The last of the pure-blooded Elloi had come down out of their mountains. The wizards had been utterly crushed, and their power severely limited. The great magic and wonder that had marked the first age had begun to slowly slip from the race without their even noting it's passage.
The wizards kept their written magic, but the number of wizards was steadily dwindling, and soon the power of the Elloi was reduced to a simple gift.
Every child was born with a gift, a shadow of one aspect of the immortals magic. Some of said gifts are the gift of shapeshifting, second sight, mind reading, transmutation, or character reading.
Many had gifts that drove them to study magic, although few possessed enough skill to truly become wizards. But only through wizardry could they retrieve a little of their lost heritage.
I could use ideas on other gifts, specifically one that would drive an heir to a throne to study magic in secret.
