All that is known of this mysterious and secretive race of Vitarentel comes from the mouth of Aelundei. This group rarely deals with the people who dwell above the waves of the ocean, and when they do, it is rarely kind dealings. They have been known to drive sailors mad with their wailing lamentations for their fate, and thus have earned the name of Sirens. They will sometimes tamper with the rudders or hulls of ships, causing them to go far off course, sometimes straying into enemy waters. They are covered with tiny scales on the back, sides, and arms and legs, giving them the appearance and feel of shark skin. They have enormous jaws, lined with sharp rows of teeth, and on the sides of their necks are gills for breathing underwater. They do have lungs, but those act more like swim bladders under the water, although they do allow them to breathe on the surface, as long as their gills remain wet. The Sea-elves also have large, powerful tails. I will try to get a sketch of them in the art page, in my spare time (of which I have very little at the time).

Sea-elves or Sirens, were once elves living on the Western Coast of Eleavemar. They lived on the shore of the sea, swam and dove in it, and legends hold that they could build ships which could travel under the water. There is no evidence to support these claims, but they were still highly advanced int the art of seafaring. Over time they began to worship the sea and her fallen guardian angel, instead of Vitaren, so Vitaren cursed them and gave them that which they wanted, and they became as they are now. Since then most have turned back to serving Vitaren, and they defend the ocean from her former guardian angel with the help of her new one. They worship the one true God, and he blesses them in return with great strength. There is a prophecy that an army will rise up from the sea in Vitarentel's greatest hour to rescue her from the Dark One, but scholars debate how this would be possible, or even if it refers to the Sea-elves at all.

I like the story of how they became Sea-elves and yet now serve the one true God.

It would be interesting to see how it would work if it does refer to the Sea-elves.

I agree with Jonathan, this is awesome! I also like the legend part, makes me wanna find out if it's true or not! :D

Do they have any maritime weapons to use against each other or against ships? Or do they have peace among themselves and just tamper with ships?

They have no swords, it is extremely hard to swing under the water, so they use spears. The spears can be thrown when above the surface, and used as lances under the water. The factions supporting Vitaren and Moren (the Dark One) are constantly at war. They do have a stretchy substance which they shape like rubber bands. You hold it in the hand, then put the end of the spear on the band, then pull it back until the hand is gripping it right behind the spear head. When hunting fish, you get close, point your spear at the fish then let go and the spear shoots forward and spears the fish. Then you chase the bleeding fish until it stops. The also use short knives which are straight edge on one side, and serrated on the other for cutting through ropes, nets, or dense seaweed. It could also be used in the event of fighting on land.

For those of you wondering how these could possibly survive on land and fulfill the "prophecy," I am still working on it, but I am thinking about having them wear light maille armor (or perhaps shark-hide armor instead, it would be lighter) with a watertight chamber around the neck to old seawater, with a device to agitate the water when the Sea-elf moves to keep the water oxygenated... How this will work, I am still figuring out.
