I will use vampires in the story, but not as the "good guys." To a lot of people vampires are just fictional creatures, but to me they're not. Before I was saved, I used to be heavily involved with the occult, so I interacted with many "vampires" and contemplated being a "donor" at one point. Looking back, everything is just dark, demonic, and Satanic about it. So when I see the fictional kind of vampires, the image I get is of the human sort of vampires, so I could never write about the evil I've seen in a positive way. While they are in my stories, they are slaves of evil, or (in one story), some were spared their souls, but had to be changed back into humans to be "good".

Finally, someone else who was involved in the occult and backs up what I've said for a long time. No one believes me. *shakes head *

I'm the same way, Cheyenne. That's also why I have issues with Harry Potter, but I've had that/haven't had that argument elsewhere. The occult is very real, and lots of people do not realize how real it is. When we write about magic and demonic practices/entities, we have to be very careful how we portray it.

Yes, Jay, I know I used the word fond. :)

Amen.

I'm personally also very wary of how I portray werewolves for this same reason and witches/wizards/warlocks as well; demons themselves also go without saying. Because some stuff can be pure fantasy and have no biblical conflict. However, other subjects most definitely can provide conflict, especially when it happens in real life. When people are this deep in the occult in real life, I do not believe it should be glorified in a book.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, I'm pretty weird about aliens too (and everyone gasps because Airi is revealing info they never knew before), but that would be off topic. :D

Now see, the part I still struggle with is redeemable Vampires. I'm still conflicted about this subject, although, on the whole, I think they should not, under any circumstances, be redeemable. Except in one instance. Creature vampires I'm pretty firmly no on, and I'm no on most human Vampires, but I struggle with saying no on self inflicted vampirism. After all, this is redeemable in the real world, so why not in our stories? However, only self inflicted vampirism is redeemable in our world, therefore it is my exception. Although whether someone should or should not write about this subject, is another story.

Redeemable vampires is an interesting concept, and I think if one does it, it has to be done without, again, glorifying vampires themselves. I began - though never finished :P - a story once where every vampire was soulless and essentially demon-possessed except one, which God allowed to keep his soul (never actually got through the 'why' in that, except possibly the all-knowing factor of God). And then, the vampire he accidentally sired also had a soul. Though throughout, the soulless evil of the vampires was constantly emphasized, as was the evil in the two MCs as well. I had it planned that in the end, through different circumstances, both would accept Jesus. Though for them to be redeemed, their vampire bodies were burned up and they were brought back/reformed as humans. But I lost interest, so that never happened.

Yeah, it is a tricky topic, and not something I would recommend people writing without significant prayer and guidance. I think, if done appropriately, with utmost caution, it could be done, but like I said before, I’m pretty firm about how I think it should not be done.

I just read the last two pages of this discussion, and they were really interesting and enlightening. Thankyou, everyone. :D

I wouldn't portray vampires as good. the only way I would ever have them in a story would be to show them as servants of evil. As far as redeemable goes, it depends on what you view as vampires. If they're corpses animated by demons, then no. Airianna mentioned self-inflicted vampirism: that, as a choice you can make, would be redeemable. Kind of like lying, then going back and admitting to sin and repenting, except to a more horrifying degree. Correct me if I'm wrong, here, I'm a little bit out of my depth.

Vampires are a dangerous subject these days. Half my class reads solely for LA, but the majority of them have read Twilight. I've read them. The writing isn't very good, and the whole idea is immoral.

Nope, I think that was good, Aldara.

My Daddy is so ready for the Vampire phase to move on. I mean, we have Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Vampire Academy, Bloodline- the list goes on. :P

I steer clear of anything with vampires in, whether they're protrayed as good or evil; I just really don't like them. However that's more of a personal reason, I would feel bad if I read or watched anything like that which is why I don't. :) So I certainly, personally, couldn't write about them either.

Oh yes.
The funniest thing is that after reading Dracula, I really can't take any of it seriously (not that I could in the first place).

This is a fascinating discussion, and I don't think I can add much to it except my own opinion.

So, to echo Bushy and Ela, I personally don't care for vampires. I think they're horrifying, and I don't like to read or write that kind of horror/dark fantasy.

Other than that, two verses:

Deuteronomy 12:23, "Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life..."

John 6:53, "Truly, I tell all of you with certainty, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves..."
