Hey all, I'm the new guy. Since I've been working on writing my own book for a couple years now, I decided to sign up when I heard about this place.

My novel has undergone numerous significant changes, basically because I had no idea what I was doing. I still don't really have any idea what I'm doing, but now I have an idea of a few things I'm not doing, so a little bit of progress at least. It was originally a fantasy, then a little less of a fantasy in a medieval-ish setting, and it has since morphed into a horror in a medieval-ish setting.

Anything I should know? Feel free to ask me anything you like.

I guess I'll share a bit more about myself.

I'm married and have two kids. I come from a big family--I have 14 siblings. I'm in the middle.

I love heavy metal, and collect CDs. My collection isn't huge, but I've got around 500 albums. Some of them are actually extremely rare.

Favorite authors would probably be Joe Abercrombie and H.P. Lovecraft. (What a pair to list together, huh?)

Aside from all the amateurish junk I've written (which lies in a forgotten, ominous file on my computer called "OLD"), I have three complete short stories (one largely trash, and the other two pretty decent IMO) and about 12,000 words in my novel written. My goal is to write at least a little bit every day, and I'm making good progress. Many holes to fill in and wrinkles to iron out, but I know if I just continue to get words on paper I'll get there.

It wasn't actually until I tried my hand at short stories that my current novel idea came around. Before this, I'd made several attempts at a novel but the ideas had always been...not bad, but woefully incomplete. So I decided to write some short stories. The first one was the trash one. I may rewrite it sometime. The second one, which has seen a good deal of editing, has since become my favorite of the three and was the eventual springboard for my novel idea. The third one was just supposed to be funny and silly.

Interestingly, as my novel ideas progressed, they became less "epic" and simultaneously more simple and more creative. The scale grew more modest, basically. I'm very happy with the idea I've got now and I have a good vision for it--whether or not I can create this vision remains to be seen.

Welcome to Holy Worlds!

It's kinda funny....as you were describing your writing journey, there are so many parallels to my own. I started out working on a huge fantasy world (still going to write that series......one day) and then got lost because I didn't know what I was doing. Now I have written a couple novellette/novella length stories, with a few short stories thrown in the mix as well.
I hope the community and resources here help you further along your journey as a writer! :)

Areth (peace),

Karthmin

That sounds quite intriguing. I'm a big fan of good old-fashioned horror, including in historical settings. I enjoy H. P. Lovecraft's work, especially when his stories have happy endings.

Welcome to Holy Worlds. Glad to have you. I was reading through your writing journey. It sounds like you are finding your style which is fun and awesome and exciting all the same time. Just remember that your style is your style no one elses and its unique. I personally am finding my style. I like writing childrens stories best. The novel im working on is more young adult. A definite challenge for me. Anyway blessings on your writing any questions just ask! Again welcome :-)

Welcome, Zymologist. I recognize the -ologist suffix; care to enlighten me on the Zym?

There's probably lots of stuff you should know, but I am not entirely sure where to begin. If you have any questions about stuff (where is x? how do I x? why are all the people here so.... strange?) please feel free to drop me or anyone whose name renders in yellow or red a Private Message through the UCP to ask. We've been around for years and (we think) we know everything one could want to know about stuff here.

I think all writers have a file called "OLD" that they hope never sees the light of day. And every few years everything gets moved in there as the once NEW becomes OLD.

Hope you find this place helpful! If you want to share your stories with the forum, look for "The Fireside" within the genre you are interested in (probably fantasy for you, since I imagine horror fits in there best).

Hey all, and thanks for the welcomes.

Zymologist has been my screen name ever since college. I was trying to think of a good screen name for some dumb online game, but I was stumped. So I pulled out my dictionary and started rifling through it...hoping for some inspiration.

Since I started from the beginning, I sat there for quite a while. ;)

Eventually, I found this word "zymology" and thought it would make for a unique, funny screen name. So I used it, and it's stuck ever since as my screen name. Zymology is the study of fermentation, so a zymologist is basically a beer scientist.

I'll consider sharing my short stories on here. I'm a little hesitant, naturally, but I also don't intend to try to publish them at this point, so it might be worth a shot.

I saw this website mentioned on facebook by a friend of a friend, and it sounded up my alley, so here I am.

Ooh, a logline for my book. Good question.

My answer is...no, not really. I'll give it some thought though and see if I can come up with one. Any summary I have is very haphazard, since it was written as the ideas came to me, so I don't have anything polished that's worth sharing. It would be a good step, though.

My tastes range from extreme to very extreme. :D

It's hard to pinpoint favorite bands, but here are some that I find come up regularly:

Ahab
Antestor
Bolt Thrower
Crimson Moonlight
Crimson Thorn
Darkspace
Nile

That's a really random collection.

Well, what do you guys think? Should I post my short stories here?

If yes...should I post the funny one first, or the serious (and better) one first?

The really hard stuff. :D I mostly go for more middle-of-the-road metal like Theocracy, Signum Regis, and Tourniquet, but sometimes branch out with bands like Antestor and The Famine.

I think I'll post them shortly. Is there a word limit on posts? One is about 3000 words, and the other is about 3900.

Btw, the serious one is called The Captive (though I've been waffling on this title for a while) and the silly one is called The Fat Man.
