In my webcomic Guild Tomes Paladins, Rippers, Agents, Warriors, Seekers, tinkers and Sages are born with what are called sparks, dormant lobes of the brain and nerve clusters that when active give depending on the spark.

Paladin Spark: Power of wards, healing, fire, lightening, light and increased toughness and strength making paladins well suited to the role as the Knights OF The Church.

Sage: Various elemental, monster taming, energy and shape shifting powers to rival and strike back against the magic users that threaten the church.

Agents: Various psychic powers and agility that makes them adept spies and infiltrators.

Rippers: Huge amounts of strength, stamina and durability for hunting and fighting large monsters.

Warriors: Increased strength, agility, toughness and stamina that makes them excellent at mastery all forms of combat and fighting against mobs of foes or crossing blades with other powerful fighters.

Tinkers: Vastly intelligence that allows them to create advanced weapons and machines.

Seeker: Vastly increased agility that makes them fast and deadly with long range weapons.

The bible makes it clear that magic isn't for Christians so I tried to think of another way to give amazing powers to my characters and sparks are what I came up with, they follow more of an X-men X-gene kind of thing but instead of one power it allows the person to have access to a whole pantheon of powers and agilities and spark energy.

I figure if the characters are born with these powers and its a natural part of their anatomy then they are natural abilities. No magic words, no dealings with spirits, just natural talent, discipline and hard work like becoming a good shot with a bow or a Olympic athlete.

Sorry if this isn't more clear, if your interested let me know and i'll share the link to the comic on DA with you! X3

God bless brothers and sisters!

How interesting...it reminds me of savants.

I like the variety in the way the various powers are matched. It's a little unusual.

This is how I look at it too. We've actually had quite a lot of discussion about that concept.... We came up with a term for the kind of 'magic' that is really just a different way for the world and the people to work, like you're describing here: Cobha. It's a useful concept.

Basically, Cobha is anything that is possible in a fantasy (or sci-fi for that matter) world that is impossible in this world. So it works however you want it to. :D Brain-cells, genetics, no explanation at all. The difference is that magic (which is forbidden by the Bible) relies on using spells, charms, etc. to command a power that God did not intend for us to wield. Whereas Cobha says that the power is simply a natural part of the way God created your fantasy world.
