)... but I've heard there are others. Do any of you guys know what things like this are? Have you ever played one? Do you have one to recommend to each other?

And better yet...
Not having any of these things myself, not knowing where any are, and much less having enough money to buy one... I made one! I am quite proud of it too! A whole system of gaming in 30 little papers! Am I the only one who has made one?

I've dabbled in a science fiction RPG called Traveller before (and there are supposed to be two L's, by the way). Arien could talk about it a lot more. I'm also quite fond of computer game RPGs; they might be my favorite type.

Never tried to make one, though I did at one point think about attempting to modify the character creation format for Traveller so I could roll up some of my fantasy races as characters.

Heh, yeah I could tell a lot about it, although I haven't done much with it recently. And as for the spelling, well, this is a game where vacuum suit is abbreviated to 'vacc suit,' so you shouldn't be too surprised by the spelling. :D

Anyway, I think I've probably made an attempt or two to make one, but I doubt they were any good. I don't remember for sure, though.

I have a Christian one I can't get my family to play... I've always wanted to get into them myself, I've just never had the people to play them with.

What's the name of it, Rin? Somewhere in the basement, my dad has a Christian RPG sitting around. Probably not the same, since it's fairly old, but now I'm curious. :D

Ah I love RPG's, I've played over a dozen in my time. I am currently developing a Middle earth themed game along the lines of D&D.

I started playing Dungeons & Dragons as a non-Christian at age 13 (yes, this was way back in 1980), and I played it for three years, finally giving it up after becoming a Christian through the high-school ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. No one told me to quit, but, as my friend put it "the contrast between Jesus Christ and D&D was just too strong".

The problem with D&D is that you must choose your characters "alignment", which includes evil as an option. This means that the game is amoral at best, and encourages experimenting being evil at worst.

On top of this, the game encourages each player to pick their "god" from a book that includes every pagan god from every religion of the world ... but the God of the Bible is not included.

So you can add idolatry to the mix, too.

The real issue, though, is that the game has ZERO consequences for evil behavior and no moral framework. Personally, I would steer clear of D&D.

Anyway, this is not to say that the "concept" of how these games are played is wrong in and of itself. A hammer can be used to build things or destroy ... it is just a tool.

And there are Christian alternatives, the most recent that I am aware of can be found at: http://soterion.com

I completely agree with you, Treskillard. My parents feel the same and they know people who have committed suicide through playing D&D because they become so controlled by it.

Well, without having actually looked at D&D myself, I rather suspect that it could be adapted and changed to make it fit better with a Christian worldview. It might not be worth it, though, particularly if any of the already Christian alternatives are as good or better as a game, besides the moral aspects.

MMORPGs and such are the easiest, to use. And my personal favorite. Though just like anything not all of it is good...

I've played Runescape and AdventureQuest but only for a couple years off and on. I've never really been hugely into them like my younger brother who gets hooked on them incredibly easy. :P

I love these too because you actually get to see things. But the beauty of a table top game is you get to come up with anything you like. (As long as you're the GM :D )

But I do love games like Morrowind, Oblivion, and Dungeon Siege.
Also I am a fan of LOTRO mostly because I love LOTR.

I have considered working on a Biblical RPG boardgame... where you literally play on a map of Bible times and such. And I've created RPG boardgames that run on Microsoft Excel. I'd be interested in hearing more about yours... send us a PM if you like.

After reading a lot of D&D blogs, and being part of the Christians Gamer's Guild email list, I feel obligated to defend D&D, so I'll do it :D

First off, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tBx4ITJLpE to a video of Gary Gygax, the Creator of D&D, speaking in the Christianity and Gaming discussion panel at GenCon in 2007(before he passed away). He was a Christian, though he may have had some off-beat doctrinal ideas.

Also check out the Christian Gamer's Guild, Chaplin's Corner:
http://www.christian-gamers-guild.org/chaplain/index.html

Quote:
On top of this, the game encourages each player to pick their "god" from a book that includes every pagan god from every religion of the world ... but the God of the Bible is not included.

That particular book(Gods, Demigods and Heroes, later editions known by different names) is almost completely regarded as the worst D&D book in existence. It gave game stats to all the gods(how much health they have, fighting power, etc). Would you want some stats telling you how many sword thrusts it takes to kill God?(http://bloodofprokopius.blogspot.com/2010/01/deities-demigods-christian-perspective.html)

D&D is also a different world than ours. Consequences for evil are up tp the GM.

Personally, I prefer GURPS (The system that Traveller use) for it's greater variety and it doesn't have that pesky class-system.

Also, Traveller looks like an amazing world to play in.

Ooh, Traveller! :) I like Traveller. (In case that wasn't made obvious by the first sentence...) But I will point out that technically GURPS is just one of the systems Traveller uses. Not that it matters a lot, for the most part. If you want a long and detailed explanation of the different systems, I can probably give one, but as I said, it mostly doesn't matter much, as long as you like the one you're using.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten much of a chance to play it, but I like it anyway.
