Hello all. My name is Sam Starrett, also known online as Marshlord and LordoftheMarsh. Lately I've primarily been using my real name. I'm a Christian fantasy writer(you can read some of my stuff at my blog here: http://samstarrett.wordpress.com) as well as an amateur theologian, a Christian Universalist, and a political reactionary with a preference for monarchy.

I enjoy debate(Proverbs 27:17). My avatar, almost without exception, is Socrates(though I guess I'll have to make an exception here as human faces aren't allowed, right? A strange rule, but that's the owner's prerogative). I found out about this site from the member known as Esílis.

I am pro-Crusades, pro-Christendom, pro-chivalry, anti-abortion, anti-feminism, and pretty strongly anti-Islam. I admire the strong Christians of history, men like Charles Martel. Those guys had guts. I despise the sissification which the Church has suffered since their time.

I am currently working on a fantasy novel set in an alternate world with approximately mid-19th century technology and a bit of a Weird Western feel, though I don't follow the tropes of the Western genre too closely.

So that's my introduction. I hope my arrival won't cause too many people to leave. :dieshappy:

I like matching my wits with others in debate. It's a lot like a mindsport. On another level, I like the way that debate shows me flaws in my reasoning so that I can come to understand my beliefs better. Sure thing. As for the craziness, hey. Creative people(and smart people) are often a little nuts. My theory is that their(our, hopefully) brains are more complex and thus more prone to eccentricities and this sort of thing. It comes with the territory. If y'all are crazy, I'm sure I'll fit right in.

Thanks. I'm not sure quite how Western it will wind up being, as it's an alternate world and the last humans to arrive did so in the Renaissance. I know the hero goes west, I know the tech is at 19th-century levels, and I know there's a Wild West-style desert frontier, but politically, the landscape is quite different(the sequence of events starting with the American Revolution and leading through the French Revolution to World War I that destroyed old-order monarchical Europe have no equivalent in my world, Tolondra). So there's actually a King of Occida(the Western continent, roughly equivalent to North America), though his power is pretty weak if you go as far west as my hero will.

Oh, well, it depends on which admin. Emeth doesn't do it unless he's being very silly. (it was he that did it to me this time) Ines up there greatly enjoys doing it to people, and has been known to do it almost randomly. Hannah, on the other hand, thinks everyone's names should stay the same for the duration of their time on the forum. Hannah's not much fun. ;) The other admins/council members pretty much ignore our fun with names. :(

Welcome to HW.

Western tropes are generally simple. I can give you most of them since I write more Westerns than I do fantasy.

Pagans? That must have been fun. Do you mean pagans in the sense of non-Abrahmaic religionists, or do you mean pagans in the sense of people who practice tribal or, for lack of a better word, Völkisch religions like Norse or Greek paganism?

More like people claiming to be Christians when their behavior and way of thought claims otherwise and also those who practice Wicca. I dealt with a lot of stress during that time when I was trying to debate. Whatever I said there was always someone going at me. I stopped debating with them. It was not fun, for me anyway...

Hello and welcome!

You have blue skin with orange polka dots. Four eyes, one red, one yellow, one green, and one blue. You have four arms, two are furry and two are scaly.

Ah. Well, to each his own. I love such things.

Sam, sir, it is good to have you. I think you will find plenty of God-fearing Christian writers on this forum that would be edified by exchanging thoughts with you. We welcome thought-provoking posts around here. The forum team's philosophy is that "debate" is edifying when undertaken in good spirit, which you seem to have. May God bless your time here.

But, I will warn you - few people on here are serious 100% of the time. Especially in an intro thread! So have a cupcake, settle in, and I look forward to seeing more of your posts!

Thanks for the welcome. I've already met a few of you and found my discussions quite edifying. I look forward to encountering the rest of you.

I don't know. You'd better ask her. The name 'Marshwriter' doesn't mean anything to me. But maybe she's someone I know from another forum, under another name.

A little modly insert here...

As anyone who has survived Holy Worlds for more than a week will tell you, we're an encouraging community that welcomes anyone who proclaims the name of Christ in sincerity, regardless of church background, writing skill, political views, etc. It is the goal of the forum team to ensure that Holy Worlds is a place where members can voice their differing opinions - even debating over them - for the edification of others, without malice and hurt feelings. It is amazing how beneficial a contrary opinion can be when presented in good spirit.

Holy Worlds is a place for that, and the forum team spends hours reading every single post to ensure that spirit stays in place. Never would we allow the neighborhood to "go," not even in one thread. If you want to ruin this forum, you will do it over Jay's dead body with his forum team spread around him in glorious array. Until you kill us all, the forum team will do everything to make Holy Worlds a place where every member - every member! - can find home.

Yes, I'm getting dramatic, but I speak the truth. My point is - the neighborhood isn't going anywhere, and neither are our beloved members. While some humor is fine, let's not see the party turn into a rain shower that puts riffs between members or even gives them the wrong impression.

Thanks, guys.

It's pretty hot outside here, but since I'm inside...*sips hot chocolate*

And regarding the glitter: If any more gets thrown in here, we're going to have to start removing it with a shovel.

No worries, Philadelphia. "There goes the neighborhood" is just a little self-deprecating humor. In fact, I hope to contribute something edifying more often than not.

A side note: I have a tendency to be rather sarcastic. This is usually taken well in person, but online, it's harder to tell. While I'll do my best to tone it down in light of that, if you do see me say something that causes you at first blush to take offense, please bring it to my attention before you get any hurt feelings. In all probability it was meant in good fun and the grin on my face was lost in the typing.

No worries at all, Sam, and thank you! I myself love sarcasm and snark (you should see the blog template Eruheran is making for me - there's snark formatted right into it), and I've been known to humorously depreciate myself. (I just got in trouble with Jonathan for doing it just the other day. ;) ) I know how the "JK" can get lost in online translation. Rest assured, if someone takes offense at a comment - from anyone - that's exactly what the forum team does, investigate and happily encourage people to do better. We don't jump to conclusions - there's so many sane people like Hannah Marie up there for that. ;)

It wasn't anything you said that inspired me to post that modly note. It was the jokes about people leaving - and a post that sounded honestly hurt - that disconcerted the mod in me. Snark is good, but joking about people packing up and leaving doesn't encourage friendships with the newbie.

Though I must say, "Something to do With Glitter" would make a very nice title for just one thread. ;)

On another level, I like the way that debate shows me flaws in my reasoning so that I can come to understand my beliefs better. And on yet another level, in the course of a debate I can learn something new and maybe even change my mind about the main subject due to compelling reasoning or new information. So I like it all. And, of course, if I change my opponent's mind, that's best of all.

I love discussing for these reasons. I tend to avoid the word debate because it makes people nervous. Although, many would say I do debate. *shrugs * Depends on how you look at it. I see a debate as being circular, a discussion is productive.

I should have known it was my dear little brother causing all these name... issues? *cough cough clear throat *

So, do you live in Europe, Sam?

As a side note, I did not like the “over Jay’s dead body” remark. :P Because that implies I was killed off too, which we all know would not happen. ;)

And regarding the glitter: If any more gets thrown in here, we're going to have to start removing it with a shovel.

No body, and I mean nobody, shovels out my glitter!!!! *glares at Little E and bigger E, who are bound to try something *

Now that we got all that out of the way, I can properly sit down and talk with you, Sam. I am interested in getting to know you. I am very fond of long posts with lots of challenging discussion, so we should get along well. There is lots of godly relationships and conversations to be had around here, so pull up a chair and type away! :)

*hates being late, because then there is not much to say anymore… * :P

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Didn't you read the whole sentence, Airianna? It said "over Jay's dead body with all his forum team spread gloriously around him." That includes you. ;)

Now I feel like going off and writing Alaidia, my kind-of-dark-and-serious fantasy...

See? I was making a case in point, Jonathan. ;)

I couldn't help it! He used the phrase "deprecating humor" first, and I instantly thought of our incident! ;)

Ummm... that was my point, Philli. I didn't like reading "over Jay's dead body," because of the implication that my own death would have occurred. :P
