What is even more confusing is when there's multiple people around you with the same real name as you... Yikes.

Wow, this thread has been an awesome read! And quite confusing since I didn't know half of your old usernames. Mine has a story behind it too...

My sister had joined a game online called Horse Isle, and I wanted to join too. She had used the name "DairyMaid" since she loved cows at the time. I pondered, ummed and arred over a username, and I eventually (reluctantly) used "SnowyRiver" from the epic Australian movie. It was only after this, my Mum suggested "BushMaid", after a brilliant old outback Australian book called "A Little Bush Maid". This was a book I adored, because it was handed down to me from my Grandma, which was handed down to her from her grandma. So this book was very special.

However, Horse Isle admin didn't want to allow the name change, but Mum was kind enough to write to them on my behalf, and they allowed me to change it. Since then, I have been the Aussie "BushMaid" on every website I come across, and I am pretty certain if anyone happened to call me 'Bush' in real life, I would answer to it. It has become a part of my identity; both the book, and the name!

Note: I too love Age of Empires! Age of Conquerors is really good... I've played many awesome multiplayer games with my brother.

There's nothing particularly special about my username. Leandra is the name of a character I made up a long time ago; she was/is at least somewhat based off of me. When I needed a pen name a few years back, I decided to use Leandra, but I wanted a last name as well. I liked the way Falconwing sounded, and it gave it a bit of a fantasy feel, I thought. So, Leandra Falconwing.

My username is the MC of my book. And I'm pretty sure I'd respond to it, because after only 2 days of Letterboxing, at an event, I was responding to 'Pinstripe' my trail name.

My username originally came from Macilien, which is the Elven name I gave myself after I first saw The Fellowship of the Ring when I was 13. It meant something like 'sword maiden', I think. I used it in one of my first fantasy stories I wrote at that time. Now I've heavily revised that story into a trilogy I've been working on for the last couple years and changed the spelling of the name into Makilien. She is the MC of the trilogy.

My username comes from way back when I had imaginary friends. (Okay, that's not as far back as I'd like to think)
It was at a point when my games were evolving from simple imaginary friends to a story with a plot. I needed a name for me, so I looked one up. I found Aldara, which means 'winged gift'.
Now I'm Aldara.

My username, Lycanis, is based on a faction of the Werewolves in my fantasy world.
These Werewolves started out as bad as the others-murdering, stealing, cannibalism, etc. They were part of the vilest society in the world. Then God revealed himself to them and a few followed him-these were called the Lycanis (named after the first one to follow God's call).

So the way my name applies to myself in real life is how I as a sinner am really a horrible, vile person that no person (and especially God) should want to know at all...but by God's grace he has changed me and I am in the process of sanctification and learning to follow him more closely.

My username is from the Lord of the Rings. In the forests of Lorien, there was a small golden, star shaped flower, which was called the Elanor. It was also a flower that Sam Gamgee named his daughter after.

Random fact: In Elvish Elanor means Sun-Star.

About three years ago, I needed a username for NaNo. I brainstormed, and came up with Elly, which is possible nickname for my middle name, Elizabeth. When I joined HW, I kept the name, and later added 'of Zoriah'. Zoriah is the name of my world and I liked the sound of 'Elly of Zoriah'.

And then, whenever we heard of the troubles befallen our great leader, I decided to change my name to 'Maiden Elly Mimetes'. At first, I went with 'Lady Elly Mimetes', but I thought the first half sounded a bit unbalanced. I like 'maiden' because it evens my name out.

Actually there is a thread for this, here. I shall go track down a moderator and ask them if these can be merged.

Search can be a bit fickle, and it took me a bit of digging around to find it too, so don't worry. It happens.

"Calenmiriel" (Kah-lehn-meer-ee-ell) is the Elvish form of "Jade" which was as close as I could get to my actual name. I also go by the shorted nickname "Calen".

Temporarily, my username is Calen Tiqwah Mimetes, in support of our great leader, Sir Emeth Mimetes. "Tiqwah" is the Hebrew word for perseverance/hope. "Mimetes" is translated as "an imitator" or "follower".

My username is my nickname in real life. I got it after football practice when someone said, "Watch out, it's Roager the Ogre." The name stuck and the majority of my friends have been calling me Roager for over seven years now.

It has got to the point where my best friend's girlfriend accidently used it as my surname while making introductions.

Since posting my story on this thread about my username, my awesome friend Bek has taken to calling me either "Bush" or "Maid" and has gone so far to address letters to "The Maid" and they actually arrive here. So "BushMaid" is very much an ingrained part of my identity now.

A group of local indie writers who I associate with in an effort to further the recognition of my name, knowing that my name is Matthew but seeing all my stuff under the name Luke, decided to call me Muke.
