Yancy was the second son of Rynaud and Helen of Yen. The second son of the rulers of Yen is not a position to be envied. He grew up jealous of his brother. Janin was important to the entire world, everything centered around him. Terrance was equally ignored, but Terrance had the freedom to live his life however he chose. As the heir to the Prince of Yen Yancy knew he wouldn't be allowed to leave the capital until Janin had a son of his own old enough to take on the role. He knew he would someday inherit Laois, a small kingdom across the sea, but so far he hadn't even had a chance to visit.

Discontent with his role, Yancy began to day dream of succeeding to his brother's throne. He had a very practical outlook on life and constantly disagreed with Janin's visionary take on Tell's Law. The two argued constantly, and Yancy succeeded in convincing himself that he would make a better king than Janin. Then Janin made his biggest mistake ever, and the mortal king Derek became a guest at Yen.

With Janin in the mortal world and Herene in prison, both Peliodares and the king preoccupied with ruling the country, Yancy and Derek found themselves the other's only company. Yancy showed him the kingdom, and taught him the law, and complained about his brother. He thought that he would have Derek's sympathy, for wasn't Janin the source of his problems also? But he was surprised to find that the mortal prince bore no animosity towards the man who had separated him from his home.

This continued to disturb Yancy as the events of his brother's life continued to unfold. Attempts at demanding explanations from his brother do not go well, and only after thwarting Janin's attempted suicide does he finally begin to understand his role as the heir of Tell's heir. It's too late to stop what the stars had set in motion at Janin's birth, and at the end of the story Yancy has the inheritance he no longer wants.

Time passes, and no more tragedy occurs. Yancy marries, and has children. At the age of thirty-two he inherits the throne of Yen. He and his oldest son are killed in the same accident ten years later, setting up the events for the falling of the Fourth Age.
