In a book I'm writing I need a good evil beast for my villain to become, so any suggestions would be lovely. Thanks. And I won't tell you his name because if any of you read the book it'd ruin it. :)

Could you provide a little more detail? Why, for instance, is your villain to become a beast?

The more details you give- the better our suggestions will be. :)

Do you have any basic idea or mental image of what the beast might look like? How would he would act? Etc. Because it would be easier to create an animal off of small tidbits you already have. :)

I too come to ask for more info. What must he be able to do as a beast? Is it a story like in VotDT, where being the beast changes his perspective on things and turns him good?

I was just thinking that he's really some evil creature pretending to be human. I'm thinking he's I dunno sort of like a shadow or something. It's hard to describe.

Ok, so it either has to be humanoid in form, or a shapeshifter. Or you could go all the way with the shadow thing and have it just be a 'presence' whose only indication that they are there is a shadow...

I suggest that you come up with several names for it. People from different parts of the world will know it by its different names.

If you have a basic idea of what languages sound like in different sections of your world, you can use those to help you name it. :) The most important one, and maybe the only one you'll actually need to come up with is the one that your MCs will know it by.

The letters S, R, N, T, and V lend themselves nicely to villain names (even the word "villain" uses two of them). Sauron is taken, and Sevastopol is a city in Russia, so those two won't work. Vanstar hits them all, and I don't know of any books with that name in them (although mine uses Nastar...). Pick a name that would give you the goosebumps to hear whispered in the middle of the night while you hear footsteps behind you.

Vanstar I like that name. It does sound like a good name to call these shadow beings.

Zhawar or Valishael might work...I don't know. If you like one of these, then go ahead and use it. Vanstar sounded fine until Elánhil said that. Now all I can think of when I read it is a big blue van driving around with a white star on it. ;) Oh well. Hope this helped. :)

Not to be prosaic here *gasp*, but you could call these strange shifty dark mysterious creatures simply "shades," "shadows," or some other "simple" name. Why? Well, it's one fewer fantasy name to remember. Plus, you know how creatures of darkness don't like to be named, and are limited/defined by names? And people might be afraid to call it by its true name? So it could have a true name like Sevslin {well, or something}, but everyone simply calls it "shadow."

Was that coherent?

Hey! That's what they (people in my book) do with Merashath! He is only spoken of as 'The black dragon' or 'The dark dragon'. :) It works quite well.

Alright. Corinthia! So now in terms of what these beings really are, I would say you have three possibilities.

Now my personal idea for you, Vanastar would be some sort of creature, with one form, not a shapeshifter, probably foul and nasty looking, but with the ability to create illusions. It could appear to be anyone, or anything. With skill, it might even appear to be entirely invisible. Only a strong mind, could see the Vanastar for what they truly are.

As for the appearance of the true form, I imagine some grotesque featherless cross between a human and a vulture.

Just throwing an idea out there. :)

Hm, good idea.

So this creature, is he hiding because he's stuck (i.e. Dragonheart A New Beginning), because he doesn't yet have enough power (i.e. Harry Potter), or because he likes to deceive more subtly (i.e. This Present Darkness)? I think based on those questions it gives you a better idea on what it should look like. Base an evil creature off a real creature that behaves similarly and people tend to catch on to its purpose quicker.
