A recent conversation in Chat led me to realize that many of us like the Nancy Drew games by HER Interactive. So, let us rave about them here. ;)

All of the games have the same basic premise: you, as Nancy Drew, are presented with a mystery. When you go to work on it, you discover a much older mystery, involving puzzles, secret passegeways, and codes. When you solve the old mystery (which usually involves finding a treasure), it helps you to uncover what is happening in the present.

The games are played in first person, from Nancy Drew's point of view, but in some of the games, you are able to switch to someone else's point of view. Nearly all of the gameplay involves solving a puzzle, breaking a code, or winning a little game.

The stories are usually quite interesting, and the perpetrator is usually not who you expect. :) Also, there is very little violence, and what there is is very tame. I think a gun appears in only one of the games. They take place in a variety of interesting settings.

Anyone else like these games? Which one is your favorite? Least favorite? Why?

Is it weird if I got creeped out played one? I've only ever played two. The first one I thought was fun, but the second one, the one that creeped me out... yeah, I refused to finish it.

Not necessarily weird at all. Which one was it?

I've played a few of them, and watched my sister play a lot of them (while making helpful comments, of course). I've liked most of them, but some are better than others. I can't think of any I didn't like at all, but it's been a while, so I may have forgotten.

Well, the white wolf one was the one I liked, and the Lycanthropy one (did not know that was what the game was about until I started playing. About 2 hours into the game I started having some heavy suspicions, and by the third hour they were having me research lycanthropy. I was done, at that point, and did not continue) was the one I did not like/was creepy. I know enough lycanthropy research to last me a lifetime. I didn't want to go there again.

Ahh, that one. Well, there isn't actually any Lycanthropy involved, it just looks like it. If I remember correctly, anyway; it has been a while.

Oh my goodness. I LOVE Nancy Drew!!! I got sooo startled twice in the Lycanthropy one too. Haha it was so funny. But these are definitely some of the most fun games ever! The one I couldn't figure out at one point was the one with the banshee in Ireland or something like that. I got so stuck on it. ~From the sister of this computer user

I was a fan of the Kapu Cave one. Jungles, bright colors, water, neat locations. That was the place to be. :D

These sound interesting. :) (Other than the whatchamacallit that Airi mentioned.) Where can I find them?

@Aele you know me so well!
But he's right, I do love the Nancy Drew games and I've played a lot of them. My absolute favorite is The Final Scene, which was my first and got me hooked for life :) so I highly reccomend that one. Some I don't reccomend (because of content issues - false gods, curses, etc.) are Secret of the Scarlet Hand (Mayan god of death - need I say more?), The Legend of the Crystal Skull, Message in a Haunted Mansion (séance) etc. I haven't played these but I have read reviews. Some really good ones are Phantom Of Venice, Danger on Deception Island, and Warnings at Waverly Academy.

I love the Nancy Drew games! A friend of my dad's sent us two of them (Secret of the Scarlet Hand & Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake). I played Scarlet Hand, but not Ghost Dogs, and that is what got my siblings and me hooked :) Scarlet Hand doesn't have anything bad in it, that I can remember. Basically, you just do a lot of researching into Mayan culture and stuff (like, the Mayans thought that crossed eyes were fashionable, so they would dangle things right in front of their babies eyes so that they would get crossed. Weird, huh?). Also, the suspects are almost always awesome! They've got these hilarious personalities. My favorite on Scarlet Hand wasn't actually a suspect, she was someone you talk to on the phone named Poppy Dada. Wow, she was a weird one :) Even now, like two years after playing it, we'll say, "Poppy Dada!" if we think someone is being strange. Ha ha.
There are only two we've never finished: One was Kapu Cave, I think. The one in Hawaii. I think our disc was defective, because we could never, ever get past one part in it. The second was the one with the seance in it. Not only was that game just about impossible, but the witch being in it was uncomfortable, to say the least.
Probably my very favorite would be Treasure in the Royal Tower. That one was awesome. It's got neat bits of history in it (about Marie Antoinette), and a crazy professor named Hotchkiss who is hilarious. It's kind of creepy (most of the time, you have to be up at night, and it's snowing outside) and there are banging noises in the walls) but I don't remember ever being really creeped out like I was with the one set in England with supposed werewolves.
Which brings me to that one: Curse of Blackmoor Manor. My brother and I were completely freaked out several times. It was like watching a scary movie! But it wasn't really that bad in the end.
We've played a whole lot of them together. There have been a few that really, quite frankly, bored me, such as White Wolf of Icicle Creek, and others that were really good, like Warnings at Waverly Academy. I have to say, though, that of course there are liberal undertones in them (i.e. political correctness), but it can usually just be ignored or skipped over.

@Aele: you could join in on the fun... ;)
I quote the games all the time! (as is evident by the new additions to my signature) I love in Trail of the Twister when you talk to P.G Krolmeister and he yells to the background, "Terrence! The arc welder is NOT a toy!" And all of Nancy's little weird bathroom sayings...sorry. I could go on about this forever :P Has anyone played the latest one, The Captive Curse? It's about a German castle where a monster comes every so often and kidnaps a young woman wearing a certain necklace. I want to play it, but my mom's not convinced it's okay. I've read reviews, and from what I can see it's a straight-up monster story but a Christian perspective would be nice :)

I love the Nancy Drew games! I think they are all a lot of fun to play. I have only won The Seceret of the Old Clock, but I don't really mind if I don't win. I thought the Trail of the Twister was fun, I loved the Nancy Drew called Warnings at Waverly, and also enjoyed Wolf at Icicle Creek Lodge. I really dislike two of the games, but I think the rest are great. Oh, and I didn't even know they already made a new one again.

I wasn't a big fan of Trail of the Twister, personally. There were a lot of chores and annoying little things and impossible puzzles, and there wasn't much of a scare factor. But that's just my opinion :)
As far as new ones go, there's a pretty consistent pattern - one comes out in June or July and again in late September to mid October.

Yes, I do agree that The Trail of the Twister could have had more excitement in it.

Wal-Mart normally has the newest ones, I've seen them at Target, and also Best Buy. And, of course, you can order them online at Amazon.

I've played all of the Nancy Drew games, from beginning to end. Honestly, the most recent one, The Captive Curse, is rather tame. The monster isn't all that scary and is talked so hypothetically throughout the game that there isn't a whole lot of fear or worry to surround it. If you are looking for a scary game, the Shadow at the Water's Edge is a much better choice. They did an excellent job with the surprises in that one. Overall, I really do think the Captive Curse is a perfectly alright game to play, as content doesn't really make you start believing anything misleading. . . other than that there is a monster.

I played Shadow at the Water's Edge and I really liked it. I liked the scariness and all the characters. Thanks for the Captive Curse review! Was it really short? I read that a lot of people finished it in one night.

:) My sister and cousin and I were playing Shadow at the Water's Edge one night when we were visiting her, and at one part near the end...

Sister: "No, don't turn around---"

Cousin: *turns Nancy around*

*we all scream*

What made us scream? Not telling. ;) We had a lot of nervous giggling the rest of the game. It was fun, but all those Japanese puzzles were so hard. :? But we found some spoilers online and managed to finish.

We all like Secret of Shadow Ranch. The puzzles aren't too hard, the activities are interesting, there is nothing creepy, and the tale of star-crossed lovers involved is so sad. :'( And the characters are funny.

I remember that part! It scared the tar out of me too! It was around one in the morning and it happened and I freaked out...my dad was asleep so that may not have been the best idea :P
I also liked Shadow Ranch, although having read the book I already knew what would happen. And Tex creeped me out :P

It wasn't necessarily a short game. What the reviews were saying was that the game itself took place in one single night, as opposed to multiple days. Since the puzzles were more for enjoyment rather than trickiness, it naturally did go by faster than some of the other ones.

*coughs and chokes on the dust in this thread*

 This thread should definitely be more active. *nodnod* Has anyone played the newest game yet? Tomb of the Lost Queen? I sooo want to. I have so many favorite games! Treasure in the Royal Tower, The Final Scene, Phantom of Venice, etc... SUCH a good series. They're pretty much the only video games I really play...

Speaking of the new game, did you know that HerInteractive is working towards putting these games onto mobile devices? I'm soooo excited about this project. But they're relying on fans to help this dream come true (which would be such an awesome thing! Having the games on mobile devices! And, they say it will help them do even more with the games. ^_^ ) Here's a link.

Basically, they need to raise 250,000 dollars before September 11th in order to bring the games to mobile devices... I reaaaalllly want this to happen. So if you're able to, it'd be awesome if you could donate. ^_^ But totally understand if you can't. Just bringing it to y'all's attention.

So... anywho... who is everyone's favorite character from the games? I don't think I could choose. O.O

Oh, and was anyone else super happy that Nancy is the same person in the games as she is in the books? They didn't change her personality!

I've played every single one! Favorite is still Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, but I also like Danger on Deception Island, and... is it The Scarlet Hand? That was a long time ago... anyway, they're fun. :D I haven't liked most of the more recent ones, but some of them have been okay. :)

I think it depends on the new game. The new ones I've played I've thoroughly enjoyed. But I also skipped some, too... Maybe I skipped the bad ones.

I LOVE Danger on Deception Island, Final Scene, haven't played Scarlet Hand yet (but am planning too!)... Um... I also enjoyed Phantom of Venice and Creature of Kapu Cave.

Last Train I don't like a whole lot because it seems so slow as it mostly all happens on the train... *shrugs* At least it has the Hardy Boys in it! ^_^

Danger by Design was good, too, but also slow. *needs to play it again now that she's studied French a lot* I really enjoyed The Captive's Curse, too. Alibi in Ashes was pretty good, too, though not my favorite.

OH! And Curse of Blackmoore Manner was good, too. Though really creepy, and I won't play it very often.

Are there any that you would recommend specifically?
