I made the Devlinathrie because I wanted one of my characters to be attacked while they were in a boat, but I didn't want her to die, not yet anyway. But, there were no good sea serpents out there that did the job how I wanted it, so, the Devlinathrie was created!.

A Devlinathrie can grow up to 10 feet long. It is a rather skinny fish-like creature. It eats other smaller fish, birds, sea snakes, and really, any thing it can get a hold of. The Devlinathrie is covered in scales, but they are not as strong as a dragon's scales, more like a snake's. It is a very dark black with a thin stripe of navy blue running long-ways down it. In place of a set of teeth is has large venomous fangs that when they have pierced flesh they need to be tended to almost right away. They (the fangs) are arranged like that of a canine just, well, much longer and sharper. At the end of the tail (which is covered in scales also! Not at all like a dog's tail!) is a sharp rather arrow head five inch long point that also, like the fangs, is venomous.
The tail head is barbed, making it very painful when it is pulled out.
Their eyes are rather cat-like, just longer and thinner. The color of the eyes range from yellow to a pale blue. They are never brown or green.

Here's a picture, it's not great because I drew it and took the picture with a web cam, but I hope it still gives you an idea of what one would look like.

That beard looking thing of of its chin is actually some fangs coming out of its mouth...just it's a blurry photo and made not close up...

Very nice! They remind me of the eels from The Princess Bride.
I think your picture was good! It made it easier to visualize.

How big is a newborn? Is a newborn venomous as well? How long does it take to get their teeth? Are they sentient? Does their coloring vary slightly from creature to creature?

One thing I've noticed about fantasy creatures is that people will often give a very specific coloring scheme...which is ok. If I had to describe a cow, one of the things I'd say would be 'white with black splotches'. Does that mean every single cow is going to be white with black spots? Perish the thought!

Maybe on some the stripe is more purpley? Perhaps sometimes it forks into a double stripe, or is double the whole way? Maybe the stripe can be crooked? Or broken?

Good questions, Elanhil. I hadn't really thought of that, but you're right. It should vary a little more.

This is a very awesome and incredibly interesting creature. I have a question, do these things live in groups or are they solitary. Very cool beasts! Great job all around. :dieshappy:

They are solitary. But sometimes you can find four or five in one area...
