This is a thread where you can share any flags, crests, or coats of arms you've made for any part of your world. I'm trying to do more with heraldry, so I'm curious to see what everyone else has come up with. This is the first coat of arms I've made for Lor-Amar.

These are the personal flags I made for Tanner and Kaida.

When I was in high school (and taking a "Writing Workshop" class so I could claim this was schoolwork ) I spent a lot of time developing coats of arms for various characters. I particularly liked developing the heraldic descriptions. The descriptions I made that survive and I can find, unfortunately, are all too complicated for the web-based image generators to produce an image to post here ...

I made this one for fun. The Latin motto is one I often find myself saying.

I will freely admit that my Latin is growing slowly rusty. But there's a couple of things about that "motto" (I prefer the word "epigram" or "maxim" for such things that aren't intended as guiding principles) that make me wince: First, "causa" is redundant ("haec causa" is "this reason", and just as in English "this" can stand alone). Second, "non potest ... esse" is an awkward construction. In any case, it's a broader statement than the English title above the image: "this cause is why the good cannot be." And third, while in Latin one can use almost any sentence order, it's most common and natural to place the main verb at the end. A rendering closer to the English but in more idiomatic Latin would, I think, be "Haec quod non bona habere possumus est."

Yup. I speak Latin, I just didn't want to take more time away from my writing on a whim, so I just took what GTran gave me.

How would one go about making a coat of arms/herald/crest? (And is there a difference between those three....)

I love that sort of stuff, but have no idea where to start....

A herald is a person who makes introductions, or the act of making an introduction. Different individuals would have different symbols used to introduce them, the same as we wear name tags in certain settings today. Heraldry is the system of using those symbols to mean different things. The crest was the symbol that represented your family line, and the coat of arms was the shield that bore the crest.

I usually start here with my family crests, but there are other websites that will also give you the meanings of different shapes in the backdrop, and pictures of what certain symbols look like. You can also do some research and make up your own, since what we know of heraldry is usually exclusive to Europe.

Most crests are based on a few key elements such as where the family lived, what rank they held in society, how they may have gained fame, what they value, and what traits they have that set them apart from other families.
