Phantoms are a race rather similar to elves in that I created them because I didn't want to use elves but wanted a race that could control elements. The first drafts of them were scary. (not scary as in, they were scary, but scary as in how boring they were...) Being that I've mentioned them frequently, I decided I should once and for all reveal exactly who and what these creatures are.

Phantoms are not ghosts or spirits anymore than any human you see walking down the street. They can marry humans, and their offspring can have up to all or down to none of the traits of their phantom parent. They do look quite different ( in what ways varies from type to type) from humans. Only one of the differences from humans are consistent - a phantom's eyes are never green or brown.

Here's the list of types, as copied from my document.

Fire Elemental Phantom:
True name is Ignis Phantoms, but among some humans they are just the fire phantoms. Ignis will be used most of the time, though, because the MC’s are among phantoms. They find just plain ‘fire’ a derogatory term, though Ignis means fire. They’re not harmed by fire, unless it’s extremely hot (like, white flame, which is about 2300 degrees Fahrenheit) or very persistent (no dancing in campfires!). Their eyes are actually orange, and they’ve got dark red hair.

Water Element Phantom: Their name is the Nauta Phantoms, which would literally mean “Sailor Phantoms”. They look as if a piece of the sea detached and formed a people. Indeed, they always live by the sea or by lakes, for they can not bear to be away from the beauty of water for long. Their hair ranges in color from pale blue, nearly silver, to a rich aqua color (although not too vibrant). Leaders in their communities dye their hair bright blue and purple. Grey colored eyes are much more rare than blue. Their skin is quite pale.

Wind Element Phantom:
The Aero Venti, occasionally called the wind riders. They can control wind very well, even cause small tornadoes (like, really small...) and handy gusts of wind, but their invisibility power is limited. They have silver hair, and grey eyes.

Dark/Non-Elemental Phantom: Tenebrae Phantoms or Noctis Phantoms. These are the most powerful phantoms, despite that they can control no element. Rather, they can blend into anything, even cause their shadow to disappear. This power is gained when they are about five. They can stay invisible for the longest time of any phantom. They are also one of the more rare phantom types. Because of their dark hair and pale skin, to those unfamiliar with phantom types, they are often confused with the Caliga phantoms.

Light/Non-Elemental Phantom
: Their name is Aurora Phantoms, and they are most interesting. To hide, they bend light around themselves. (there are cloaks that do this, in modern times, I think...) They can also hide other things and people in the same way by doing this. They have light brown hair, and bright blue eyes. They tend also to have rounder faces.

Earth Element Phantom: They are called the Silvan Phantoms. It literally means “forest phantoms”. They are good at being quiet in the woods, hunting, etc, and are very powerful (invisible!) in the forest. But out of the trees their ability is greatly lessened. They are generally good with ranged weapons (arrows and stuff, I think those are called ranged weapons) which are the only somewhat practical type to use in a forest. They have brown hair and a wider build than the other types of phantoms.

Mist/Fog Element Phantom: Called the Caliga [ka-lee-gah] Phantoms, literally meaning “fog phantom”. Not only do they hate being called Mists, some humans call them Misties, or Misty, which is quite demeaning. Caliga are one of the most powerful groups of phantoms. Their invisibility powers aren’t as good as a Shadow’s by far, and their ability to cause fog to surround themselves is pretty useless, but most of them have unusual skill with weapons, particularly the katana and shuriken. Many don’t realise this, though, because such weapons are in short supply to the average Caliga. (Kai... is not average.) They have jet black hair and medium dark skin. Not a single one has blue eyes, all have grey. They have no region where they tend to live more than any place else, provided it is somewhat safe and secluded.

I have far more I could put here, but I do not wish to bore you, so I'll save it for later posts. :D Hopefully you made it through all of that without too much skimming.

Wow! Really awesome! Love the idea of elemental race, and putting the race into different groups is really cool! Are there any types of phantoms that are rarer then others?

Almost all of my first drafts are horrid before I get a grasp on what something is lol :dieshappy:

@Willow - Thanks! Sure, but it'll be a while... I have to sort through my documents and piece together all the little bits of culture and such into a coherent post. :P

@Seven - Thank you very much! I had fun making and naming all of the groups (Mousie helped me with the naming). Only the Tennebrae could count as more rare than the others, but there are types that aren't seen as much, such as the Aurora and Nauta.

They're wonderful, Manda! :D Now, to the questioning...

How much does their culture differ from that of humans? How much do their cultures differ from one anothers? Are there more of them than humans or are they in the minority? Are there many resentments and disagreements between the different "types" of Phantoms?

I could go on for a bit, but I'll let you answer these first. ;) I love them, by the way. :D

Thank you! :D And thank you for the questions, too. :D

As far as I can tell, it varies quite a bit. But I've only got a few little things about each culture, scattered over several documents. When I get time I'm going to finish building the cultures and make a thread for them. :)

Kalisia Silverwing wrote:

Not too much. The phantoms don't see the different elemental abilities as separating them. Phantom villages are usually comprised of at least four different types. (for example, in Kai's village, there are Caliga (like him), Aero Venti, Ignis, and Silvan phantoms) The only type of phantom who doesn't live with the others much is the Nauta. They always live close to water, something which the other phantoms don't overly much care for.

Kalisia Silverwing wrote:

In Arr'etta, they are in the minority. In the world at large, though, it's about equal.

Kalisia Silverwing wrote:

I honestly don't know! XD I would assume not, at least at the moment. Because of the difficulties they face in Arr'etta, there's not much space for arguments and resentments and all that.

These are pretty good!
Only thing I didn't like was the name. It conjures up the wrong image in my mind. Maybe have their name within the world and use that and make it mean "Phantom"

That is some awesome stuff!
And about what you said in your first post: Bore us! Please! Bore us to death! I must hear more!

Other than what you said about eyes and hair how does their body structure differ from a normal human and could they disguise themselves as one? Is there anything you can tell us about Phantom culture and their relationships with each other and humans as a whole? And are any specific type of Phantom inherently evil or good, such as the light and dark Phantoms? Are there any kinds of Phantoms that you dare not tell us about?

As soon as you write a battle scene with these guys, let me know! :D
This has really got me interested in your world in general, where can I find out more?

P.S. Sorry about all the question marks?

@Joe - Thank you! Yah, I've had others give me a similar reaction to the name - it conjures up an image of a ghost or spirit rather than just an elf-like race. But I've called them that for so long, that I'm tempted to leave it. (plus, I'm terrible at coming up with names for races. XD )

@Kal - Thanks! I'll try. Posting this has made me realise how desperately they need more development. (and how little time I have to work on them. :P )

@Aeleknight - Haha, if you want to hear more, then does that really mean I'm boring you? XD Wow, what a nice bunch of questions. :dieshappy:

Quote:

I think most types could, the Ignis being the main exception. Ignis phantoms are tall and broad shouldered and it'd be impossible to disguise one as anything but a phantom. The other types are lighter of build than humans in Arr'etta, but some humans 'cross the sea are of a lighter build so it'd be assumed the person was one of these. Of course, there's the hair and eye problem, but if their hair was dyed and they kept their head down, no one would notice.

Um... they hate humans. That's about all I know. :P

Nope! Phantoms are as varied in evilness as humans are.

Noooooo! You have guessed my secret plot - to unleash upon you my hordes of unnamed phantoms!

I'm so kidding. XD No, as of this moment, all the types listed in the first post are all the ones there are. But I might come up with more, because I have ideas for another book... (I know, I should finish this one before thinking of another one, but it was a cool idea! Dragons and all that. :D)

You are not boring me; I just said that because you said you did not want to bore us (which you were not doing).

Is there any specific reason why? Something humans did to them?

Quote:

I was just wanting to know if there was anything else about any more Phantoms that could be told.

Well, that's good then. :D

Mmm, yeah, the humans sort of tried to kill them. Someone killed the king and automatically the humans blamed the phantoms (who else could get in save an unseeable person?) and the phantoms (those that escaped the angry citizen's swords) fled to the woods. Since then, although most humans don't kill phantoms on sight, relations between the two races are quite tense.

Yes, humans usually don't do that. But of course you meant, "Since then, although most phantoms don't kill humans on sight..."

I can understand why relations would be tense. I would not quickly trust myself to a people who wage war on suspicion. Did the whole human race wage war on every whole race of phantoms?

You could just fix the mistake instead of pointing it out....

No, just the humans/phantoms in Arr'etta. 'Cross the sea the humans/phantoms are still on good terms.

Sorry. It was a funny one. *grins*
Also I was unsure whether you meant humans don't kill phantoms or phantoms don't kill humans.

How do you pronounce Arr'etta?

Yah, sure. *rolls eyes fondly*
It's both ways, for the most part. Phantoms tend to be doing more of the killing, but they're never the ones who started the fight. (alright, not never, but most phantoms (excluding Kai) prefer to stay in their hidden villages and not start fights with humans (Kai is a totally different story. ))

I pronounce it "Ar-et-ta", but whether that's correct according to the rules of pronunciation or no, I really don't know. :P

It is good. I was mainly wondering whether the R was rolled.

Eh... since I really don't know the difference between rolled R's and non-rolled R's, and the likelyhood of me rolling it not on purpose is slim, we'll just say that the R isn't rolled.

I know that Portuguese uses it. And French singing, but they pronounce the R more gutturally when they are not singing.

Thank you, Seven!

I'm redoing the Tennebrae - had a rather interesting random idea pop into my head the other day that I think could be used for them - and when I'm done I'll post the new information on them. :)

Here ya are, the reworked Tenebrae phantoms! I just copied the whole thing, because 90% of it got rewritten. :)

The Phantom Book wrote:
Dark/Non-Elemental Phantom: Tenebrae Phantoms or Noctis Phantoms. These are the most powerful phantoms, despite that they can control no element. The length of time which they can keep normal invisibility is unmatched, but that is not the only thing they can do. Any Tenebrae phantom, when he/she comes of age (14) develop another ability - the ability to “go out of phase” to use a SG term. They are invisible and invincible, anything can pass through them without harming them - or even noticing that they stepped through them. It is because of the Tenebrae’s ability that the phantoms quite got their name, because they’d vanish and on one side of a person, step through the person, and reappear on the other side - without even leaving footprints. This has its weakness though - their eyesight grows dim, things look vague and shadowy while they are like this. Also, they can’t keep this up for more than ten minutes at a time, without practice or unusual power. They are one of the more rare phantom types, but as they are rarely seen anyway, many humans think this seventh type to be a thing of myth only. And because of their dark hair and pale skin, to those unfamiliar with phantom types, they are often thought to be Caliga phantoms.

It is because of the Tenebrae’s ability that the phantoms quite got their name, because they’d vanish and on one side of a person, step through the person, and reappear on the other side - without even leaving footprints. This has its weakness though - their eyesight grows dim, things look vague and shadowy while they are like this. Also, they can’t keep this up for more than ten minutes at a time, without practice or unusual power

I like that you give your phantoms a weakness, Manda. Phantoms so often are invincible. I think the way you use that weakness is very cool and unique.

The Rainbow in the Storm- My Blog

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Yes, nothing is perfect (save you-know-who! :dieshappy: ); that just adds realism to your world!
