Since I really like pegasus, I made them a main creature in my stories.
There are two different kinds (I think they might be different species; I haven't entirely decided), the Black Pegasus and the White Pegasus.

The black ones are my favorite, even though they are primarily used as war mounts by the "bad guys". They are large and look like an eagle-winged Friesian. While they tend to be ill tempered, they are very courageous animals. They seem to know that they are strong and few things frighten them.

The white ones are much smaller in comparison and are built like an Arabian. However, what they lack in size, they make up for in speed. Their wings are falcon like, allowing them to dive and maneuver swiftly. Although they are naturally skittish, they are very willing animals that will do all in their power to please those that have gained their trust.

A Black Pegasus can carry one small person and lots of heavy armor and weapons, or it can carry two adults and no armor.
A White Pegasus can only carry one lightweight adult with very minimal weaponry (usually a bow and arrows).

Both pegasus reproduce slowly and are highly valued by all peoples. Even in battle, a pegasus is rarely fired upon.

This is my first attempt at attaching an image. I hope it works!
(These are just quick sketches, so I hope they show up well enough after being scanned.)

Wow, they look great! I love pegasus'. I think they look awesome. You've done the wings really really good; I've always had trouble drawing the wings. :) Great job! :D

Those first two worked so here are two more - a black pegasus in battle mail/armor and a white pegasus in fighting harness adorned with highly reflective discs of metal (to blind opponents).

Those are skillfully drawn, with both kinds of Pegasus equally well developed.

One thing...there will be people who dislike the name pegasus for a race, because Pegasus was the name of a specific winged horse in Greek myth, not the race.

Other than that, though, I like them. Nice drawings, too. :)

Then what are flying horses called? Do they have a breed name, or are they just known by pegasus?

I don't think the Greek myth had a name for the race. Pegasus might have been one-of-a-kind, too. I don't know it that well. I just know I've seen people complain about flying horses being called pegasuses and gorgons being called medusas. *shrug*

Very well done, I did something a little similar with hippogryphs but it's really just matching a suitable breed of horse to a suitable raptor. Nice drawings too.

I think it would be better if you gave them more bird-like features if you want it to seem realistic. Unless they fly by magic which works, too.

Instead of Pegasus you could call them whatever "fly horse" or "winged horse" is in your story's language.

Winged horses. Awesome. :) I like the drawings, especially the armor/ harness ones.

Just one question though. Does the Black Pegasus have armor on his wings? He probably wouldn't be able to fly like that.

Thanks everyone. It would be great if I could think of a better name for them, but then again, I like some familiarity in a fantasy story. Everyone knows what a pegasus is.

Great idea, but I haven't made up any language(s). I'm not very good at that kind of thing. I have languages, but they are only mentioned, never actually used.

Yeah. It's supposed to be lightweight and plated to allow for movement. I really don't know if he could fly with it or not in real life (in fact, I doubt that a real horse with wings - even as large as I drew them - could actually get airborne ;) ).

Go for it!

Just had a thought pop into my head - wouldn't it be fun if there were mini pegasus for some short race of humans? Hee hee.

Being a horse lover, I love how you've developed these creatures. :D

Are they sentient (human-like in thoughts and emotions) or are they more like animals?

You said that the black ones are used mostly for the bad guys' war mounts. Can they be used for the good guys, or are they inherently bad?

I love the idea of reflective metal on the white pegasi; that's a neat battle tactic, blinding your enemies. :)

A Shetland pegasus would be adorable.

No, they aren't sentient, but they are a bit more intelligent than the average horse.

They can (and will be in my story) be used by the good guys. Just like all animals, they aren't inherently bad. They do, however, tend to be somewhat stubborn, proud, and high-strung creatures. The white ones are much better tempered and far more willing to be handled.

Actually in a few myths it was said that once the dragon was slain it's heart could be eaten to gain it's power, plus MASSIVE experience points!!!

Do they need armor since you said that they are rarely shot at, even in battle? Just a thought, how would you break a pegasus, since they would fly off with you? So can they carry anyone with armor if they have armor on? In other words, you said that the black pegasus could carry one armored human. Was that including the pegasus' armor?
