If this goes somewhere else, sorry. Someone can move it.

This thread is to talk about the Stargate franchise by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin.

Of course, we'll also talk about Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate: Universe, Stargate: Infinity, I guess (though I never saw it), and all of the movies.

My Aunt loves Stargate! I must admit that I have never watched Stargate. Although, I might have watched one... I can't remember.

It was my Dad. He was flipping through the channels and - as I remember it - saw one of the later themes and was like, "Hey, it's MacGyver!"

I haven't seen them, unfortunately. I'm not very much into Sci-Fi in many ways.

You should take a look at our Stargate thread on HWSF, Balec. :) I think we might have some Stargate fanfics there too.

I thought the movie was okay, but I didn't like the TV shows.

I saw the first movie yeeeeaaars ago. I don't remember anything from it.

And I've seen 1/2 of the first episode, but I was never able to finish it. :P I want to watch more of it, but I don't have Netflix at the moment...though we might get it again here soon.

I'm pretty sure I'll like it, though. :D

Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are an excellent example of really fun and humorous characters. They are some of my favorite characters of all forms of media. :D
Rodney McKay and John Sheppard = incredible.

Universe was thought provoking/depressing, but not fun.

Exactly

I could go ON and ON about why Universe was cancelled and didn't appeal to SG fans.

Just a few things:

1) They switched the days so much. If you didn't have, like a DVR with a search engine/thing or used the internet, and if you recorded it with your VCR and missed 2 weeks, if was on Tuesday. Then Monday. Then Friday.
2) Too edgy and modern for a Stargate show. The characters had more 'modern' dilemmas: Greer, Wray.
3) The Stargate was just there. It wasn't really a major part of the storyline, except when they did that "God" thing, which was probably just a way to say, "Christianity is fake, because of this."

Pretty sure they're a big part of why I switched to watching Atlantis without having actually watched a full season of SG-1. I have every intention of watching more SG-1, but right now, I'm more interesting in watching Atlantis. (*only started watching any Stargate four or five months ago*)

I honestly have no real interest in watching Universe. I don't think I've heard/read anything about it that's made me think I'll like it that much. I even read a youtube comment arguing that Universe was better than the others because, in part, they killed off characters people liked (or something like that). Funny thing, that doesn't make me want to watch it. :P

It's true, but I think you should at least watch the episodes that had SG-1 and SGA characters in it so you can see part of SGU and you can see characters that you actually like.

SGU was like Battlestar Galactica (A lot of people said Universe was Stargate's version of Battlestar), but it wasn't a copy. I see similarities (The darker, grittier side of things, the silly space shots when a ship is traveling in hyperspace and near the end of the shot, since the ship is traveling away from you and getting smaller, it zooms in <-- bad idea in my opinion), but I liked it. The characters all had problems, and, y'know, the like, but still, I think you should at least watch the episodes that had Jack, Sam, and Daniel - and McKay (Funny episode)

I've seen most of the original movie (it was a scratched disc. :( ) and all of SG-1 and the spin-off films as well as SGA. My first scifi show. ♥

I'm very fond of it. Particularly fond of Daniel though all the characters are endearing in their own way. (Beckett! *sobs*)

GAH! Don't remind me of Beckett... The friend who introduced me to Stargate recommended I start with SGA - and then told me his fate. And, of course, he was my favorite character. Seriously. Writers must hate me...

And that was my favorite episode too! Well, minus the end and the fact I was almost expecting the end... *groans*

I watched the movie again, and I have a higher opinion of it now. The story is a bit generic (aside from the Stargate idea), but otherwise the film is exceptionally well-made.
